Most airlines don't care very much for vegetarians, and SAS is
no different. I had asked them several questions in a letter
6 weeks back to which I received a more or less useless reply
today (6 May) from Bert Str|mberg, director, customer relations.
There is one thing which might interest some of you - the extent
of vegetarian consumption.

"On our flights we serve approximately 35000 vegetarian meals
every year. In addition to these meals, 4000 meals of the
type VLML, AVML (Asiatic/Indian vegetarian meal) or RVML
(raw vegetarian meal) are served yearly, of which 400 are
VLML."

VGML is supposed to be strictly vegetarian according to him,
but is never so in practice. VLML contains eggs and dairy products.

SAS does not intend to provide vegetarian meals on shorter
flights.

On Finnair, one can request a special meal "vegetarian, excluding
eggs and milk products" which seems to work well.

How do other airlines compare ?

As a footnote, SAS is doing badly enough and may not exist for
too long. There is already some plan of fusing KLM, SAS, Austrian
and some fourth airline into a larger airline.

With regards,

In Canada we have Canadian Airlines which provides four vegetarian choices:
Vegetarian (vegan), Lacto, lacto-ovo, asian, and raw (make that five
choices). I'm not sure what Air Canada offers. So, if you're ever flying to
Canada, I'd suggest Canadian Airlines. Their meals aren't half bad either.

I've travelled on Air Canada, and I too am not sure what they offer :).
Their vegetarian meal was mostly lettuce, with some
salt and pepper to liven it up.
I didn't eat much on that flight.
But, then, hey, neither was anyone else.
The seats were so cramped,
nobody could get sufficient elbow action to
shovel the food from their plate to their mouth :) .

Well, my last trip on Canadian Airlines featured a very nice vegan meal on
the first flight, and a truly yucky lacto meal on the way back. I had asked
for vegetarian, and even though I do eat dairy products, I was certainly
not expecting to see them.

So I think it really depends what flight you get (these were the same
routes, just opposite directions).

On the other hand, the British Airways flights I have had offered really
good vegan dinners on first-class service trays. Cool.

That's why I prefer Canadian Airlines, better food, etc. I have
found that the meals are quite often Vegan, whether you specify
LOveg or whatever. Mindyou I haven't flown for a while now.

I found that the meals were pretty good, but small...mind you
I eat like a pig (horse?)...big appitite. Always tempted to
ask the person sitting next to me if I could have their uneaten
salad...(ever wanted to do that???)

Always call ahead atleast 24hrs.

bon voyage.

One airline I had a really good experience with in the US was Delta
Airlines. Their no-dairy veg meal was actually pretty good. The
dinner I had was a hot lentil and rice casserole of some kind with
tomato sauce. It wasn't fantastic, but it was definately better than
any other airline I've every ordered one on. (Including Canadian
Airlines and Air Canada!)

Well, I have the fortune to fly both Canadian and Air Canada in
April. I ordered a vegitarian meal on both flights and was pleased with the
selection. I'm sorry to say that I can't recall the meal on Canadian
(I was going out for a job interview and so was preoccupied), but
Air Canada gave me cabbage rolls with veggies. The dessert was a bit
disappointing, fruit that was not as fresh as it could have been.
The fun part with ordering a special meal is that usually I end up
getting my meal before anyone else in the cabin. This is great if
one is hungry, but not so great if the persons sitting next to you
are hungry. I was always finished eating when they were just getting
their meals!

Anyway, I kept the slip of paper that came with my Air Canada meal and
they proudly claim to offer a selection of 16 different special meals.
And I list:

Baby
Children
Diabetic
Fish
Fruit Plate
Gluten Free
Hindu
Kosher
Low Fat/Low Cholestrol
Low Calorie
Low Salt
Moslem
Vegetarian
Vegetarian - Lacto-Ovo
Nutri-Action
Bland/Ulcer

Does anyone know what Nutri-Action is?

My experience with airline travel/food has actually been quite positive.
In general, I have noticed that whatever the vegetarian meal is, it seems
to be much more interesting than the non-veg meal. I always have some stranger
peering over my plate asking how I got something that looks/smells really yummy
and they got stuck with their boiled rubber chicken. I must give British
Airways a real plug here. They always prepare a really good veg meal (I'm
not vegan, so I can't vouch for those meals). The vegetables are usually
cooked without being overcooked, and spiced nicely. Last Christmas, I had
the pleasure of flying Business class from Philadelphia to London, and the
food they served there was...well, it was excellent. On the trip to London,
I had the regular veg meal (very good rattatouile type dish), and on the
way back, I opted for the Indian Veg meal. Almost as good as an Indian
restaurant, and the deserts and snacks they served were in the same style
too!
Oh well, I've got to run.
Good Eats, folks!

Does anyone know anything about vegetarian food on Air France? Is there a
lacto-ovo option?
