I've only seen them live once and they were excellent. However, like
almost any band, their concerts are variable. It is probably true that
no one can be great every time out. I never saw the Dead when they
weren't good but I bet they had some bad nights.
I saw the Aireplane several times and the Starship twice and they were
all over the map, the best band ever or mediocre and you couldn't tell
what you would get until you'd paid for your ticket and made the trip
to see them. More often than not, they were great and they did always
have a certain Grace.
I saw the Stones twice and it was like going to a great party with a
band that didn't care enough to tune their instruments. I hear that
they were great other times and I believe it.
The most _consistent_ concerts were Sly and the Family Stone. I went
to two of their concerts and they did not show eiither time.
