cheat,so is Mike Caro, one of his friends and co authors of super system,THE
book on big poker.Hmmm,he dosent mention cheating in there.I guess he cheated
his way into 2 wsop championships and i dont know how many other events at

I don't know whether Brunson is a cheat or not. I havn't heard the stories
about him that I've heard about Johnny Moss and some others.

But, the fact that he is a good poker player doesn't mean he's not a cheat.
I don't know where y'all got a silly idea like that. Most cheats are bad
poker players, that doesn't mean they all are.

I've never heard anything that suggests to me that Brunson is a cheat. But,
you guys sure aren't making the aruguements in his favor that you think you
are.

The fact that he didn't mention cheating in his chapter on no-limit sure
isn't an arguement that he's not a cheat. Lot's of cheating goes on in
private nolimit games, his lack of mention of it might make some wonder why.

For the kneejerk among you who can't stand anything that even hints of being
critical of some imagined icon, read this post twice before you jump on my
about it.

Hi -- to all ; I think Poker Players as a group or the most honorable of any
other group of people on the earth. I have been asked many times--Johnny who is
the best player you have ever played with?--My answer is always the same -----
Doyle (Tex Dolly)Brunson--and I think his son Todd is the best young player--I
have played with both and I don't play with cheaters and I would not have
recommended that Doyle Brunson be inducted into the Seniors Poker Players Hall
Of Fame if he were not an honorable player .Lets all clean up poker and stop
the attacks on each other leave that up to Gore and Bush--They will do enough
of that--We should not come down to their level. Stay Lucky O.K.Johnny

These are just words. Without proof they are useless. We could all type
what ever we want in the privacy of our own homes and leave these words on
any of a million + bulletin boards. This does not mean that this individual
isn't telling the truth, but he or she must provide more evidence then this.
In today's world it is too easy to say anything on the internet, and it must
be taken with a grain of salt. Take the stock market boards for example.

Considering the era that Mr. Brunson was brought up in, and especially
considering his chosen profession, it wouldn't necessarily be such a shock.
His very own book, ("Super System") of which I have, mentions his early days
of playing in very dangerous neighborhoods; in backrooms run by mobsters.
This can be found on page 6, the second paragraph. This will mention only
one area, but at the time, where else was he and the other players going to
find games throughout their travels?

I am NOT lambasting Mr. Brunson. I have never met the man, though it would
be great to get to know him. I would love to hear his stories of the old
days, regardless of how good or bad they may seem. As a matter of fact that
may be a good idea for him to base another book on.

Back to the book...

Doyle takes the time to talk about his wife, the serious life threatening
ailment he faced as well as the rest of his family. It is also known that
his wife is a devoted Christian. This does not guarantee that he was on the
up and up all those years, but could he have loved this women, and his
daughter, the way he has for so many years keeping such dark secrets hidden
from them?

As easy as one can say things about the time and era he played in (early
days that is) it is also known how men were more devoted to the women they
loved. I can go on and on with this but lets face it, without evidence
these are nothing but words and that is the point.

JDollar10, whomever this person is, has absolutely no evidence. Mr.
Brunson appears to be a very nice person who I would like to meet someday.
JDollar10 was probably beaten by Doyle many times and blames Doyle for his
or her losses, rather then admit that they are just a poor poker player.

In the era of Titanic Thompson, Jimmy the Greek, etc. hustling the suckers
was a way of life. Did they play by the rules? What rules? Only one rule.
Never give a sucker an even break. Did they play in less than straight up
games? Yes. Did they beat the less than honest at their own game? Sure they
did. It wasn't about integrity in gambling, it was about getting the money.
Was Doyle Brunson around when this was going on. Sure he was. So what?

Should one accused of being a cheat have to defend the accusations
without proof? You say the Brunson supporter's arguments are not
helping exhonerate Brunson. You are probably right.

But unsupported allegations of cheating do not need to be defended in
the first place. Without proof, they are meaningless. And made
anonymously, they are nothing but scandalous. While uninformed posters
may be quick to defend a legend without substance in their defense, the
equal lack of substance in the attack is enough to make their defense
perfect. They carry the day.

I don't have a comment one way or the other about DB's modus operandi. But
I do know that the above comment just begs the question. I'll spell it out:

TW: Does Doyle cheat?
BA: No.
TW: How do you know?
BA: He doesn't have to.
TW: How do you know that?
BA: Because he is a successful player.
TW: How do you know his success doesn't come from cheating?

Isn't JDollar the guy who was spamming on and on about TJ and others
after WSOP? Just ignore the loser.

