Should she take a vitamin supplement? Are they all animal free?
Thanks

There is something WRONG with you --- get a life and move on to another
NG. Last I heard this Is still a "VEGETARIAN" newsgroup. If you don't
agree with the topic of discussion, please move on.
I don't mean to be rude but Cam is asking for advice from a vegetarian and
if you're not, you don't qualify...
Now for Cam, as long as your daughter eats a well balanced diet there
should be nothing to worry about... She could be craving Doritos all the
time, dry pasta is better for her :-). Try to ensure she gets plenty of
legumes (lentils, kidney beans, chick peas, etc), tofu, and if she is not
vegan, dairy products and eggs.
Again, I certainly wouldn't worry. Just make sure she is eating healthy
foods and to my knowledge supplements are vegetarian.
hope this helps
Thanks
Get a life... last time I heard this was still a free country, so who
the hell died and made you boss? This poor guy's daughter is killing
herself and all you jerks care about is having her do it right. If you
eat nothing but vegetables, there is something WRONG with YOU, not me.
I recognize the fact that humans are supposed to include meat as part of
a natural diet... so what the hell's your excuse?
>
> I don't mean to be rude but Cam is asking for advice from a vegetarian and
Sure you do... and you've done a damn fine job of it too.
As far as asking for advice from a veggie, isn't that akin to the cancer
patient asking for advice from someone dying from the same disease?

Then, Cam, hope to get her to the doctor before it's too late.

Are you a doctor? Registered dietician? Or just hoping that your goofy
advice won't kill the girl?
>Just make sure she is eating healthy
(that's impossible if she's not consuming some meat)

Funny how your wonderful diet HAS to include supplements to keep you
alive, isn't it? DUH - What does that tell you?
Uh, last I heard eating raw pasta won't kill ya'. Nobody said that's all
she was eating.

What's wrong with me?

"Fact?" "Supposed to?" What does "supposed to" mean in this context?!
> As far as asking for advice from a veggie, isn't that akin to the cancer

Yes. Vegetarians, by there very nature, are totally ignorant when it comes
to nutrition information. Thanks goodness you were here for her.

No, actually my diet _doesn't_have_ to include supplements to keep me
healthy. What on earth would make you think it did?!

Speaking of cancer, who has the greater chance of getting it, a
vegetarian or a meat-eater?

You might try reading some nutritional information written this
century, Gary.

Gary, you should be taking supplements, too, you know. Modern
agricultural methods have robbed many foods of their nutrients. And God
only knows what is in the meat you are eating.
THANK YOU for that reply! My words ring right along with yours. When
I read that, I could only think of how much I would love to flame these
so-called meat lovers and tell them ALL to get off the veg NG's and move
on to a low-intelligance NG. If these meat eaters want to "convert" us,
or at least make a point, they're doing EXACTLY the opposite. These
senseless posts only FURTHER my avoidance of a meat-filled diet, seeing
as to what meat-eating can, apparently, do for your brain. Carnivores, if
you're trying to make a point, either do it on a non-veg NG or at least
present your case in an intelligent manner. And I used to be a full-
fledged, all-out, full-boar meat eater who ordered Meat Lovers' pizzas
and considered meatless foods to be unedible. I've been there, and
believe me, vegetarianism is much better.
Anyway, although this isn't posted to the original poster, here's a
comment on the raw pasta craving. Relax! As long as she is eating a
health-promoting diet ALONG with the pasta, she will be fine. Back in
early '96, I craved cereal constantly, and made it a point to have a
small bowl of cereal with every meal I ate. It lasted about 4 months and
went away. Right now, I have a similar craving for frozen desserts. At
first I thought those cravings were deficiency-related, but after
consulting with a dietician, I discovered that they were not. They
actually turned out to be stress-related, as the foods I craved increased
serotonin levels in the body. Your daughter may be going through stress
that is leading her to crave carbohydrates, which act as a "calming pill.
" Also, if her diet was low in carbs before, she may be reacting to a
carb deficiency by "loading up." Ask her what she was eating before the
cravings to see if this could be so.
Whatever the case, I suggest you view it as a craving related to
something possibly stressful in her life. School pressures may be the
cause. As long as her diet is providing her enough calories and essential
vitamins/minerals, she's fine......but you may want to see if something
is perhaps causing her unusual stress, as was the case in my cravings.
(And, it is NOT a "meat deficiency;" any vitamin or mineral she could
possibly be deficient of is obtainable in vegetarian food or supplements.
) Females, also, are more prone to cravings due to fluctuating hormones
and body chemistry, so it's not that unusual; in fact, quite common. Try
not to make a big deal out of it, or point it out a lot, since this may
put stress on her which would lead to more cravings. I understand the
power of stress in eating, since I have endured eating disorders due to
tremendous stress; so never overlook it in a case of eating oddities.

I'm not saying supplements are required... If you look at the original
post, Cam was asking if supplements were OK on a vegetarian diet.
This is the most ridiculous response I have read yet. I have not eaten meat
in 6 years. I have friends who have not eaten anything from an animal all of
their life. I have been completely vegan for over a year now, and I just got
the results back from a physical exam. Do you want to compare blood reports
with me? I wonder who's cholesterol is lower? I wonder who has more calcium
and minerals and vitamins in their blood. I'd love to print up the results of
my blood test here and compare them to yours. Let's see who is at higher risk
for a heart attack.

I read your note on the NewsGroup area about your question of supplements
for your daughter. I am a chiropractor and recommend a plant-based diet
to my patients. A great book I would recommend that discusses vegetarian
diet and healthy implications for children is "Dr. Attwood's Low Fat
Prescription For Kids." His book gives parents confidence in supporting
their children to avoid meat in their diet and his material is supported
by medical research.
As far as supplements go, I recommend a whole food concentrate of raw
fruits, vegetables and whole grains to my patients called Juice Plus.
This also contains the live enzymes found in whole foods so important to
diet and digestion. The latest nutritional medical research all points to
whole foods or whole food concentrates rather than fragmented or extracted
vitamin and mineral supplements. If you are interested in more info on the
question of vitamin supplementation vs. whole food concentrates you can
e-mail my friend T. Wood at Wood...@aol.com.
Please write to me if you have any other questions. I would be happy to
include you on our free clinical newsletter I send to my patients entitled
"Whole Food Wellness & Nutrition."
