Last night I was in a mini sit and go style home game. I look down at my
hand and see AK and raise, get one caller. The board hits with two aces and
a rag. I check the other player is aggressive and bets, i call. On the turn
another rag hits and he makes a big bet. I act a little concerned, go back
to check my hole cards and what do i find? King-four!!! I misread my hand.
Good thing I looked back. I obviously folded and felt pretty stupid. But I
think with the four covered slightly by the King it does look like an Ace.
Has anyone else had something similar where it cost them a lot of money?

I was playing O8 at the Trop once and somehow thought I had cards that I
didn't. I ended up putting a bunch of bets in and then flipping over what
I though was going to scoop the pot and in fact was much worse and ended
up losing both high and low. Not good times.

yeah, this is actually quite easy to do; make sure the index is clearly
completely uncovered when you check your hole cards.

This happened to me once too. I was in a home game sit&go with like 7
players. I looked at my hole cards and saw A7 off. The flop came 77? I
made a big bet and got 1 caller. Turn came rag. I moved all in. After
thinking about it for a while my opponent turned up J7 and mucked it to
my bigger kicker. I looked at my hand before I threw it into the muck
and realized I had A4 off not A7, LOL. Well this one worked out for me.
Little did I know a call was the end of my tourney! Phew!

That's why a 4 is sometimes called a "drunken ace" or "one-legged ace".

Some deck designs are better than others in this respect.

If you haven't had this happen at least once, you don't play much poker.

I guess I'm the only exception, since I've played lots of poker (by almost
anyone's definition), and have never lost money because I misread a 4 for an
Ace. Of course I check my hands usually more than once anyway.

I have misread boards before though.

Mike

When we started playing in our home game, we used Spiderman: the Movie
Cards, and often mistook the Aces for Fours. Were they using
spiderman cards, or did you smoke your breakfast?

I noticed the difficulty of recognizing the A from the 4 many years
ago playing BlackJack In Las Vegas. The dealers all did a quick peek
when they had a 10 or a picture card face up to see if the had an Ace
which would give them BlackJack. Well I noticed every time they had to
take a second more careful look they ALWAYS had a 4. This gave me a
little edge every once in a while knowing the dealer had 14 even
though he had a 10 or picture card face up.

Yes, the BJ Dealer "Tell" 4 in the hole was a huge
money maker for me. Too bad those days are long gone.

It baffles me why 4 color decks aren't more popular.
