Let's Go!
After some quick introductions and announcements from Commissioner Jeffrey
Pollack and Tournament Director Jack Effel, we're all set for the kickoff
of Day 1a. The Main Event bracelet is out on the podium for all to see,
and with their goal fixed firmly in sight, the players look ready to go.
Sasquatch is ready to go too, and the Jack Link's mascot had the honor of
uttering the most famous words in poker. With a grunt came the, "Shuffle
up and deal," and the Main Event is underway! We're playing four levels
today. Good luck, players!

-------------------------------------------------------

On the structure sheet it says they play 5 level each day until day 7 when
they play until 27 remain. Do we know about this change?

A Few Faces Everyone's favorite foil Brad Garrett is with us here in the
Blue section, though there's no sign of his funnyman counterpart Ray
Romano just yet. On the pro side of things, we have Jennifer Tilly,
Ludovic Lacay, George Danzer, Eric Koskas, Ciaran O'Leary, Antony
Lellouche, and Thayer Rasmussen all within eyeshot. Over on the main
featured table, Eli Elezra is basking under the warm glow of the TV
lights. We hear that Lex Velduis is slated to join that table, but there
is still a seat empty over there. And on the other side of the Jack Link's
Lounge, we find double bracelet winner Greg "FBT" Mueller trying to work
his three-peat magic against a table full of unknowns at the secondary
featured.

Fri, 03 Jul 2009 12:57:40 John Phan Eliminated
Wow. Surely this was not how John Phan was expecting his Main Event would
take shape. Phan bet 1,500 on the turn of a board after his opponent
checked. That opponent then check-raised to 4,000, with Phan making the
call. The river came and brought a bet of 5,100 from Phan's opponent.
"I'm supposed to raise here," said Phan. But instead he just called with
, a set of queens. His opponent showed for the turned straight and the
winning hand. That loss knocked Phan down to 4,000 chips. A few hands
later he opened for 300 preflop and was called by a late-position player
and the small blind. The small blind checked the flop, inducing a bet
of 700 from Phan. That bet folded the late-position player, but not the
small blind. The small blind check-raised to 5,000, sending Phan deep into
the tank. "This is how my World Series is gonna end?" Phan asked no one in
particular. "35 minutes in? You know what I have." Phan called all in and
showed . His opponent had top pair, . The turn was the , raising the
specter of a board straight. The river was worse than that for Phan -- it
was the , making two pair for Phan's opponent and ending Phan's Main Event
in the first hour of play. He is out.

4 levels, lol. The year I played, we played 7 levels. I think it was
400/800 when we got back on day 2.

HAHAHAHAHAHA... Lame fucking WSOP tourney officials. No more diaper prop
bets either?

You might remember that last year, Laak played all of Day 1 in a full-on
prosthetic mask, concealing his identity and appearing to the world to be
a much older man. Laak was not able to pull off a similar stunt this year.
The 2009 edition of the WSOP Tournament Rules includes a new Rule 44, aka
the "Phil Laak Rule". It states in relevant part:

Players may not cover or conceal their facial identity. Tournament
officials must be able to distinguish the identity of each player at all
times and may instruct players to remove any material that inhibits their
identification or is a distraction to other players or tournament
officials.

When I played we also only started with 10k chips, and they shortened the
levels to 100 minutes on day one (I think with 15 minute breaks, but it
may have been twenty).

You don't recognize the name Eli Elezra? How old are you, exactly? Were
you there when Wild Bill got shot?

I honestly have no idea who he is. If he's that well known then I'm sure I

I assume you're kidding but if you really don't know who Eli Elezra is, you
must not watch much televised poker. He is a wealthy Las Vegas business
owner and a regular on the "High Stakes Poker" and "Poker After Dark" TV
shows. He's a good player and definitely not afraid to push in his money.

Ahh, televised poker. I've watched all of about 40 minutes, with the
longest stint about 15 minutes. What compels people to watch these things
eludes me. I have no patience in watching childish, boring behavior,
especially when the purpose is the promotion of something where skill is a
relatively unimportant factor. I have more interest in watching the nightly
Lotto balls pop up, even though I don't buy tickets there either.

