Hello. New reader to the group, long time vegetarian.

I've been told recently that the natural flavoring used in ketchep is in fact
pig's blood. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Cheers,

I read an article (I think it was in Vegetarian Times) about this...
The editors of the magazine contacted various ketchup producing companies
and verified that there is NOT pig's blood in ketchup.
I may be wrong, I'm merely quoting what I read a couple of months ago. (In
fact, please feel free to correct me if I AM wrong...)

Heinz ketchup is parve. This would imply that it doesn't actually include
pig's blood. I've never heard this before-- sounds like someone's trying to
gross you out...

The question "Is beef blood a natural flavoring in ketchup?" (I'm
paraphrasing) was addressed in the "Answering Machine" column of
the February 1999 issue of _Vegetarian Times_. The authors of the
column (Tracy Epp and Lee Riley) contacted H. J. Heinz and Hunt-
Wesson. Both assured the authors that beef blood (and, I'd assume,
pig's blood) is not used in ketchup. The spokesperson for H.J.
Heinz also stated that the natural flavorings in Heinz ketchup
are of non-animal origin--they're herbs and spices.

If you examine some recipes for ketchup, you'll see that typical
flavorings are mustard, cinnamon, cloves and allspice. For more
information on ketchup, you might try:

Parve or not, the mere fact that it's kosher is enough to clearly
exclude pig's blood on several levels.
I would agree that this is just one more groundless assertion designed
either to gross you out and/or to libel food manufacturers.

Pig's blood? Hogwash, most likely.
