I liked a couple of their studio albums, but their live show was one of the
worst I've ever heard, and I saw a lot of shows back then.

concert, and I enjoyed them. They have some pretty good songs, and I

This was maybe a year after "Bebe la Strange", and they weren't interested
in playing their old stuff any more, or any straight up rock & roll FTM.
Most of their show was unrecorded experimental stuff that I thought was just
atonal and awful. The people I went with were just as put off.

They are a great band and, if anything, underrated. However, the
concert Clave attended is something I have heard about and was glad
that I missed. Of course, artists like to try out new stuff but people
who go to concerts want to hear at least some of the things they
like.

I've only seen them live once and they were excellent. However, like
almost any band, their concerts are variable. It is probably true that
no one can be great every time out. I never saw the Dead when they
weren't good but I bet they had some bad nights.

I saw the Aireplane several times and the Starship twice and they were
all over the map, the best band ever or mediocre and you couldn't tell
what you would get until you'd paid for your ticket and made the trip
to see them. More often than not, they were great and they did always
have a certain Grace.

I saw the Stones twice and it was like going to a great party with a
band that didn't care enough to tune their instruments. I hear that
they were great other times and I believe it.

The most _consistent_ concerts were Sly and the Family Stone. I went
to two of their concerts and they did not show eiither time.

Aside from that one Heart performance, I've only seen a couple of shows that
I'd say truly sucked -- The Who (Townshend was shitfaced before the show
even started, and Daltry wasn't anywhere near the high notes), and J. J.
Cale (astoundingly, memorably awful in just about every way).

Seger did a consistently outstanding show, as did Supertramp and the
Doobies -- I saw all of them at least three times.

Wow. I saw The Who in 1976, and they were amazing. I also saw them
when they did the Quadrophenia tour in the '90s, and they were great
then, too.

When I think of awful concerts I went to, the first one that comes to
mind is Seals and Crofts. It's not that they messed up. As far as I
could tell, they performed every song perfectly. It's just that they
were incredibly boring. Slow, nondescript song after slow,
nondescript song with "Diamond Girl" somewhere in the middle.

I remember seeing Rolling Thunder and the long string of acts coming
on before Dylan, who was better than usual with great backup
musicians.

But the high point was when one of the kids near me whined about
Ramblin' Jack "imitating Dylan." Dylan's whole early vocal approach
was a studied imitation of Jack Elliot who had been doing that schtick
when Bob was still a kid in Minnesota.

Last time I saw Dylan was 2000 or 2001 playing with Phil (Lesh) and
Friends, they were alternating headliners on a nightly basis. Anyway,
both acts were great, but Dylan was truly amazing.

Because I was a counselor at a summer camp, and the concert was a camp
activity. It was my job to be there.

BTW, the opening act at this show was Livingston Taylor. Although I
really wanted to like him, he was almost, but not quite as boring as
Seals and Crofts.

Another concert I was forced to go to as a camp counselor was The
Carpenters. It was ironic because at first, everyone but me wanted
to go, and just as I got done convincing all my friends not to go, I
got drafted and had no choice.

As it turned out, though, The Carpenters were very, very good, and I'm
glad that I got to see that legendary act when I had the chance.

She had a wonderful voice. Their song choices weren't what I like but

Not that I recall.

There was one memorable moment of embarrassment during the concert.
They brought out some guy whose name I never caught as a guest singer.
He came up next to Karen and put his arm around her for a little
dance, but his hand ended up pretty much on her butt. She quickly
(and not so subtly, IMO) grabbed it and moved it higher. I still
wonder how many people noticed this, as I don't recall anyone else
mentioning it.

escapes me at the moment. It was not the Coliseum.

I don't think "cult following" is a fair description of the huge
number of people, including his fellow performers, who think he's
wonderful.

On the other hand, I don't think he's a great _performer_ I have long
maintained that he would have never gotten a recording contract if he
had not written such great songs. However, it has been pointed out
that Ramblin Jack Elliott, among others with who had similar styles,
were recording regularly when Dylan came on the scene, so I guess he
would have found a niche.

His songwriting drew wonderful musicians into his circle and they
performed with him live and on recordings. Many of his albums had an
all-star band of whatever era they were recorded in. Besides his
songwriting he seems to have had a charisma or force of personality
that I never see or hear in his work but it must be there.

And I think Robert Hunter wrote better lyrics and Joni Mitchell is a
much better songwriter than Dylan, so maybe I have a blind spot.

He gets tons of votes in "best singer" polls, many more than he would
get if what you say is true. He is highly rated _among his fellow
musicians_ as a songwriter and not as a performer. However, the public
and some critics do rate him highly in the other categories.