But at least now I know why I didn't recognize the name.

share exactly how you are railing against "no-name" players who are both
regulars on TV and also in the biggest cash game in the world, simply
because you do not recognize them?

When did Tilly become a pro? Have we shifted into some strange alternate
reality or are they not using the word "professional" in the same way I
would... or both.

I didn't. I checked last night and it showed level 5 on the WSOP site's
structure sheet, the 200-400, on Day 1. I got in late so they may have
announced it at the start that we were now going to dinner at 4:30
(sheesh, wish I'd known about that before eating my granola bars), and
ending after level 4. And then with 10 minutes to go they randomly
picked x hands to play, where x turned out to be 3, and then the day
ended. I assume that was a new thing this year. Too bad because I
liked my table and was chip leader there, I would have liked another level.

"Railing against"? All I said was I didn't know who he was. How is that

facts of the situation. Why would I have any knowledge of who is "no-name"

Unless I'm using Google Groups Advanced Search incorrectly, and that may
very well be the case, NO ONE in RGP has EVER brought up the name Eli
Elezra, until Irish Mike did in a thread in May of this year (and I remember
reading that post; it was just a passing comment and Elezra wasn't even the
point of the post or thread, and I admit I didn't look up Eli Elezra at that
time (like I said, I'm not enamored enough with poker celebrity to gobble up

But if it makes any difference, I now have heard the name and have
associated it with the TV poker and the big game, for whatever importance
that has in my life.

Your trolling attempt is noted, but I already stated that I don't watch TV
Poker. I used to pick up the Poker magazines when I was at the casinos, but
I haven't even looked at one of those in years, and although Eli Elezra is a
legend in your mind, I'm afraid that even in RGP he hasn't been canonized
yet. In RGP his biggest mentions are an Irish Mike thread, in May of this
year, where Mike mentioned Elezra was probably alluding to Gold when he made
some comment in an interview, and this blown out of proportion troll that
has gotten Elezra's name some real exposure.

The "Wow. Just wow." comment is either a troll attempt, or you really are
an absolute moron to think that everyone that posts on RGP would know a name
that has only been indirectly mentioned in one previous post. I can
understand that you might be caught up in the poker celebrity of the TV
shows, but step back and realize that the rest of the world isn't caught up
in the fantasy that is TV poker.

I'll accept for the moment it is just a troll attempt, because it's a wee
bit difficult to believe that you're really that stupid, though the jury is
still out on that point.

I have no issue with people posting about the WSOP. I merely stated that I
didn't know who the people were that were mentioned in the OP. You're the
one with the "issue".

I would too. You automatically get everyone over the age of 60 and I get

I'll reply to your other post here as well. I'm sorry you think that Eli
Elezra is a name that has never been mentioned on RGP and is some sort of
TV hero. He's not, at least not my hero. I don't get how you make the
leap from me being amazed that you don't know who he is to you thinking

Seriously though, have you ever heard of Doyle Brunson?

Well, then I'm using it incorrectly. Obviously, if I did read any of those
threads, I wasn't impressed with who he was. But that still doesn't mean
that anything about Eli Elezra has any impact on my life that would make me
want to remember who his is and what he does. Is that so difficult to

I didn't answer it the first time because it was a troll attempt. But just
to get you off the subject, yes, I've even posted in threads in RGP where
Doyle Brunson posted when he was still posting on RGP. So you can drop the
ignorant question.

You seem to think that I care what a bunch of people on an internet group
think about me. You would be incorrect.

Funny you should use the word ignorant in this thread since that's all
you've displayed. If you don't the name of someone who has played with
Doyle every day for what, 20 years or so, it's possible you don't know who
Doyle is which is why I asked the question.

Why would I know who Doyle Brunson is playing against? Why would I care who
he is playing against? Doyle Brunson is nothing more than a blip on the

Ok I'm not sure if you realize where you are, but this is a poker
newsgroup. In a poker newsgroup people sometimes talk about poker. Do
you know who Sarah Palin is? She's a mere blip on anyone's radar and
should have no importance on anyone's life, yet everyone knows who she is.

