Morningstar farms veggie dogs come frozen in a package of 8
I only need 2 or 3 at a time
The package says to keep frozen, but it's next to impossible to
seperate the veggie dogs while they're frozen - they're encased in a
layer of ice, and held together by the ice between them - it's a
solid block of veggie dogs that can't be broken apart or melted with
water in a short (or long) amount of time.
Does anyone here have experience with these things? Is there a secret
way to pry them apart? I could have them almost every day, but the
process of getting them ready to cook is annoying. I'm not well versed
in the dynamics of veggie dogs, so I don't know if it safe to let them
thaw out and then refreeze them individually. Any advice is
appreciated.
Jeff
For what it's worth, I haven't had any problems with letting the
frozen veggie dogs thaw for several hours in the refrigerator, and
then seperating and freezing them seperately. Maybe I'm "living on
the edge" a bit, but so far so good!

Well, we eat Tofu Pups at my house, but I expect the packaging is similar.
Our secret: an icepick. First, use the icepick to rip open one side of the
package a bit. Then, give the dogs a little jab in between two of them. They
will come right apart. You can place the open bag in a Ziploc-type baggie, if
you plan on keeping them more than a few days, so the open dogs don't get
freezer burn.
I know some stores sell Tofu Pups refrigerated, but in my (smallish town)
natural food store, they are frozen, so I don't want to let them thaw more
than once. Since the SO takes them every day in his lunch, this has the added
bonus of keeping them cool if he can't get them in the refrigerator right
away.
Hope this works for you!

I run them under water until they come apart, then throw the ones I don't
use back in the freezer. It's never been a problem...
Personally, I prefer Tofu Pups, though...

So, what's everyone's opinion on the chik products? I was considering
picking up a box of nuggets next time.

I don't really like the Better Than Burgers burger things... They've got a
weird strong taste I can't identify, but it tastes... wrong.

They're not bad. They're probably as much like real chicken as, say,
McNuggets... They're nicely fibrous and while a bit dry, generally tasty.
The chik patties are a bit much for me, but the nuggets, with ketchup or
whatever sauce you prefer, make a good snack. The veggie buffalo winglet
things are enjoyably hot, and also make a good snack... (Or a meal if you're
an unhealthy vegetarian like myself. 8)
I tend to see fake meats as basically convenient shapes for food-- burgers
are good to cover with ketchup and onions and eat, tofu pups give you a good
vehicle for mustard and something to bring to the cookout, and veggie
luncheon "meats" make decent sandwiches and things to eat with crackers.
They fill the appropriate niches in the food groups. 8) The chik things work
quite well as what they're supposed to be.
I find the Green Giant veggie things to be NASTY, though, all grey and lumpy
and flavorless... Not worth the trouble.

Don't know about Phoenix, but in the metro Atlanta area, all the Kroger grocery
stores sell them in the produce department. They are also readily available at
all the local health food stores

Like em. Love em. Why the hell are they so expensive!

I did not like them at all. To me they have a really strange taste and
texture, and I've been surprised to see how many people have raved about
them. By all means, buy a box and try them for yourself. You may be one of
those who loves them. Just wait 'til they go on sale . . . ; - )

Well, yeah, they're kind of weird, but they taste good. Slather them with
ketchup or barbeque sauce and see if you like them. 8)
I eat all kinds of weird stuff, though, so my opinion may be slightly
biased...

<<Does anyone else LOVE the corndogs? Those have to be my FAVORITE convience
food! yum!>>
I loved these for a while as well, but ate them so often that I became tired of
them. Their taste is sooooo much better than that of meat corndogs. Of
course, I haven't had a meat corn dog in years, so I've probably forgotten
what they taste like.
Julia
Hmmm, I haven't seen these around Philly. I wonder if it's something
they just market regionally (down south)? I'd love to try them, when
I lived in Atlanta I used to eat corndogs all the time but I'm a
vegetarian now. Morningstar Farms seems to come up with good stuff
and I'm glad to see they've broken into the regular supermarket (I get
their stuff at Shop-Rite).

I have also seen corndogs by Loma Linda (another Worthington company, I think?)
as well around here (I live in the south as well). I seem to remember they
cost a couple of dollars more than the Morningstar Farms corndogs.
Julia
yeah, those companies are just different names for the same thing
(Worthington) as you can see on their website
http://www.morningstarfarms.com/
I'm going to write and see who may carry them above the Mason-Dixon
line. It just seems like the veggie corn-dogs are something they
target for the south and a "damn yankee" such as myself is left
dog-less! :-(
They aren't all that easy to find here in the south! Some stores have them,
some don't. I leave Publix very bummed out sometimes.

Try the buffalo chicken-like things... Tasty.
Isn't the bacon great? I can finally have BLTs again! I still haven't tried the
chicken, but I will next time I go to the store!

Yeah, the bacon is really amusing. It's nice to have the smells wafting
through the house, too... The one thing I've noticed is that when frying it
up in a pan ('cause it's just not breakfast if you don't slap it on a
griddle and go for it!) you have to be very careful with the heat, so you
don't burn it... It's easy to turn it black and... odd. The "sausage"
patties, similarly, if you overcook them become kind of nasty. They're nice
and tasty, though, if you do them just right. The breakfast links are much
more resilient when it comes to overcooking. They just get brown. It's
probably the casing that saves them...
When I'm feeling really gross, I'll fry up my fake sausages in a nice big
pat of butter. Then I can slap my bread or a bagel or whatever down in the
grease and fry it up good, too... Makes for a dubiously healthy breakfast.
I was born to be a fry cook, but these darn computers took me from my true
calling. 8)
