In monopoly was there any significance to the board counters used (ie top
hat, racing car) and have they always been the same for the UK version.
At the cost of being labelled a nerd :-) here they are:
B: Dark Warrior, Dorigen, Flamenco
R: Leonidas II, Marmaduke Jinks, Overcoat
U: Elton, Jerome Fandor, King of Clubs
Y: Knight Error, Play On, Priory Park
I have learnt the fundamental skill of this game - do not play it with my
youngest daughter; she's the most flukey dice roller in Totopoly ever (we
can't actually recall her ever losing a race!).

No significance in the board counters, except in the associated sound
effects and jokes.
I'm no Monopoly expert, but yes, the pieces have changed. The "top hat,
racing car" version is comparatively recent. We have an older version that
has "flat" metal pieces with an integral stand so they can stand up, and
they are racing car, train, motor bike, ship, tank and tractor (with rather
chipped paint on now).
