It's always been my theory that the offshoot of the so-called zigzag that
works is not only the bigger the loss, but the better than team is coming
off a loss. Hence, I can see how low seeds don't perform as well. But the
higher seeds have displayed an ability to bounce back or they wouldn't make
it to the postseason, much less the second rounds.

Can't recall if I used NJ off that Bos comeback in 2002, but Mem is very
similar.

Hope they at least have cable in the asylum, so he can watch as the
Stanley Cup stays in the USA for the 19th straight year.

That has increasingly been the case, there have been some bad lower
seeds over the years (not this year, unusually, although Orlando is
shaky). Certainly gold in the final four, always and forever.

I had it on the border, they pulled away late, could have called it
either way. Gutsy performance by NY and some curious coaching decisions
by Spoelstra, especially Battier on Melo late.

3-1 first round

Second round:

Mem G2 (blowout)

This is a questionable case since a vital player was missing G1, driving
the one-sidedness.

Mem G5 (blowout)

Hou G5 is NOT a play, I have always considered a team that loses by back
to back blowouts heading into elimination as having given up, not off a
bad performance. Not sure what the record is for those offhand, but the
sample size is really small.

LAC G6 (blowout)

Mem G6 is similar to Hou G5, an asterisk game. If you choose to count
those, add a L (Mia Finals G5) to last year and a W (Hou G5) to this year.

Back for another year, and the mismatches in the West first round are
creating lots of opportunities, albeit mostly scary ones.

First round:
Tor G2 (bad home loss)
Dal G2 (blowout)
Hou G2 (blowout)

Tor is a questionable case, but game 1 was so big for them due to past
failures that it qualifies as an especially bad performance. Both West
games have problematic aspects: Dal guard injuries and Hou internal strife.

Note that Mem does not qualify in this series, since they are unable to
field a representative roster there is no way to define what is a
particularly bad performance, it's a meaningless concept for them the
last month or more.

Absolutely brutal beat on Por last night, second one-point loss in three

Filled in the gaps above, turns out this is having by far its worst year in
the time I've posted them. GS is a borderline case tonight, got back
into it
briefly in the 4th on Saturday.

I have a bunch of bounce back angles kicking ass again this year, but one case you do NOT want to zigzag is big road dogs off big losses. This says go with big home faves off blowout win http://killersports.com/nba/query?sdql=playoffs+%3D+1+and+SG+%3E+1+and+op%3Amargin+%3C%3D+-12+and+line%3C%3D-6+and+H+and+series+wins%3E%3Do%3Aseries+wins+and+p%3AA&submit=++S+D+Q+L+%21++

Yeah, this is playoff only. It relies on teams giving effort in every
game, which doesn't apply in season due to the distortions of scheduling.
