Everyone knows that online full ring games have become much tighter
over the years. This is mainly attributable to the mega-tabling
basement dwellers who live off AA shoves and fpp bonuses. Get 5 or 6
of them on a table, and the game grinds to a near halt, becoming, if
not unbeatable, a tedious waste of time. Conversely, much of your
success is going to depend on avoiding these cretins as much as
possible. One way to do that is to join 9 player tables that have only
a few players on them. Most often, these will be the tables that fill
up with names you've never seen before. Basement dwellers hate getting
out of their comfort zone, and that includes playing short-handed,
even if only for a few minutes.

You have to be agile though. The typical pattern is that the game
fills up with unknown players, the great stats attract the BD's to the
waiting list, some weak players bust out, and the texture of the game
changes rapidly. So you have to keep repeating the process.

So that's my tip. Learn to play shorthanded (if you don't know
already), and get in the newly starting games. There's lots of
relatively easy money there.

Good post BillB. I have noticed the same thing in recent times. I
have PokerTracker and have about 800k hands in my database. As of
about a year ago the VP$IP was 29.66% (total of all players that were
at tables where I was involved). In the last year or so the VP$IP
rate has dropped to 21.49%. Big difference in tightness there. I
myself play at about 17%.

I have also noticed recently a bunch of players at about the 10% VP$IP
level. They always buy in for the minimum. Mostly appear to be
Orientals (Chinese?). The 10% players have a 100% Preflop raise
percentage. They get a hand and go “all in” every time. If they
lose they reload, if they win they are gone to another table. I guess
that since they have just doubled up they won’t risk that style of
play with the extra money.

Now you may ask how they are doing, well, they seem to be winning
overall more often than not. In fact I will tell you about one guy,
his name is “juilang” and he plays on PokerStars as I do. As of this
writing he has played 2336 hands at table where I was a member. His
VP$IP is 9.76%. His PFR is 9.76%. He is to the good $51.75. Now
that may not sound like much but I play $.10/.25 nolimit.

He is almost always playing at 23 tables at once. If he is as good/
lucky at his other tables then we might infer that 51.75 * 23 =
$1178.75. There are others that play this method that are doing well
also.

What I don’t get is how this guy can manage 23 tables and never miss a
step, you never have to wait for him, he never times out. Christ, if
I play two tables which I rarely do, I a fluster though out the ordeal
and manage to make mistakes. Of course I am watching TV at the same
time.

It's a typo for "AA Shovels", a well-respected brand of digging

Sorry, that was supposed to say AA shovers. There's a lot players now
in NL O8 who play something like 18 tables and they'll play almost no
hands. Once they get AA they just shove all in preflop every time, and
either pick up the blinds or get called by an inexperienced player (as
you know, any AA if favored all in preflop or most all non-AA hands).
You get enough of these guys in a game and it just kills it. Weaker
players are either wiped out by a bad preflop call for all their
chips, or scared off completely by frequently being asked to pay $50
to see a flop. The AA players don't like to play shorthanded because
1) they have no skillz 2) the blinds come around too fast

Whoops, I just reread what I wrote. It wasn't a typo after all. It is
supposed to read AA shoves.

Reminds me of that old saying, "I was only wrong once, and that was
when I thought I was wrong but I was actually right". I think Beldin
made that one up.

I saw a bunch of these bots on the UB very low limit tables a year ago.
They made the games unplayable when there would be 4-5 of them on a 9
handed table. I imagine they have a bot running with a human hanging
around to answer the bot question from Stars on the off chance it pops up.
Since Stars support seems to be better than UB perhaps you should report
your suspicions and see what they say. UB didn't believe me even though
their play was exactly as you describe and completely predictable with no
time variance.

Really?

There are two choices PER hand. Fold, Max raise if AA or KK. At 23
tables you only have to do this, about Once per 7 minutes. Plenty of
time to sign in to new games and stuff.

There is nothing else to do, Pokerstars makes the active window on top.

The most complicated thing to do, is to quit game, and start another Or
reload chips.

It would not be too difficult to do.

Well, you do make it sound simple.but the previously mentiond
"jiulang" has played 67, visible to PokerTracker, hands while at my
table. Of course some of the hands were not unique and played
multiple times. They range from any pair to any Ace (suited or not)
and a variety of other hands that I myelf might concider weak. I know
that he is being hit hot and heavy with decisions then has to return
to look to see if he has in fact doubled up and get off the table (or
maybe he just waits till that table comes round again). He would not
have to reload as PokerStar will do this for you if you configure it
correctly. Anyway try it and then tell me how easy it would be to not
miss a beat or keep anyone waiting.

I would but like I say I get confused when playing two. 23 tables!

Are you sure you're typing the name properly,
lookup before on various sites doesn't show
any record of this guy... (on either stars or ftp)

<snip>

> I would but like I say I get confused when playing two. 23 tables!

You're trying to play the hands you're being dealt...
he's not.

Try this:
go to Options -> Advanced multi-table options
ensure 'Popup table whenever user action is required'
is checked... then open 10 tables and stack them all
right on top of each other. Same size, same spot on
your screen. When you're dealt cards and a table
pops to the top of your stack, fold or jam.

If you're waiting for specifically QQ+ and AK,
you'll find you can handle a lot of tables at once.

Does take the fun out of the game though ;)

Ya, jiulang, lowercase.

jiulang is playing a lot more than QQ+ AK.

At this moment he is not playing on Stars. But he'll be back I
betcha.

I agree it's not a pleasant way to play but seems to be profitable.

How much are you down this year at PLO8 ring games?

Another point is that before 2010, full ring games
gave a very high VPP rate. With the new 2010
VPP changes, they will drop right off, and 6max
will give the best. So we may see a reduction in
the number of VPP-farming rocks at full-ring games.

Playing against these bots isn't the most fun thing in the world, but
it's certainly possible to grind out a small profit against them.
Since their play is so predictable, you need to steal their blinds
when you can and stay out of their way when they get involved unless
you have a very strong hand.

They should have all the vpps for the hand go to the winner of the
pot, or, alternatively, split among those who saw the flop. It would
create action and put the fpp miners out of business. Why should the
people actually playing the game earn fpps for those creatures?

Oh Gary, you know what I meant. I wouldn't continue playing if a
losing trend was established, ok? There is absolutely no way I could
ever be down over the course of a year. Just ain't gonna happen. I'd
be long gone. I can honestly say I don't recall ever having a losing

That is a graph of US federal government receipts and outlays, expressed as a % of GDP, up to and including fiscal 2009. It's scary because of the rapid and unprecedented divergence in the 2009 numbers. Receipts were 15% of GDP and outlays were 25% of GDP. That can't go on for very long at all without some dire consequences.

I've been playing shorthanded cash games almost exclusively for about
2 years. You can win a lot more (as well as lose a lot more), and
it's more fun, as you get to play more hands.
