Hello! I just wanted to update folks on a bit of trivia, as I noticed a
recent thread on whether Hostess products contained animal fats. The
Hostess *light* cupcakes (not regular), at least here in Oregon,
contained only vegetable oils. I'm not sure, though, if they are vegan.
But, we all know better than to eat such junk so it's a moot point,
right? (Wink)

Animal fat aside, I've heard that some part of the sugar refining process uses
some type of bone meal or extract. I wish I could remember where this article
is. I'm looking for it now. Don't forget: when you think VEG, it's not just the
ingredients, it's the process you need to understand.

diet entirely and your in for a whole new headache-

Um.....not to mention that you can't be sure that they are *only*
vegetable oils. US labeling standards allow "vegetable shortening" to
have a certain percentage of animal fat as well; this is why shortening
is the biggest issue in kosher certification of baked goods. Unless
the ingredients clearly state 100% vegetable shortening (which still is
no guarantee, although if it's not true it's legally actionable), you
need to be wary. Also, even if the shortening is OK, vegans will of
course note that dairy and/or egg products are standard ingredients in
most pastries.

Am I the only person who runs and hides any time a package says "light"??For
one thing- if you cared, ya wouldn't be eating cupcakes, and for another- the
stuff they put in light food is quite nasty- usually a bunch of gums and
fillers and hydrogenated oils-

and cupcakes are so easy to make!

PS: The project is not necessarily about vegetarianism however as it is
a personal interest of mine I though this newsgroup would be a good place
to start.