The fact is, we're talking about poker players in a poker newsgroup. You
were the one who showed up in this thread with your pompous yet ignorant
comments proving you don't know a fucking thing about anything you talk
about. I merely jumped on that and pointed out how funny it is to watch
an idiot flounder in their own stupidity. You don't even know how to use
google for fuck's sake. I realize that these computer things are new to
you, but if you can't figure out how to use the most basic search engine

The fact is Sarah Palin is, to some degree, on just about everyone's radar.
Whether you believe it's good or bad, she's covered in just about all the
different media and for almost everything she says or does. The fact that
she had the potential to be the first in secession for the Presidency of the
United States would make knowing something about her at least more important
than a blip on someone's radar. Eli Elezra has media coverage at some
minute percentage level of Palin's and is barely relevant to even people
that play poker. If you can't see the difference between someone knowing
who Sarah Palin is and who Eli Elezra is then I'm sorry I can't possibly
help you any further.

> The fact is, we're talking about poker players in a poker newsgroup.

Just because we're poker players on a poker newsgroup does not mean we have
to know everyone that plays poker. I haven't bought any packets of the
Poker trading cards yet, but if they are out, my guess is you would have
subscribed to the whole series and studied their stats.

Of course I know how to use Google, you silly twit. I've been programming
computers since before you were born. I used a tool put out by Google that
is supposed to give me threads based on keywords. The Google Groups
Advanced search has quite a few options to narrow down the search.
Obviously, I narrowed the search filter in one of the options too far. If
it were that important to me I would have looked at it a second time, but it
didn't.

I had you up until this last sentence. Just because you don't know
someone doesn't speak for the rest of the poker world. If you can find me

Otherwise I'm going to keep assuming that you just don't know much about

I wasn't trying to single you out Chris. My post started out pointing out
that, out of so many names mentioned, I had only heard of those three
people. I went on to point out that something I see as pretty much a crap
shoot, is being touted like it's the start of the U.S. Open golf or Tennis
tournaments. And then I got a bit editorial expressing that I think it's
silly for people to fawn over celebrities. The "get a life" wasn't directed
at you, but at anyone that gets caught up in the hype that these celebrities
exploit. It's especially ridiculous in the poker world, because I believe
fame and fortune and obscurity and poverty are for the most part based on
the randomness of the cards rather than much on skill.

Why? Because he didn't know who Eli Elezra was? Newsflash bucko, there are
billions of people in world who have no idea who he is. The man said he

Why in the hell would I care if there aren't 10 other people on RGP that
doesn't know who Eli Elezra is? Why would I care if anyone on RGP knows or
doesn't know him? What would you concede if you did find 10 other people

doing makes any difference to me in the slightest.

Hell, if that's what you want me to admit, Jesus, just ask. I know very
little about the poker world as it is today. I look on that as a positive
not a negative. To read the fan websites and watch the TV shows so that you
can be a poker groupie is about as pathetic as life could be. I can't
imagine wasting my life doing that.

I can understand that the "Get a life." sentence appears to be directed at
you, and I apologize that I didn't make it more clear. The sentence before
it points out that I find it silly for people getting all ga-ga over any
celebrity, and I followed up with the "Get a life." to those people. Only
you know if you are one of them. If you are then I am saying "Get a life"
to you too, if you are not, then it doesn't apply to you. Pretty simple.

First, I don't think I said that the WSOP ME is a waste of time. If someone
has the money and a better than average skill set they have a chance to make
a good deal of money. But I also believe that it's a crap shoot. The
randomness of the cards reduce skill level to a minor asset. An asset for
sure, but in my opinion not nearly as important as most people think.
That's why when the size of the fields in the main event shot up, those
people that everyone thought would tear through the "dead money" and
accumulate tons of chips and the matchups that most people expected to fill
the final table didn't materialize.

Second, where did I start a thread about it?

I don't drink. I drank with Fellmo and Tanya on Super Bowl Eve in 2006
just for the moment. I was toast. Last time I touched the stuff. Drug
free, too. I can pass an atomic drug test.

Are you drink'in? I set the 5800, man.

Dude, this is RGP. The bar for obtuseness has been set so high and

mention.

You didn't rail against those poker players, you railed against we who
watch them: "I am amazed at how star struck people are. A crap shoot

and people are wetting their pants in excitement, trying to get a
glimpse of famous people. Get a life."

