like Absolute Safety are delusional and destructive. Yet this is what
the citizenry screams out every time something threatening happens:
please, take more of our privacy away; monitor more of our
communications; ban more of us from flying; engage in rituals to
create the illusion of Strength; imprison more people without charges;
take more and more control and power so you can Keep Us Safe.
This is what inevitably happens to a citizenry that is fed a steady
diet of fear and terror for years. It regresses into pure childhood.
The 5-year-old laying awake in bed, frightened by monsters in the
closet, who then crawls into his parents' bed to feel Protected and
Safe, is the same as a citizenry planted in front of the television,
petrified by endless imagery of scary Muslim monsters, who then
collectively crawl to Government and demand that they take more power
and control in order to keep them Protected and Safe. "

You could never admit it, but the fear, pervasive, engineered,
stupefying fear that dominates life in America today is a product of
unregulated capitalism. A culture that has followed the money train
like a religion, selling out everything from our children to our bodies
to our dignity and our religions in the process. That drags us all
down, and teaches us that there is no up but through consumption. And
you blame this culture of fear on the left? On climate scientists? I
guess you didn't notice that whole thing with the anthrax, and the war
in Iraq?
Is this really the best there is, Paul? You don't seem terribly happy
with it yourself. I wish I lived in a world that was more than a hollow
sales pitch, or an endless carrot chase made of manipulation and
slavery. Maybe I'm being too hard on the old rat race, eh? Can you

I always count on you two to teach me what a naive young guy like myself
really needs to know. I gotta admit, I'm a little behind on this
"necessary" fear stuff. It's just not makin' sense to me. Sounds
sorta fascist and evil. But then who am I to question a defender of
freedom such as yourself? Maybe if I started calling it "hyperbolic

suggest that we should give everybody an aptitude test and determine
their occupation, or that we should clone and grow Deltas to happily
grind out the undesirable work.

fucking body scanners and the fear, fear, fear, fear, fear! I'll

where the water rotates the other way. Because down here at ground zero
in America all this is enough to make a guy question his sanity!
And now here you are telling me why this is all "necessary" and look
what happened, you got me all worked up. You're basically just another
heart disease risk factor at this point. So if you'll excuse me, I need
to go turn on the advertising machine and try to relax until the Ambien
kicks in. I know what's best for me, alright.

I am the master of the middle ... the master of the opportunity ... the
master of letting people choose their own fate.
You suggest that life with profit is just too much for YOU. It is YOU that
speaks of the old rat race, not I.
I believe that freedom is worth keeping and that freedom to succeed is
always balanced by freedom to fail.
You sound like you are in the wrong job for you. You are free to choose a
different path. You sound like you live in a place that is wrong for you.

It sounds like you need some change in your life to find some dignity. You
are free to do it, if you really want it. Waiting for the government to
give it to you will not work. Turn off the TV and read a good book without
advertising and no sex or violence ... there are millions of them to choose
from. The "fear" is in your head ... if you are hearing voices, seek help.

What is "necessary?" What are you talking about? Freedom is not necessary
... I just think it is desirable.
If you mean you need to sit or lay in front of the television screen and
take sleeping tablets to relax, you might look to something other than my
belief in freedom to choose as your main risk factor.

I don't actually watch much of any TV. The "fear" is certainly
everywhere - on the news, in the speeches, in the advertising, even in
the weather reports - and you surely know this. The sex and violence is
inescapable for any of us who leave the house every day.

They do, but not always directly. There are actually many literary
devices and styles by which the author does not write literally what he
or she actually means. Often, such a style is more effective and may
also be more interesting. If you only understand the boring, I'm sorry

education you are so able to properly read, and even prolifically and
skillfully produce, satire. And yet with all of Pickle's training and
