Does anyone know of decent substitute for Worcester Sauce? I'm a fairly
recently converted vege, but am finding it hard to resist using it in
cooking.

Thanks in advance.

Either Pick-A-Peppa Sauce or tamari/soy sauce will work. It depends on the
dish; PickAPeppa is kind of sweet + hot, so it may not substitute for
Worcestershire in all cases, & soy sauce is blander (well, i assume it
is... i cant remember what W. sauce tastes like anymore). Perhaps dark soy
would be closer? Anyway, experiment!

How about a touch of that tangy tamarind sauce that you get with
samosas sometimes? I think tamarind is part of what gives worcester
sauce its tang.
Reading the label here, I see vinegar and garlic and several varieties
of onion also. I've made a dipping sauce for peking rav's which is
equal parts soy and vinegar with some added garlic and optional
ginger. It's pretty tangy and quick to toss together ( wish I knew
another place to get vegetarian peking rav's ....sigh...)

Before I went vegi I used lots of worcester sauce (on almost everything
I ate), but gave it up when I found out about the anchovies (the only
problem ingredient in the brand I was using. Recently, however, I found an
"Organic, Vegetarian Worecester sauce (at Safeway of all places.) I have since
found it at a few health food stores. Although not quite up to the standard
of the stuff I used previously (from what I can remember at least - it seems
to have a rather more "garlicky" 8-) taste), it's better than nothing.

Now, moving off topic (sorry but I can't think of what newsgroup
to post this to), does anyone in the UK know of a source of "non-animal" (ie
plastic) shoes or boots (particularly Docs). The boots I'm wearing are
falling to bits, but I'm not happy with the prospect of buying some new
leather ones - any ideas?

There are several vegetarian brands of Worcester(shire) sauce available
here, in the larger supermarkets. Check the lables.

Here in Seattle, I buy a vegetarian Worcestershire sauce. The brand name is
Life, and on the label it says "trademark of St. Giles Foods Ltd., Kent, England.
Distributed by Liberty Richter, Inc., Carlstadt, N.J. 07072.

Here's the ingredients: Apple cider vinegar, onions, dried garlic, molasses,
extract of lemon, spices, and roast malt, tamarind essence (oxalate free).

I get it in the local food coop.

Our news server was down for a few days, and we lost a bunch of articles,
so I don't know exactly what's been posted in this thread, but, if
you're looking for vegan worcestershire sauce, Harvest Direct has a
fabulous one. Their phone number (for those in the US) is 1-800-
835-2867. Their address is Harvest Direct, P.O. Box 4514,
Decatur, IL 62525-4514. (In their latest catalog, it's $2.89 for
an 8 oz bottle).