You may not realize this but that is an insult to us and so it is not
surprising that people react negatively (on the off chance that you
care about that).

If you don't know the names being mentioned here such as Eli Elezra
then this thread and likely this newsgroup is not for you. That's not
a problem, if you enjoy tiddly-winks or some other activity more than
watching poker pros play on TV then it's just different strokes for
different folks but why you choose to comment in this thread and
further why you choose to insult us (those of us who enjoy TV poker)
with your attitude is beyond my understanding and elicits a response
even from me (it's a rare post I respond to).

Ok Morphy, I'll take your start and carry it to it's conclusion. I remarked
that a post contained quite a few names that, other than the three I listed,
I had no idea who they were. I didn't know what profession those that I
hadn't heard of were in, but I did understand that they were "celebrities"
of some sort. I then pointed out that I think it is amazing that people are
awed so much by those celebrities. I also implied and added my little
editorial comment about poker tournaments being crap shoots, and that people
make celebrities of people that are basically lucky. And then I got a
little harsh and added "Get a life".

Now, no where in that did I specify anyone's name. I do admit that since
this post was following Chris's post, he had the right to believe that it
was pointed at him, which wasn't the case at all. I apologize to him for
not specifying that clearer.

Seeing people flocking around celebrities and fawning over celebrities is
just a pet peeve of mine.

Next, you posted your amazement that I didn't know Eli Elezra.

> You don't recognize the name Eli Elezra? How old are you, exactly? Were
> you there when Wild Bill got shot?

I then responded that, no I didn't know who he was and that I'm not that
interested in looking it up either.

> I honestly have no idea who he is. If he's that well known then I'm sure
> I
> could Google it and find out, but NOW I'm going to ignore learning about
> him
> until I accidentally run across it.

Irish Mike explained who Eli Elezra was. And I understood why I didn't know
him and I then explained it. Again I editorialized with some of my reasons
for not watching TV poker.

> Ahh, televised poker. I've watched all of about 40 minutes, with the
> longest stint about 15 minutes. What compels people to watch these things
> eludes me. I have no patience in watching childish, boring behavior,
> especially when the purpose is the promotion of something where skill is a

> relatively unimportant factor. I have more interest in watching the

> Lotto balls pop up, even though I don't buy tickets there either.
>
> But at least now I know why I didn't recognize the name.

Then FellKnight accused me of "railing against the 'no-name' players who are

regulars on TV and also in the biggest cash game in the world, simply
because you do not recognize them?"

After I explained to Fell that nothing I said indicated anything like
"railing against", he came back with "Then why in the name of hell are you

bitching about those of us who do know what's going on?"

I took me a few seconds when I read this comment to finally understand that
Fell was trolling me. I never once bitched about anyone who knew anything
about poker. My comments were directed at people that fawn all over
celebrities, and people that create celebrities out of people that are
basically just very lucky. Either Fell was trolling me or he felt that I
was singling out him and others for my comments.

Now, in that entire exchange I never once mentioned who I thought was
"fawning" over the celebrities. I only stated that I thought it was silly.
The reason I didn't mention any names, was because I really don't know much
about how most of you people think about those things, because I don't read
every post and every thread in RGP. I cherry pick what sounds interesting
and I sometimes will open posts of certain posters. If those posters
replies sound interesting I usually go back and start reading the thread at
the top.

If you and Fell feel that it was pointed at either of you, then, I guess if
I were you, I'd search inside to figure out why YOU thought I was referring
to you. I never, even once used either of your names.

So, finally. Yes, both of you got me to type a whole bunch in reference to
your troll posts and I'm guessing that got the two of you giggling like some
10 year old school kids.

Thing is, no one has fawned over anyone in this thread. Chris did a
copy/paste from the WSOP updates, Robert flew in on his high horse and
gave his get a life speech, and the rest of us just trolled the shit out
of him. Robert made it easier for us because every time we posted
something, no matter what it was, he assumed we were fawning over people
on TV. That made it much easier to troll him.

I mean, look at this post I got him to type just by pasting his own
message.

Thing is, I never claimed anyone in this thread fawned over anyone. My
comment was addressed to those that do fawn. Why YOU and FellKnight got

In your line of work it would be worthwhile to be better at reading
comprehension. Nothing I posted assumed that your trolling posts were
"fawning". I never said they were fawning. I was mainly explaining why I
didn't know Eli Elezra.

