Hi All,

Backgammon does not seem to have as many books written about it as some
other games such as Chess and Bridge.

Are there any books you would like to have writen about the game?

I can think of at least one: How to use the Backgammon Bots!!!

Excellent idea Joe! A comprehensive manual, explaining in detail, all of

Just dreaming, but here's my perfect BG book.

Something about 300 pages, hardbound, with some heft.

Content : Immaterial

Then, the next time I'm moderatly ahead in a match, and my opponent walks out,
I'd like to be able to WHACK them in the back of the head and knock some
sense into them.

Like I said, just dreaming.

It would have the structure of Magriel, but with vastly expanded
sections on doubling, tournament play, backgames and other advanced
techniques. A large section on bots and interpreting rollouts. It would
be free of typos and misplaced diagrams, unlike Robertie. After reading
the book and understanding its contents properly, the reader will have
reached a level of understanding of the game such that he or she will be
able to do 3-ply rollouts in their head.

It would be a book worthy of the game. None of this "Backgammon for
Plasma" stuff. It would be half-bound in morocco and vellum, with the
simple, noble title "The Game of Backgammon" in gold leaf. It would be
printed on good paper with 4-colour diagrams (thousands of these, each
with a rollout summary).

Throughout the book, to lighten the consistantly high tone of the main
text, there would be anecdotes, reminiscences from top players, quotes
from world literature concerning backgammon, specially commissioned
works of art. And the appendixes! Probability; Annotated Matches by the
Greats; a Glossary; Chouette Rules (to settle arguments - this book
would be *authoritative*); Rules of Backgammon Variants; Notes on
psychological considerations. Periodically it would be (accurately)
reported that someone has been killed in order to get the book.

Any publishers out there?

Better still, a CD-ROM backgammon encyclopedia which combines: the full
authoritative text of Magriel's 'Backgammon'; the glamour of Deyong's '
Playboy's Book of Backgammon; the contemporary relevance of Woolsey and
Heinrich's 'New Ideas in Backgammon'; the annotated matches of Robertie's
publications; and a full blown world class AI backgammon program. Dear
Santa.... 8-)

Laury:

Except for the content, the binding, and (especially) the diagrams,
all you've done is described Danny Kleinman's books!

How about:

+-------------------------------------+

REC.GAMES.BACKGAMMON FLAMEWARS!

How the Bots and Servers Cheat,
and It's All Gary Wong's Fault!

+-------------------------------------+

Chapters include:

--> Doubles three times in a row? What more proof
do you need?

--> Probability simplified--if something looks odd,
it probably is.

--> Random number theory without all the messy math.

--> Why all programmers are evil, and how they are
getting rich off your suffering.

My suggestion for the dust jacket.

On the front, Gary standing on the grassy knoll, a suitably sinister,
conspiratorial smirk on his face. A slide rule hanging from his belt,
to evoke 1963.

On the back, Gary sitting at his desk, pocket protector in place,
fingers massaging a pair of skewed dice in the manner of Captain Queeg.
