The 2 most important tools for getting it plumb and square were a
water level and a string.

Nice. But was it worth the 8 years of environmental study and EPA red

LOL. I've got a friend in Oregon that has to go through all kinds of
permits and inspections and red tape.

Thankfully, I live in Texas. No permits, no inspections, no red tape.

You should put a camera on a fixed point (like on that tree for instance)
and take daily photos of the progress, and do a time-lapsed animation at
the end of construction. Would probably be good for ~25,000 YouTube views
at least.

I was going to do something similar for the Galena Creek Bridge, but it
was too much of a PITA to get down there and take pictures. Plus since I
wasn't taking the picture from the same exact spot each time, the quality
was turning out to be really shitty.

Asshole, the regs, you shithead, were from the Texas building depart, listed
as required building codes throughout the entire state

I realize you're a fucking idiot, but that's not a google page, and that
means there ARE regulations, even if your local county building inspector
doesn't come out and enforce them

So if it falls on someone and kills them, its your ass, and your insurance
company will deny coverage if they can show you weren't in compliance, for
instance

Building codes are there to protect the consumer from shady contractors.
Usually for major components like foundation, plumbing, electrical, and
framing. If you live in the county where your structure doesn't endanger
others and don't want someone else to check the work you don't have to
have it. The codes may be state codes, but building permits (which
trigger inspections) aren't required in the county in most states.

The reason you don't know this is because limp wrist-ed, hand wringers
like yourself don't actually do anything themselves.

Nice job. I wish I had learned to weld.. I built a 24 x 24 once. If I
had a 8 year old to bring me stuff it would have been finished twice as

They're there to protect consumers from builders.
This includes future consumers of self-builders. IOW, to protect anyone Alim

A) That's false
B) The permits aren't always required, but if the work isn't to code, it can
invalidate a sale, make you ineligible for insurance collection, etc

I had my nephew help me on the day we stood all the posts up. Cant
hold a post straight and weld it too. Since then it's been all by
myself. Getting the very top purlins in is not fun. I've one done
one side of the ridge, . I did it in 10 foot setions because I cant
get a 20 footer up there all by myself

.. I think I will use a rope on the next ones, I can get a 20 footer
up to the low part, then pull it up to the peak. I have to use a
couple of C clamps to lean it against so it doesnt slide back down.
and to make sure it sits at the correct angle to the truss.

I'm a little sore at the end of each day, but not too bad.

We had the same problem in Bishop, California. Second biggest county in the US and only 12,000 people (includes Death Valley). Hunting, fishing and skiing area. When you needed something, you went to the Sears Catalog store, looked through the catalog; ordered it; two days later it came to the store and you picked it up if you liked it. The LA folks moved in. Now there's a MacDonalds, and I believe they have a Wal-mart.

If Texas had a few trees you could have built with wood.

Why would the insurance company care prior to you filing a claim?

They can take your money all day long. If it collapses and it wasn't to code

Cool. I think the reason I prefer wood is that I seem to start fires when I welded or cut; including setting myself on fire. (They don't like fires in Oregon; you burn down the trees you were supposed to use).

I was building a pellet feed business, welding an auger to a tower, when I laid my drill on the fork lift (after connecting the extension cord by stuffing pieces of wire in the socket). To climb up I grabbed the metal tower with one hand and the fork lift with the other. I completed the circuit to ground. That was the first time I experienced the "I'm being electrocuted and I can't let go," trick. Fucking near killed me.

So wood it is. I don't electrocute myself or set myself on fire. And I have very few stitches and leak less blood from wood saws. (Thank god for Obamacare, you pay by the stitch).

OUCH!! I bet that was scary. I've been bit a few times by 110,
Worst shock i ever got was 115 volts DC. I had my left arm against a
grid of expanded metal and my right hand slipped as I was taking a
voltage reading. Not a good feeling at all.

A metal building is cheaper and goes up faster. My wife was very
picky about colors on the house exterior, i repainted the from 3 times
before she settled on colors, luckily it just happens to match
standard metal building colors almost exactly. I could have just told
her to go down to the local Metal Mart and pick your colors. LOL

If you don't shed at least a little blood on every project, you aren't

Here's a trick you probably already know, but I used successfully!

I had to run some 440v power in for one of my motors. The power company ran the 3-phases to a power pole I put in (wood, heh). When they dropped to my pole they needed to know the size transformers to put up. I had taken a plate off a 60hp motor and put it in place of the 100hp plate. The power company guys put up a smaller set of transformers. I paid a lower stand-by rate and didn't give a shit if I over-heated their transformers.

I nearly always work 110v hot. That way I'm forced to be careful and I know how to keep from getting hurt. Not smart, but saves time running back and forth to the box. Just keep your two hands touching. That way the short goes through your hands and not up your arms and through your (liberal bleeding) heart. If the weather is dry the short won't pass much current.

Two weeks ago I worked on my refrigerator hot. It's surprising how you can't see the blades of the motor when it's running. Four stitches.

Holy shit! You ARE in the sticks. Is it one wire system with ground return? Let me guess, you're in West Texas?

It's 3 wire 220. Two 110's, ground and neutral bonded together. No,
not West texas. i'm about an hour north of DFW. When i say a long
ways from 3 phase, I mean about a mile. 220 service is free to the
house. 3 phase you gotta pay for the transmission lines.

That is seriously cool! Thanks for the photos. Please show us a photo of

I will, I'm going to put a rock veneer on the front and landscape
around it. Over the past couple of years I've aquired things i need a
place to keep and I've outgrown the little building that was here when
we buiilt. I want to get my RV under cover and get everything in
order and looking nice again. I'm a stickler for my yard and
landscaping, and when this is done there will be a big trip to the
landfill.

And my oldest son took advantage of me being out of the country. He
bought a new dually truck and put a new welding bed on it, and of
course, where did he put the dually bed he had to take off? Oh, dad
isn't home, I'll leave it there. I told him either sell it and get
rid of it, or I'll haul to the scrap yard.

A couple of more pics posted today at flicker.

I put up a 10x12 roll up door, by myself today. NOT easy. Also got
the walk in door installed.

I have found this all very interesting, Alim. It looks like you're doing a
good job there. My father built most of the first house I lived in as a
child and I was really lucky where I grew up (on a farm) until about the
age of 7 or 8 compared to most kids. Kids that grow up in the city have no
idea what they're missing.

Another thing that I've found very interesting is that you do look like
Jethro just as you told us your wife said.