Show me where I attempted to appear an authority on poker. I never claimed
to know anyone in any of the inner circles nor have I claimed to know who
plays at what level, other than those I actually emailed, or they emailed
me. I never claimed to be greatly skilled at poker.

Of course it makes a difference.

If you aren't up to date on the lineup of a poker game you'll never play
in then you won't be allowed into heaven -- you'll spend a lifetime in
purgatory, procuring young boys for priests. Unless, of course, you leave
a substantial gift to the church in your will. Then it won't make a
difference.

Not true. Per John Paul II, purgatory is not a physical place, the
same as heaven and hell. And limbo was never a doctrine.

i think challenging one's institutions is a very healthy exercise, mike.
you may decide that republicans spending like hell reassign your vote, and
priests acting immorally trim your tithe. you can believe in some
principles and generally support the groups that agree, but when they
stray, it's up to the members to set them straight. they won't listen to

So there I was, soon to be a ward of the state in the loving care of
the RCC. I was to visit the ER twice due to the trauma the was the
result of corporal punishment. I can show scars from 40 years ago.

Sure the nuns saved me from wandering the streets as a homless
urchin, but at what cost? Perhaps the cost was to have IM accuse me of
being mentally ill and a "ugly dyke and miserable bitch". If the
accusations are true, IM can thank the RCC, for I was under the wing
of both priests and nuns for mine was a "special" case.

The conclusion I drew from being taken in by the RCC is that power
corrupts. When a group has power for nearly 2,000 years and is able to
hide its secrets, that corruption can take on monumental dimensions.
Imagine the fallout when you have a group of people who believe they
have all the answers, a group who denies their sexual problems, a
group who claims to speak to god, a group widespread, rich, secretive
and powerful enough to change history.

I remember collecting all our pennies for those poor pagen babies. I
sacrificed for innocent children. I prayed in church for their unsaved
souls. Then I wondered how many souls just one of those golden
candlestick holders would save.

The RCC has a rich history of treating fellow humans with great
inhumanity. From the Inquisitions, to the skeletal remains of newborns
found under convents, to Pope Pius waving goodbye to the Jews as they
boarded Nazi cattle cars, to present day where the RCC refuses to
allow superstious farmers any type of birth control thereby insuring
continuing poverty, ignorance and suffering.

Someone quoted a poll that said a vast majority believed in God.
Maybe. But the scene in many churches is quite different. Services on
Sundays are poorly attended and mostly by lonely old women who are
afraid of dying. A handful attend Mass in churches built for hundreds.
The clergy is dying of attrition, no parent wants their child to join
such a cult.

The situation is different on the other side of the street. There are
churches that celibrate life with dancing, music and joyful singing.
The people are packed to the rafters. The message is that God can be
understood by the average person, celebrations need not be done in
dead languages and no one person speaks for God. Some of these
churches celebrate spirituallity to standing room only crowds - daily.

People in America and elsewhere are shedding the shackles of
repression that was the RCC. They are expressing their spirituality in
many ways, from increasing numbers of Amish to the non-religion of
Zen.

The corruption of the RCC has been eating itself from the inside. Sure
they still have most of those gold candlestick holders, but nearly all
the money collected today is going to payoff the victims of
yeasterday. The RCC is a hollow remnant of what it used to be. One day
it will collapse on itself and the world will be better off.

You'd think that those with a direct voice to god would have been
able to avoid bankruptcy.

I'm going to live on the edge. No learning the lineup of the big game, and
not giving the Catholic church a dime. If there is a hell then I guess I'll
get there without a stop off in purgatory, and at least I'll be there with
most of the fun people, except for all those priests and their enablers.

Purgatory is just another church invention to make them more money. The rich
were allowed to 'buy' their way out of purgatory by giving more money to the
church.

It's like their phony 'Pray List.' The church gives you a list of things you
can check off for a priest to pray for you. You wrap up a $5 with the items
checked off ("Health for yourself; Good fortune; Health for family members;
World peace;" etc.) and turn it in.

Of course it isn't true. It is what they had me believing. You ever
see an orphaned 10 year old wandering the streets of America. Of
course not, that's why we have Social (ist?) Services.

