Archie Karas in 1992

Before going on his million dollar rush at the crap tables at
Binion’s, Archie Karas was broke. He borrowed $500 from Bill
Nordlinger to play in the pan game at the Commerce. Bill also game
him 10 cards he could use from the casino to cheat. Archie took the
cards and the money and won $2,000. He never paid Bill back- he
stiffed him.

Louis Olejack, (alias Lou Banyon) who was Bobby Baldwin’s drug dealer,
was also a friend of Karas. Bobby did a lot of coke (cocaine) back
then. When he played cards he’d be running to the bathroom between
hands to do coke. Archie Karas never did drugs, he was a health
nut.

[1997- A convicted Las Vegas card cheat who fled rather than appear in
court on new charges became the 29th person whose name was inscribed
in the Black Book of persons excluded from casinos. Louis John
Olejack, 46, unanimously was banned by the Nevada Gaming Commission
from entering Nevada casinos. He did not appear at the hearing to
contest his inclusion on the notorious list. Deputy Attorney General
Michael Wilson said the state has not been able to locate Olejack, who
is at large after failing to show up at a Reno court hearing last fall
on a slot cheating charge. He was convicted of cheating at blackjack
in April 1995 at Harrah's Las Vegas by bending the cards. In that
case, the state dropped charges that he also had cheated at Whiskey
Pete's. He was arrested in February 1996 at the Club Cal-Neva in Reno
for use and possession of a slot cheating device. After he failed to
show up for a hearing, a warrant for his arrest was issued. Olejack
also was convicted in 1981 for transporting a stolen oil painting
valued at $75,000 from Pennsylvania to Scottsdale, Ariz., and was
convicted in 1969 in Allentown, Pa., of marijuana possession. He
received probation for all of his convictions. While Olejack does not
have the notorious reputation of past Black Book members, such as the
late mob boss Tony Spilotro, Gaming Commission Chairman Bill Curran
said he should be included because of his repeated cheating efforts.
"My thought is he is somebody currently very active in operating in
the casinos," Curran said. "It is important to act now, rather than
later."]

So Archie went to Vegas where he had his buddy, Lou Banyon set up a
pool game with a coked up Bobby Baldwin. Lou and Archie agreed to
split the money they won from Bobby who was all drugged up on cocaine
and wouldn’t be playing his best game.

I was curious about Karas Russ. If the high stakes poker games were
all rigged then why was Karas able to win so much from Doyle and
Ungar? Did they decide to play it str8 that day or not notice they
were getting cheated?

He lost his ass to those guys. Only problem was he won a couple of
times when his protoge had him make the ante so big the game was like
showdown, even though Chip and Doyle had marked cards in. Plus, he was
being paid thousands per hour to play. Read your phony books )comic)
