It depends on what you're currently running. If you have Vista, then
the upgrade is pretty painless. If you have XP, then you need to do
a clean install and then reinstall all you applications.
The other thing to look out for is to make sure all your applications
and your devices are supported under 7. I just bought a spanking new
piece of audio hardware only to discover that there are no Windows 7
drivers for it. Fortunately, I got Tech Support to send me a beta
version, which seems to be working so far.
As far as the differences, it's still Windows, but the user interface
seems just a little bit cooler than the predecessors. It's hard to
judge any differences in performance, but I think it's safe to say
that it's not any slower than the previous Windows systems. I've
only had it for about a week, but so far, it's been very stable.

For my new computer with Windows 7, I purchased Microsoft Office
Professional 2007 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher, Accounting
Express, Access - and an extra disk with some business attachment for
Outlook).
I had heard Outlook 2007 would not work with Windows 7 so I contacted MS and
asked. "Yes, of course it will work."
When I tried to get Newsgroups to work, I followed instructions until it
just ended when I was to click on News; it wasn't there. I contacted them
and got some woman in India that thought she could speak English. When I
tried explaining that I couldn't get Newsgroups, she took over my computer
and connected me with MSNBC.
Fucking MS and their cheap labor in India. I made her take the shit off and
told her to learn what Newsgroups was. She put me on hold (and probably
called MS in Washington). When she came back she said Outlook will not work
on Windows 7 for Newsgroup.
My computer didn't even come with an email program. I called and bitched so
they sent me Windows Live Mail. What a shitty program.
The original Microsoft guy emailed back and apologized about Outlook not
doing Newsgroups.
I hate new software.

Outlook 2007 has *never* had a newsreader as part of it. Neither has Outlook
2003, or older versions. Outlook Express (OE) has. OE has not been part of
Windows since XP. In Vista, Windows Mail was bundled and this had a
newsreader built in. In Windows 7 you choose your own newsreader....most
simply download the Windows Live Mail program from MS (Windows Live
Essentials). It has a newsreader built in. You can download Thunderbird, of
Forte Agent, or a number of other free or pay ones. Outlook Express cannot
be installed or run on a Vista or Windows 7 box.

If you are SERIOUS about news....
Go to Forteinc.com and download ForteAgent 6.0.
Very capable, 30 dollars works on 7, and does email too.

Yea, that's what I'm using now. The whole email program is not very good and
you can't Synchronize newsgroups. And with COX, my newsgroups comes in about
half the time.

That's where I used it last, before that computer quit.

I'm using Windows Live Mail. My problem is my provider, COX. They don't give
a shit if they support Newsgroups. When I call to bitch, the person usually
has not clue as to what Newsgroups even is. Eventually then pass me up to,
"Lever 1 Help." And they're usually not much help.

I usually like to stick with the free stuff when it comes to
downloaded software, but I happily paid the $30 for the Forte Agent
newsreader. I've tried several different news programs over the
years, but Agent still remains the the easiest and most intutitive to
use, IMO. YMMV, of course.
They've also included email capability in Agent, but I don't use it.
For email, I still use Eudora 7.0. Qualcomm, who created Eudora,
dropped support for it a while back, but the program has always been
very stable, and support has never been necessary. Also, the Mozilla
group adopted Eudora and are supposedly working on some sort of bridge
between it and Thunderbird. I don't know how that's supposed to
work, and I'm not sure I should care, because I find Eudora to be
superior to Thunderbird.
