Poker sites take screenshots of our computers?

Hi,

This must be an urban legend -- a friend of mine tells me that poker sites
regularly take screen shots of our computers to prevent cheating. Now, I
sometimes 'multi-task' by working on semi-confidential job stuff while
playing poker, so I was immediately interested!

This would seem to be an invasion of privacy.

Is it true, or an urban legend...

True. It is mentioned on pokerstars website under banned programs. I'm not
sure if it's a full screen shot or just a read of all open title bars. As
for the "semi-confidential work stuff", I'm sure they have seen so many
people surfing porn, even the bestiality sites don't phase them any more. I
wouldn't worry about it.

This is what I have read on Pokerstars:

********************
Can PokerStars see my internet browsing history, documents, or other private
files and information?
No. PokerStars takes your privacy very seriously and complies with relevant
Data Protection law. PokerStars does not collect personally-identifiable
information, other than that provided by the player during account
registration and routine security verifications. It is not possible for any
member of PokerStars staff to read or copy private data from your machine.
For more information, see our Privacy Policy.

Pokerstars (and some other sites) run a snapsnot scan of what programs
your computer is running while connected to the site. They are looking
for bots primarily. They cannot read information that is being worked on,
such as in an Office document.

In 2004 I played at Party and tried to program a bot from Winholdem. They
had a option to rename the application so it wouldn't show as 'winholdem'
on your task bar. Apparently that is how Party monitored what you had
running.

If you went to the Winholdem site you would get a warning to shut it down
in 60 seconds or you would be disconnected.

I think they can monitor your task bar.

You didn't look very hard. I googled "pokerstars banned programs". The first
result takes you to a page on pokerstars' website that says this:

What steps are you going to take to prevent players from using prohibited
tools and services?

We are going to look to see if any of those tools or services is running on
a player's computer. If we find one of the prohibited tools or services, we
will alert the player that they are running a prohibited tools or service
and tell them what it is. We will ask that they stop running the tool or
service immediately. If they comply, fine. If not, then we will prevent the
PokerStars client from running on their computer.

Are you going to look for anything else on players' computers?

Absolutely not. Our sole interest is in protecting our players and our site
from tools and services that we believe are bad for the integrity and
fairness of our games.

Party Poker used to clearly state in their Terms & Conditions that they
used screen captures as one possible means of detecting cheats. How often
they actually do it and whether other sites do likewise I cannot say.
Ultimately though, if you allow a program to run on your PC knowing it is
communicating over the Internet you should either have a very high level
of trust in the software publisher or run it on a machine that does not
contain sensitive data. If you don't have access to another PC either look
into the possibility of running the poker client in a virtual machine or
perhaps run it in the context of a user account with minimal security
privileges and permissions and don't open confidential docs whilst it's
running.

It's absolutely true. At least at Party Poker during the boom years. It
was a reactionary measure to that stupid, worthless, winholdem bot.

This was just a shell and screen scraper that came with no logic and you
wrote your own routines. My intent was to put together a tight aggressive
low limit bot that could grind out some extra cash. Unfortunately, this
engine had no registers or storage and you could not account for what
happened in previous rounds without trying to back into it based on
current actions.

If you call extending my play through a program with my poker logic
cheating, then guilty as charged.

It was a project that lasted about a month and I had a terrible time
debugging it. It also made me realize how complicated such a seemingly
simple task really was when you try to account for all possible situations
you encounter in poker.

All that said, I am pretty sure you really don't care and were just taking
a cheap shot as usual.

Actually , I was a bit disappointed that someone I had grown to respect
through our trading barbs and debates , had sunk to that level.

Also your remarks to Russ seem amazingly hypocritical now , also

I guess you just don't get it and you can believe I won't lose any sleep
over your disappointment in my failed attempt to program a bot.

I am also of the opinon that you respect no one including yourself.
