Can Barstow's book be considered a Bible to the Gambler? If we were to
choose the best books on gambling would Barstow be in the list?
I am not beaming up the book. Just want to know some fellow Craps
Players feedback.
Does anyone want to start a list of best books to own in their Craps
library?
I have the Barstow book ( no pun intended ), "Beat the House" by F.
Lemback and now that I look everything else is about Blackjack. One or
two books on Baccarat. If I would have spent more time on Craps I don't
think I would have wasted so much time on Blackjack and its books.
I also now own the craps book by Larry Edell and Andrea Foote. Good
reading and information about betting on probabilities.
Well I started the list: what's yours look like?
Thad
Heh heh.. I put it in my usual category. Professionals
do not write books. They make money.
Andrea Foote obviously speaks like an "expert" here so she can make $$$
selling her book.
I HATE being under foote!!!!

"I can remember when having "safe sex" meant having a padded headboard".
The ones I don't like are the so called professionals who charge
excessive amounts of money for garbage systems.
But overall I agree with you. A good gambler does not need to sell books
to make money. The casino has plenty to give if you know how to make the
withdrawals.
Thad
Alan, I never said I was an expert at anything. And I did not write "Make
Your Living Playing Craps", Larry Edell did.
I do love the game of craps, and play often, and post often.

Larry Edell and Andrea Foote, publishers of "THE CRAPSHOOTER", the ONLY
newsletter devoted exclusively to casino craps, offers a FREE issue to
anyone sending us their US MAIL name and address! We also publish "MAKE
YOUR LIVING PLAYING CRAPS", and, "THE HOOKERS GUIDE TO CRAPS."
My vote goes to "Craps System Tester" $24.95, by Erick St. Germain. It
has 35,000 _actual_ casino dice rolls, in 2 different casinos. That's
about 300 hours of play, or about 5 weeks full time play! It is
different from a simulator. If a system works on this, and gives a
decent profit, then you can start posting how good your system is. Just
kidding, but I like the book.

One book that I would add to your library, (and the only one you need as far
as I'm concerned), "Winning Casino Craps", Edwin Silberstang. Basics,
strategies, and a good story. Been using his advice since playing the game for
the first time, 12 sessions ago. Won 11 lost 1 so far. Try it, you'll like
it.

IMO pretty good
1. "Craps--Take the Money and Run" Henry J. Tamburin
2. "Winning Craps for the Serious Player" J. Edward Allen
3. "Casino Games" John Gollehon
4. "A Book on Casino Gambling" Graham & Tulcea
5. "Beat the House Companion" Avery Cordoza
IMO unacceptable superstition
6. "Beat the Craps Out of the Casinos" Frank Scoblete
7. "John Patrick's Advanced Craps" guess who
Overall, I think I like Tamburin's book the best. He does recommend
"qualifying" a shooter, but at least he admits it has no logical basis.
His money-management section is very good. Patrick has some good
money-management advice, too, especially on regression, but he has an
extremely irritating writing style, makes several mistakes in his odds
calculations and advocates charting, not walking under ladders, not
breaking mirrors, etc., etc.

The best book on gaming that I've read (including a very careful look at
craps) is John Scarne's New Complete Guide to Gambling. The guy seems to
know everything about gaming, including a debunk of systems, and the
games and bets to always stay away from. Using his advice has made my
craps playing a more profitable (or, less expensive) endeavor. His book
on Poker is also excellent.

Barstow's book has many systems for all types of players, they've been tested
over actual casino play....crack that book my friend....no system works all
the time and somedays no matter what you do you can't win "loss limit".
The system that gives the best results in my opinion is the pattern betting
method with a simple bet progression of 1 2 3 5 7 units, but switching to
repeat reverse is paramount when necessary....geesh if it was that easy the
casinos we be broke huh! Problem its boring at times but....
You know I've just given to you what some people would pay good $$ for <grin>
GOOD LUCK!!
Frank..... The only bad bet is one that doesn't win!
Then you probably should take your name out of the "credits"
in the sig.
>Well I started the list: what's yours look like?
I would add:
Mini-Max Craps (George Stearn)
Banker's Strategy (Silverthorne)
Neural Strategy (Silverthorne)
All can be purchased through Silverthorne Publishing, New Mexico.
I managed to pull off a $5 profit at a $1 craps table. I did all the crazy stuff too. The Barstow
system is kinda neat. It takes advantage of small runs later in the progression of bets.
Has anyone else really used this system to advantage?
Thad
Although we prefer Wincraps, we also like the commercial program, "Beat
The House", because it takes a longer time between rolls, and the dealer
"talks" more. It more accurately portrays a "real" game. I think it costs
about $40 at most software stores.
Regarding the Barstow, or Patrick or Benson, or any other similar system,
I have found that they all all work some of the time, even most of the
time. I have also found that the key to winning (in my opinion only) is,
as you know, charting the table, and being able and willing to switch
back and forth from "do" to "don't". I know, the math guys here (for whom
I have great respect, really) will say to bet on the "low vig" bets only,
but we have won more by charting.
"Geez, those hardways are sure hitting, I think I'll throw out four bucks on all the hard ways". (Even though hardways are dumb bets)
"Hmmm that six sure is hitting, I'll think I'll press my bet". (Even if it is not part of the system you are playing).
"Yum, these free rum and cokes sure taste great". (Drink all you want but NOT so it affects your judgement. Why in the world do you
think the casinos give the drinks away!).
Gamblers get greedy when they are ahead. They make dumb bets hoping for a big payoff. What the hell, they are playing with the
"casino's" money anyway. Bullshit. Once the chips are in your rack they are YOURS.
The best systems in the world will never work if you don't stick to them. DISCIPLINE! If you want to make hunch bets, great. Do it.
But then THAT's your system. Don't combine hunch bets with another system. Have a win and loss goal and stick to it!!! How many
people are in on a hot roll, and then piss it all away hoping to catch "another" hot shooter? Don't do it! Leave after a hot shooter, or if
you must, stay for one more but if you don't win anything on that shooter, leave. DISCIPLINE! Don't chase your losses waiting for the
hot shooter that is "due any minute".
Yes the casino makes it easy to get caught up in the environment and do dumb things. We have all done them. Experiment with
different systems. I love doing that. I love tweaking a system to make it a "little better". Just stick to the one you are playing at the
time. DISCIPLINE! I hate to sound like John Patrick but when he stresses discipline he is right on. It is a often overlooked skill that all
gamblers need to master.