Regarding the RCC doing worthwhile acts of charity, they seldom did
these things unless they have an audience for their 'selfless' acts of
kindness. Al Capone would fund soup kitchens and pay for poor people
burials. Even the most ruthless drug lords gain the community respect
by building hospitals and playgrounds.

As far as the RCC clothing and sheltering children, could we expect
anything less from any human? There were many gold candlesticks
polished from the tears of children abused by clergy.

You have succeded in understanding your motivations and behavior. You
have failed in understand why others act the way they do.

I didn't recognize any of the names. I did recall Eli after someone gave

Because they fight to take away my rights and the rights of my family

The RCC does not need nickles and dimes. An atheist donated 25 million

Our government doesn't need taxes from everybody, just the rich.

Look; the Catholic Church will take every dime they can get. They even have
Gift Shops where you can by a plastic Jesus for your dashboard. They don't
pay the priests shit. They'll go to a poor area in a poor country and build
a million dollar church with thousand dollar candles and staff it with a
priest uniformed in fancy robes and expensive tall pointy hat. All the while
the locals are starving and sick with disease and STILL asked to donate for
Jesus. Where do you think they got over $600,000,000 to pay off raped and
buggered children?

Mother Teresa? The one they flew home for medical attention while letting
the truly sick and dying expire? Let me tell you about Mother Teresa:

Mother Theresa

In Christopher Hitchen's book on Mother Theresa, titled "The Missionary
Position," he discloses the following:

* Ex-sisters of Mother Theresa's mission interviewed by Hitchens admitted
that, even though Mother Theresa's mission received tens of millions of
dollars of donations from around the world, it was all put directly into the
coffers of the Catholic Church; not a dime went towards helping the local
poor, or the mission, even for purchasing medicine for the mission.

* Charles Keating, infamous and convicted embezzler behind the failed
Lincoln Savings S&L debacle in the mid-80s, sent several million dollars
(taken from the funds of his swindled investors) to Mother Theresa's mission
before his debacle became public. The California Attorney General
prosecuting Keating personally wrote a letter to Mother Theresa explaining
the ill-gotten manner of those donations and requesting that she return
those funds; the letter and the request were ignored. The funds were never
returned.

* Mother Theresa was extremely authoritarian and would brook no dissent from
her staff. She even admonished the Pope, which tended to shun Mother Theresa
until she started receiving worldwide publicity for her efforts. Staff were
constantly forced to use worn-out, blunt needles which tended to tear as
much as pierce skin; and without anesthetics, such poor equipment caused
much pain. But Mother Theresa had no tolerance for pleas from her staff
asking for new needles or other requests; she rebuked them and threatened to
throw them out if they questioned her authority again.

* Mother Theresa refused to allow the administration of painkillers (or any
other medicine), telling the patients that their pain and suffering was for
their own good, that it 'pleased God.'

* Her staff had to work with the barest of supplies, often having only
well-worn towels and cold water to use as medical implements. Despite the
millions of dollars received by the mission, staff were expected to go out
into the (poverty-stricken) community and beg whenever they ran short of
supplies. They worked in a facility without ventilation or electricity,
working 12-16 hours a day and having only a small bed to call their own.
They were not allowed to have or maintain any other possessions.

* Despite Mother Theresa's draconian treatment of her patients and her
staff, she seemed to find no incongruity between that and her own decision
to be flown out of India all the way to Europe when she was having chest
pains, to check into the most upscale, expensive hospital - complete with
painkillers. Nor did she have any hesitation to choose between prayer and
surgical expertise when it turned out she needed a triple heart bypass. The
Catholic Church had no problem coming up with the funds to pay for this
(although even here they were on record for putting pressure on the airline,
the doctor and the hospital to donate their services).

Such actions are oh-so-typically the acts of TRUE Christians. There is
nothing in the above that I see that contradicts the tenets of biblical
scripture or of the Catholic Church.

Uh. Talking about poker would often involve topics that Doyle may have
mentioned in his book. It doesn't really involve identification of
individuals Doyle hustles into his game -- maybe the techniques Doyle uses
to hustle people into the game, but not the names of the people who fall
prey to his techniques.
