Any comments on the following situation,
like what's right, what's "officially" right,
what to do about things that are not right,
etc, would be appreciated:

(Very) low-stake money game. O makes a play.
X is a little puzzled, because the resulting
position isn't one he saw as a possibility when
he saw O's roll. X asks O to remind him what the
position was before O made the play. O refuses,
saying that he made a legal play and it's up
to X to keep track of such things.

The polite thing would be to show X what play he made and/or the original
position. However, O is probably within his rights to just leave the
checkers where they are. If it was a tournament match, X can only claim O
made an illegal play if X can really demonstrate that fact.

In chouettes we use a 'legal plays' rule where any illegal play must be
corrected before going on, and any party to the game or a spectator can
point it out. However, in tournament matches and, in my mind, in one-on-one
money play, the 'illegal play' rule makes more sense that you can let an
illegal play stand if it hurt the person that made it, and there is no need
to even point it out, just roll.

no witnesses? then no definitive solution.

rude/inconsiderate people usually prevail (in the short term) in
environments where there is no formal justice system.
clubs rely on people 'playing the game' in every way to function well.

IMO - if someone makes a habit of such behaviour, just stop
playing him/her, arranging for witnesses to any important game.

I have permanently banned 2 people from my club (in 10 years)
due to such attitudes and behaviour - one abusive, one 'sharp practice'.

In article <qod0a11tdhtcmk346...@4ax.com>,

Since he doesn't confidently recall the position himself, X should just
offer the score-keeping pencil to O so he can use it to kill the bug
that crawled up his ass.

Why play someone who takes that attitude? You play bg either

a) For fun -- which this doesn't sound very.

or

b) For profit -- which you have to decide whether it's worth your while
enduring antisocial behavior in terms of you $-winning prospects (vig).

If O is unwilling to show X the original position then he is being
unreasonable and as a TD I would ask him to do so else forfeit the roll
entirely.

Arseholes like him are not welcome at Biba tournaments.