A lot of us wish you would post more on 2+2. We promise to avoid
knee-jerk responses whenever possible; however, sometimes we may throw
in a jerky or dumb response just to make you feel at home.

Tom, I agree with Rick Nebiolo, and I think you should post more on 2+2
where real poker hands and situations are intelligently discussed. The
majority of postings here on rgp are trivial having nothing to do with
poker, feeble attempts at humor and sarcasms, and personal attacks on
other posters.

You are correct in that there's a lot here not related to playing the game
itself. But it is a good place to find out what's going on in the poker
world. On any "open" forum, you're going to have all of the things you
mentioned.

But I hope you don't think 2+2 is perfect. An example, I made a post where
my views were different from the majority. This was on the tournament
forum. DS only has one post in that active forum. All he said was "JohnnyD
is wrong". I asked him to clarify, he did not. I mentioned it in another
post wondering why he did not respond and got no answer. In a personal
email to a friend, who I know is a big DS and MM supporter, I asked him why
he thought DS did not respond. I really don't care if he responds, what he
thinks matters little in my life, I just don't agree when some paint 2+2 as
a better forum.

I don't check out our tournament forum very often. I must have felt your error
was obvious and that others would tell you why. I have no recollection of it.
If you repost it here, I'll answer it.

Hmm, a quick search of jdollar and rgp at deja reveals him saying
this about tj:

Do you people really think T.J. even cares what is said about him on
here.Even if you dont find the posring funny the man made it as a

that makes this so stupid ....All of you talking about law suits and

I must admit I once cheated in a poker game. I slipped a few extra 10's,
2's and 4's into my stud hand to beat Pablo out of a huge pot with seven
A's. I really do feel terrible about this now. But , I seem to remember
that stack of cookies being especially good. untill he punched me.

My introduction to serious cheating was when I was 14. I've still got a
small scar across my chest to remind me.

I had a summer job at Eagle Rock Resort Ranch in Wimberley, Texas. I stayed
in a line shack with some college student wranglers and a couple of cowboys.
Back in those days (early 60's), the hispanic wranglers and cowboys had
seperate quarters. I went to the mexican cowboy's shack for a dice game
with the two anglo cowboy's. During the game I noticed that one of the die
magically turned from a five to a four. I said something about it. The two
cowboys got me out of there with only a small cut across my chest. I am
forever indebted to those two guys.

I was able to intercept an e-mail exchange between Doyle Brunson and a
very close friend of his whom I rather don't name.(He is in the gaming
industry, recently relocated to Tunica)
Here is part of D.B.'s reply (partially edited):
"I don't have to estimate it,you know that I keep an accurate record of
everything. Considering all the sessions I have ever played I cheated
in 61% of them. I don't have to tell you that the method obviously
changed over time, nowadays it is mostly partnership,my legendary
manual skills are almost gone,I don't even practice any more.Since I
had that..."
Sorry for posting this Mr Brunson, but I think if we really want to
clear up poker sometimes we have to take some unpopular steps as well.
I did it only for Poker.

On the encouragement of you two, I have been looking for a thread that
interests me enough to contribute to 2+2. It took me quite some time before
such a thread appeared (the above quote from Jim Brier was 5 days ago)...
Poker:General Theory:"Poker Math and EV Hands". I wrote (as usual) a
long-winded, boring treatise on exploitive play vs. game theory, showing the
role of calculating ev when playing either "people poker" or playing
optimally (game theoretically). I spent at least 2-3 hours on it, and was
quite happy with it. Then I clicked the "preview" button and started to
read it. I found a place to make an adjustment, so I clicked "back". It
was gone! Desperate, I clicked "forward", and got a "duplicate submisson"
message that told me to click "back" (big help). I was able to find no way
to rescue what I wrote. Three hours of work, down the tubes (okay, so
cutting and pasting the work is a safer method, but I'm still pissed...
stupid, but pissed).

Sorry guys, but I think it will be quite awhile before I post anything
substantive over there because I hate the damn interface (okay, I'm tilted
that I didn't use the interface in the best way, but I currently don't care
about this distinction), I see very few threads that interest me, and I
lurked (and later posted to) rg and rgp before most poker players even knew
that such a thing existed.

Maybe we should have a behind-closed-doors meeting to agree to consolidate
both these forums. I'll let others elaborate on whether or not this
violates antitrust statutes.

Yes, this happens all the time. If the text of your article was
still on the preview screen, you could have dragged your mouse to
copy all the text, and then pasted it back in the entry screen.
You can likely still retrieve your article. If you're on Unix,
use something like grep "Poker Math and EV Hands" ~/.netscape/.cache/*
This is how I retrieve my articles that Mason Malmuth censors.
