Call me crazy, but in playing in a lot of tournaments I have rolled this
disasterly roll many times on the opening roll. As the only move that
will only leave one pip open is the 8-6 6-5 move, I don't recommend it.
The move I usually make (no flames please) is the 13-11 6-5. YES, I leave
two pips vulnerable, but the chance of covering my 5 spot therefor working on
a very effective bar is good. I know that the chances of loosing both
places is great, but I feel that it is outweighed by the chance of having
such a strong bar on most probably the next roll.

What do you think about that?

with the 11 I can make a combination with 8 or 6 or 13
and with 24 and 23 I have a chance to take the 18.

I don't play any tournament but I love playing. So this is just
a feeling.

13 -> 10. You see 24->22,24->23 often, but I seem to do
better on the former. (Sets up well for 5-3,6-3,3-3,5-1).

again this depends on your opponent and (if in a match) the current match
score .. in general I like 13-11 6-5, but will not play it that way in a
crawford game or if significantly ahead in a match, opting instead for
13-11 24-23 .. this opening (and 4-1) has very good arguments for the
different variations .. try 13-11 6-5 in some games and see how it feels
to you and your style of play ..

13/11 is the obvious 2. You won't go wrong with 24/23 for the 1,
but 6/5 is a bit more exciting. It is probably good practice to
play both so that your style doesn't get stilted.
