Here we are, a group of science and math literate people(!), and someone
thinks we're likely to be persuaded to join a mediaeval religion. What a
good idea - instead of playing lotto we could be playing 'stone the rape
victim'.

I don't see it as being suckered too as I view it
as my self appointed task to check these posts out
to determine whether they are reportable spam or not.

I did get suckered by a site that wanted me to add
their link, visited only to have my computer shut down,
had to start in safe mode and run the dos side of the
ACG virus software for hours only to find the clean
up left me with my MSN/bing searches hijacked to
some stupid ass search engine worse then bing. Had
to go go datamicro and get a hyjack tool that leaves
you guessing what to strip out of regedit. arrrrgh.

Why would someone smart enough to trick people's
puters be dumb enough to think victims would buy
something from the switched to site? The .000001
solution?

Do you know how they did that? Was it some sort of script on the site
you visited?

I've had occasional problems, but they've always been intercepted by my
browser or cured by using task manager to kill the browser session.

It downloaded in place of the site. Went to a link that
used to be good, got a blank white page with the loading
thing turning in the title box. By the time I realized
it wasn't ever going to deliver the page it was too late.

Since then I've found this thing is worse then I thought.

It has disabled updates of AVG which was updated and didn't
prevent it anyway. I got SuperAntiSpyware, it can't find it.
I tried Malwarebytes, won't stay loaded for more then ten
seconds. Checked Hosts, nothing in there. Nothing shows
up the msn or third party ramped up process checker as
running while my search is being redirected. I suspect it
is something new the spyware killers have to add to their
bag of tricks before I'll be fully rid of it.

Sounds as though it might have overwritten a legitimate process :(

Do you have a firewall which lets you specify which programs have access
to where? (I use ZoneAlarm). If the spyware is stealing your passwords
etc, at least you can stop it communicating them to the outside world.

Good luck in hunting and killing the rogue.

British Telecom advertise on the telly how they can help companies run
their IT. BT are my telephone provider, and via a subsidiary, my ISP. I
have opted for electronic billing for my telephone account. To download
the bills, I have to access the internet with browser security set to
low. Doesn't inspire confidence in the advice they give commercial
customers if they are too fuckwitted to manage their own site in a way
that ensures their customers' security.

'Nother thought. I use Windows XP which takes regular system checkpoints
for me. When things go wrong, I can restore to previous settings. Is
that an option for you?

I've got xp too I haven't set a setting in years unless it's
an automatic feature.

The forums did point me back to datamicro's Hyjackthis only
this time I ran the scan with a log and submitted it to
datamicro to analyze which takes about five minutes. They
don't do anything actually but provide a list of what their
codes mean. Thanks to that I found I'd missed 013 and 017
which seems to have stopped the search hijacking for now.

If it helps...

I don't run virus software - I let them run and I play with them like
some sort a puzzle!

I can most normally work out where it/they (the virus) are going and
figure a solution.

However on the very rear occasions I cant I just reinstall windows XP
(takes me about 4hrs to get back to how I like the settings set) for
the ultimate clean drive.

I also, run a second hard-drive for all important and personal stuff
so if C-drive (which is less than 20gb on all puters) does go up the
shoot, I simply disconnect this ‘other’ drive, thus saving my
important files.

Good luck,

What about all the zillions of corrections that Microsoft have issued to
Windows XP - do you download them all again or do you never install patches?

That's funny "rear occasions" ;-)

This was the first thing that got through in years
that actually affected my ability to do whatever it
is that I do with my puter.

What also ticked me off is it disabled the anti-virus
software from updating even though it had been updated
within days and kept the new stuff I tried from running.

Note: If your anti-virus software is disabled do not
delete it as it isn't actually gone bad just disabled
and you won't be able to install it again anyway without
getting rid of the virus/malware/hijacker first.

The only thing that worked was data micro's (free)
Hyjackthis and after I set Win xp back to Nov 1st
thanks to Evil Nigel.

I turned that shit off after one of them locked up win98 and
never looked back or suffered a problem I could identify for
not installing the patches. I suspect they actually start
to screw up older versions as they bring a new one out for
sale. Robert

I install XP (up to SP2 from an old CD) only and turn off any updates
thereafter.

I know others that run win98 and have done so for years, and wont
change.

They for whatever have their reasons, and I never asked, apart from
the fact that win98 does exactly what they require and they need no
more.

If it does what you need, why upgrade? As this is where most problems
lay – within, via and after the upgrade!

...I had a similar problem with the Windows Vista Premium OS recently, where
my BitDefender Antivirus 2010 refused to update and kept showing that it was
turned off even though it wasn't.

I used SpyBot's free latest creation to search and immunize against
malware, and then un-installed and re-installed BitDefender. That seemed to
correct the situation so far...But it always leaves a feeling of distrust in
any software you run or websites you visit anymore...using free or
subscription antivirus programs that can be so easily defeated or fooled is
not a good feeling.

It appears protection is only as good as the latest update.

The thing that got me disabled or hid from all the other
scans and fixers I tried until I removed it manually from
Registry with Hyjackthis, then all the other stuff started
working again. Now the virus guys actually offer free anti
virus software that cleans out competitors and installs their
own virus.
