After having received ridulous room rate quotes for October trip in Las
Vegas (eg Dessert Inn $215 per night) I've decided to try Reno instead.
Anyone have a suggestion as to where to stay in the casino area? How is
the craps situation in Reno? How cold is Reno in October? Your input is
greatly appreciated.

I like the Nevada Club. It feels like the 1930's in there. Very friendly.

Yeah, I stayed at the Custard Suite in the Dessert Inn once. A bit
sticky. :P

Try the Nevada Gambler for lots of info about Reno and other towns in
Nevada.

My personal favorite is the VIRGINIAN Hotel & Casino. Not because the
action there is good(it's not), but because it's twenty feet away from the
hottest craps, blackjack, slot, and racebook action in all of Reno at the
CLUB CAL-NEVA, which has no hotel of it's own.

The Virginian is clean, reasonable, and friendly, but the Club Cal-Neva
blows every other casino away. For example, on the second floor, you can
double-down after you split pairs in a SINGLE-DECK game. Single-0
roulette is on the second floor as well. $1 craps, again on the second
floor. And some of the finest food values in all of Nevada are in the
Club Cal-Neva as well.

You COULD go to the Reno Hilton and pay five times as much.....but why?

You're right about the Cal-Neva. I've playing there for years, it is the
best bet in town- the only other place that gives the player a break like
the Cal-Neva is Binions in downtown Vegas, I wish all places gave the same
odds as those two

Craps in Reno is good but not great. The best odds I saw there were 5x, at
a $1 min table (@ the riverboat). Unfortunately, the table was fairly dead.
Contrast this with Vegas, where the Stratosphere and Binion's Horseshoe
both offer 100x odds for the same $1 min.
Oddly, I always seem to have a better time in Reno, maybe because there are
fewer distractions (from my gambling). Good Luck.

I have always been rather partial to Circus Circus. On a week night not
that long ago I got a room you couldn't see across for $45 or thereabouts.
It's located just a couple blocks from the middle of town (i.e. the "Biggest
Little Town" sign), within easy walking distance of the El Dorado, Flamingo,
Sundowner (my three other favorite haunts), and the Cal-Neva (which I am
definitely going to have to check out next time).
