I regularly play a variant called Russian backgammon. The
friend I play with are fairly evenly matched and as a result
we vary the rules from time to time to force us to adjust our
strategies.
Basically all the men start on the wall (where they finished,
setting up is a breeze). Both players move their men in the
same direction. One basic strategy is to form a complete
block with all your men in front of your opponent for the whole
game.
To that end doubles are given even more of an advantage. Not
only do you get the face value of your double but you also get
the reverse value as well, eg if you throw a double 1, you get
to move four men 1 and then you get to move four men 6, (the
order is important because if you can't move your turn stops!),
on top of this you get another throw of the dice. Acey-ducey
is another varian added to the top of this.
The skill comes from making the most of your doubles.. one false
move or a loose man and the biggest lead can turn into an
embarrassing loss. You are never so far behind that you conceed
defeat.
