I didn't understand the game, I guess.

I've had more spam or unsolicited e-mail crap in the last month than in the
last two years put together.
When they started showing up with a gambling related nature, I finally
figured out why. I'm new to newsgroups and RGP. And that's just about the
time I started getting all this crap.

I'm sure you more experienced newsgroupers already are familiar with this
annoyance. But I just figured it out. Duh!

And today, I got a friggin e-mail which prompted some Internet Explorer
message to appear, informing me that I needed to install Chinese language
characters to read it. Yes! I got spammed in Chinese!

Do I look like I play friggin Pai Gow !?

So, I assume you chose to install the Chinese language module, and
that you read Chinese, and that the message actually concerned Pai
Gow? Or were you just being racist?

There are Asians who rarely or never play Pai Gow (I'm one of them).
Plenty of you round eyes play Pai Gow too.

Spam sucks, and the fact that it was in Chinese is amusing, but the
last sentence was unnecessary.

Dear Lone Locust,

:-)
But I forgot.

I was just being a wise ass.

I strongly disagree with your criticism.

Part of the Politically Correct trend in our society is the claim that the
act of associating any qualities beyond the purely visible with race is a
terrible, evil, racist, thing. This is absurd. Extracting patterns from
data is what life is all about. Have you been into the Pai Gow side of a
northern california poker room? On the rare occasions when I do, I am
usually the only white person at the table. The vast majority of the
people there are asian. Part of the reason for this is that a fair
proportion of the bay area population is asian, but they are still greatly
over-represented at the neg-EV tables. This is simple, observable,
testable, measurable, scientific truth. Whether the reason for this is
genetic, cultural, or simply one of those self-perpetuating institutions
where people learn about it because their friends know, and thus it stays
within one demographic niche, I don't know, but it is still an observable
phenomenon. Making generalizations from this is not racist. If someone
told me they met a cute girl at the PG tables, I would assume, until
further evidence was given, that they were probably asian. To do
otherwise would be irrational.

While there are many asians who don't play Pai Gow, and many white people
who do, that does not disprove the fact that playing Pai Gow and being
asian are highly correlated variables.

The problem with using these observations comes when people forget that
they are generalizations about populations, and should be discarded when
information about an individual is available. Refusing to believe that
you don't play Pai Gow would be an example of stereotyping and racism.
Implying, as the poster did, that people who look asian are often pai gow
players is a true statement about the world in which we live. It was
exaggerated for comedic effect, which is, IMHO, a silly thing to be
offended by, but the thing being exaggerated was true.

I've been getting these spams for months. Some have links that lead
to gaming sites, some are porn, and some I couldn't figure out what they
were for. Anymore I just delete them without even opening them. BTW do
not reply to the unsubscribe messages, it just confirms your e-mail
address and leads to more spam.

Fair enough.

Granted. I generally dislike doing anything simply for the sake
of doing it, and being PC falls in that category for me. The non-PC
complaint is overused and can be pushed to ridiculous extremes.
However that fact can't be used to peremptorily dismiss or invalidate
any claim of offense (a lot of which is in the eye of the beholder).

It's true that, of the pai gow playing population, there is a
preponderance of Asians. However I do not believe that pai gow
players make up a significant portion of the Asian population.
P(PG|Asian) is still small even if it's larger than P(PG|~Asian)
(and even though P(Asian|PG) is large). Not that I have any facts
that I can point to to back that up, but then I doubt there's any
hard data either way.

What Paul said can, I think, be interpreted two ways. One is "If
I played Pai Gow I would be Chinese." Another is "If I were Chinese
I would play Pai Gow." One is offensive, one isn't.

Actually, the second one is still mildy offensive even given that
most PG players are Asian, because not all Asians are Chinese.

Hey, isn't Pai Gow chinese? Isn't it austensibly a game of chinese origin? And
wasn't the missive in question in chinese? It doesn't take a racist to make the
association.

OK. Let me try to put my foot in my mouth again. First of all, I eat alot
of spagetti and eggplant. The other day, I got spammed in Italian. What
the heck, do I look like I bowl on the friggin lawn?

Now an Asian guy could've made the comment above and I wouldn't mind at all.
However, if it was an Irish guy I'd be pissed. :-) :-)

This time I put TWO smiley-face thingys.

People are people.
One of the best things about my country, USA, is that it IS a melting pot.
I like my country, I like people, and I like freedom.

Whoops! I pressed the SEND button. Too late now.

What Patri is trying to say is that Asian people are really stupid.

And I like humor. I'm NEVER offended by a humorous remark toward
Albanians (and I've really had lots of them) if it is not malicious.
However, sometimes people don't know where to draw a line of
good taste.

I feel this line was not crossed in this thread.

Did you ever hear the one about the Albanian, the Pollack, and Doug Grant?

Could you please explain to me why his referance to Pai Gow is racist
but your referance to "you round eyes" is not?

And how necessary was your "round eye" comment?

OK, so there's three travelling salesmen, a Hindu, a Jew, and Doug Grant
(tm). They are waaaay out in the country and it's getting late and they're
really getting tired, so they stop at a farmhouse to ask if they can spend
the night.

The farmer is a kind man and says "I always give shelter to wayfarers in
need, but I only have 2 beds. Would one of you be willing to sleep in the
barn?"

The Hindu volunteers to sleep in the barn, and the others all go up to bed.

Five minutes later, there is a knock on the door. It is the Hindu.

He says, "There is a cow in the barn, and I regard cows as sacred. I am not
comfortable sleeping in the barn. Would one of you switch with me?"

The Jew volunteers to switch with the Hindu, and sleep in the barn, and the
others all go up to bed.

Five minutes later, there is a knock on the door. It is the Jew.

He says, "There is a pig in the barn, and I regard pigs as unclean. I am
not comfortable sleeping in the barn. Would one of you switch with me?"

Incidentally, the above IS intended as a joke. Ordinarily I wouldn't
feel obliged to explain myself except that there seems to be an
influx of people who are determined to go through all sorts of
contortions to misunderstand me.

If you haven't read DG's ramblings, you won't get the joke. (Even if
