Apparently the casino will remain.

Everyone knew the day was coming and now it's a reality. After 75
years of horse racing, Betfair Hollywood Park will end its operations
following the final race of its autumn meeting Dec. 22.

The ghosts of the horses whipped until they broke, will haunt the site for many years.

Fewer people are entertained by animal cruelty. Take for instance circuses. Cirque du Soleil, which has no animals, opens new venues often and has seen increasing attendance and ticket prices. Compare that to Ringling Bros; is that show even still open?

Animal racing is going the way of dog fights and bear baiting. It is one of the few acceptable instances of man's inhumanity to animals.

At least we'll still have "California Split" to remember.

You are probably correct.

But, I pasted a column from a 'professional' handicapper explaining why he would never bet on a horse that didn't get the whip. There are numerous articles about racing authorities introducing "soft" or padded whip requirements, which have nearly all been rejected. Face it, whipping the horses is just part of the fun of an afternoon punting at the track.

I thought the article said the casino would remain.

So what are they going to do, build a mall or something? That would
be great, the locals won't have to travel so far to shoplift.

You want to get behind something noble, Bea? I got two suggestions
for you. #1 is the Veal Industry, and #2 is RODEOS!!! You could make
both illegal tomorrow and I will sign my name to the petition. They
both suck, bad, really bad.

That one is just about won.

Or are you talking about those things that happen in the country, where everyone wears a cowboy hat and folks ain't afraid to get shit in their boots? I think that one is dying, too. They're more poker shows on TV now than rodeos.

And that's why they are both dying. Now it's horseracing's turn. In a few years you won't even miss it, just like foxhunting.

Next we might go after something just as barbaric. They have this game of polo in Afghanistan, where riders atop horse run around poloing a goat's carcass.

Whatever, don't bet on racetracks to survive for another generation.

And we agree again. Perhaps we could combine those ideas with the Cirque du Soleil one, and have human-only rodeos.
