The rules don't ecplisitely say, but everyone I have played with uses the
second
option above. At the beginning for the next round, before the cards are delt,
your
robot appears (virtual if necessry) on its last archive point.

Your robot goes to the archive location (last flag or wrench touched), but
does not appear until the end of the turn. It appears with 2 points of
damage, and will be virtual or real depending on whether there is another
robot on the same space.

The above is how we've played it, but I was under the impression that you
came back virtual, whether anyone was on the square or not.
One other thing is that the player has to discard an option card of their
choice...

From the System Operator's Section under Withdrawing an Archive Copy,
second paragraph:
"If another robot is already on that square, the player withdrawing the
archive copy starts with a virtual robot. If another player is also
withdrawing an archive copy on the same checkpoint or repair site, both
players start out with virtual robots. Otherwise, players start out with
"real" robots."
You also have the option of re-entering the race powered down to repair the
2 points of damage you take withdrawing the archive copy.

This doesn't occur that often in our group, since you can lose an option to
avoid taking a point of damage. We tend to play "sprints", so dying is much
worse than losing a really good option. (that, and if you're down to 1 option,
you'll lose it upon death anyway, so you might as well have it take a point of
damage and possibly keep you alive long enough to shut down)

I can't find it in the rules, but I have always played that you reappear
on the flag where you were last archived, at the end of the entire current
turn. And if someone else is on that flag, you reappear in virtual mode.

Next turn.
The rules say " Before program cards are dealt, a player may decide to
reenter the race powered down (to repair the 2 damage points)." p.30 Is
this the only decision that has to be made before the cards are dealt? If
the robots can only enter at the start of a turn? Then why would anyone
power down to fix the 2 points of damage??? With a new set of program
cards - and the fact that archive sites are repair sites - wouldn't it
always be preferable to simply program your Robot? Even if you wanted to
repair, you might be able to simply spin in place (you received 7 program
cards) or move off and back onto the repair site to heal damage - the bonus
here is that you have a chance to shoot the competition!
Also, I was wondering if I could check out my hand and then decide facing...
If not, I would have been nice if the rules had specified 'before the cards
are dealt, the player decides whether to reenter powered down and determines
facing' :)
Anyways... the game is quite entertaining. I hope to see many more
expansions.
Thanks
You only heal at the end of a turn, so a one wrench site would only heal
one point instead of two.

The rules say that you choose facing when you withdraw the copy. The
text saying that you choose whether to start powered down before cards
are dealt are two paragraphs down so I would say that all of it is
supposed to be before cards are dealt.
Rich
But of course you MIGHT powerdown just for repairing 2 damage or even
just 1 damage, but that's seldom worth it....

Actually, if you look on page 12-13, you'll see that the program cards are
dealt BEFORE the archive copy is withdrawn. This is the first time I've
noticed this, and every game I've ever played (with many different groups)
has always withdrawn the archive copy, then dealt the cards.
The only difference would be that the player would have the benefit of looking
at their cards before choosing their facing.

Sometimes with 9 program cards you don't receive ANY rotate cards. Entering
powered down is the only way of ensuring that you are fully healed. If the
checkpoint is in a very tricky spot, you might want the benefit of those
extra 2 cards to help you get out of the spot.

As I stated above, it appears the rules allow you to be dealt cards, then
withdraw an archive copy OR enter powered down and withdraw an archive copy.
(Although, I've never seen it played this way, the archive copy is placed
BEFORE cards are dealt.)

The question was about the option to re-enter powered down after
withdrawing an archive copy. Read what you're replying to next time?
