I will be visiting the Oakland, Berkeley, San Francisco Area in March.
Can anyone help me with names of vegetarian, vegan restaurants?

it's hard to know where to start -- there are many good restaurants in the
area. Here are the names of specifically vegetarian and vegan restaurants
in SF/East Bay that I thought of off the top of my head.

SF:
*Lotus Garden -- Grant Street in Chinatown -_Chinese Food.
*Millenium -- Civic Center area -- haven't been there but heard wonderful
things about it.
*Now and Zen -- Japantown -- recently ate there for the first time and
found it quite good (we had breakfast); small, good atmosphere, a little
lacking in the service department
*Greens -- Fort Mason -- if you want a really nice, well-prepared meal,
this is the place to go. Looks right out onto the bay, and the food is
excellent. Not cheap, but well worth the money.
*Amazing Grace -- Church St.-- Upper Mission -- cafeteria style, decent
food, reasonable prices. Good salad bar.

East Bay:
*Vito -- University Ave., Berkeley. Excellent food, reasonable prices,
sketchy service but the food is worth it.
*Long Life Vegi House -- University Ave, Berkeley. Close to campus,
decent prices, excellent mushoo vegetables.
*Macrobiotic Cafe -- 40th, Oakland. Never been there but again hear
excellent things about it.

That's unfortunately all i can think of for now. there are so many good
restaurants in the area--granted, many aren't vegetarian as these are but
most better restaurants have a good deal of vegetarian choices. good luck
and enjoy yourself! dana p

To get you started, in SF:
Greens at Fort Mason - fabulous veg food, mostly w/dairy but some vegan, a
little pricey, beautiful view on the water
Millenium - also pricey, much vegan, little or no fat, nice place
The Ganges - Indian restaurant, inexpensive and veggie

Berkeley:
Atlas - just added chix and fish, but mostly veg
Great Wall - Chinese veggie and seafood
Long Life Veggie House - same kind of thing

There are MANY restaurants in this area that serve vegetarian dishes even
if they aren't veggie restaurants, and there are many more veggie
restaurants, too.

E-mail me when you're here or making plans if you want more ideas. Have
fun!

It is really easy to be vegetarian in SF, where you have a combination
of hippies, new agers, and fresh vegetables :). Virtually every
restaurant has a few vegetarian selections that are really good,
not mere afterthoughts. In fact, there's a Russian restaurant in
Berkeley, Petroshka, where half the menu is vegetarian. It's a little
tougher if you're vegan, but not impossible. In San Francisco, try
Ganges, an Indian restaurant on Frederick Street by Kezar Stadium or
Kan Zaman and Cafe Paradiso on Haight. There is a vegetarian Chinese
restaurant, The Golden Lotus on Grant in Chinatown, but it's all fake
meat which I find creepy but you might not. And, of, course, the city
is filled with great Italian restaurants!

You can also try Greens, a gourmet vegetarian restaurant in Fort Mason
by the Marina. It's heavy on the dairy, heavier in attitude, and
heaviest in price.

Bring a jacket, it's always cool in SF!

Hope you enjoy your trip. La Mediterranian (sp??) is very good, though
they also serve meat, they have a great veg. platter with spanakopita,
dolma, hummus, etc. They are on College Ave. in Berkeley, and also have 2
locations in SF. Long Life Vegi is a Chinese all-veg. place, haven't
eaten there. Vitto's on University is a new all-veg place. I ate there
once and had a horrible dining experience. Most places in Berkeley are
veg friendly, and have at least a couple veg dishes on the menu. You can
even get a veg burger at Burger King!

SF is also very veg friendly. There are lots of places to eat. Both
cities have a lot of ethnic restaurants that are good for vegs like
Indian, Chinese, Thai, etc.

Oakland is simlar, though I don't know too much about it.

Have a great trip!!!! E-mail me if you need more info.

Sorry to hear that. I've eaten at Vitto's twice, and had a good
experience both times. (The service was a bit slow, but the food was
quite good.) I plan to go back, and not just because I live two
blocks away from it.

The name has changed, though; it's now called Atlas. It's now no
longer all-vegetarian; the menu has a couple of meat dishes.

Folks who like vegetarian Chinese food, by the way, have lots of
choices; Long Life isn't the only vegetarian Chinese restaurant in
Berkeley.

Vitto seems to have changed owners. Based on an article (in the Express,
maybe? I've forgotten) it's got a new chef, and is now called Atlas.
Haven't been there since it changed, so can't provide a review.

Here's my list of Vegetarian Info for the Bay Area. Probably the best
maintained place to look is the web pages for vegetarian restaurants -

RESTAURANT LISTS / TRAVEL GUIDES
1. Vegetarian Times magazine has an excellent listing of all veg (vegan/
vegetarian) restaurants / organizations / retreats in USA & Canada. You can
probably order reprints from: Vegetarian Times Bookshelf,
P.O. Box 446 ; Mt. Morris, IL. 61054 (312)848-8100.
They do this every year, or every-other year. Last was August 1989 issue.
Send updated info to them for inclusion in next release. They didn't publish
list in V.T. Magazine in summer 1990, probably because they don't want to cut
into their sales for their $9.95 "Guide to Natural Food Restaurants in the
U.S. and Canada", 1990 edition (which I suggest you order from the American
Vegan Society, so they get the commission).

2. The Vegetarian Society of the U.K. (VSUK) publishes the "International
Vegetarian Travel Guide", which concentrates on Veg. Restaurants & guesthousts
in England & Europe, listing establishments for each city in every country.
Phone & order the 1992 guide. It about 4 pounds, and you can put it on
your Mastercard or Visa. Using a credit card avoids you the conversion problem
& international money order charge (most banks charge FIVE dollars!). ATTENTION:
from the USA, be SURE to specify AIR-MAIL, or it'll take two months by ship.
The International Vegetarian Travel Guide
"Lists hundreds of places to eat out & stayover!" about 4 pounds
The Vegetarian Handbook
"The guide to living a vegetarian lifestyle!" about 3 pounds
Also, you can become a member of VSUK via phone, and then you'd receive
their [great] magazine called , surprisingly enuf, "The Vegetarian" and the
Vegetarian Handbook. They also have a children's quarterly magazine.
I think the magazine is 10 pounds. With membership 16 pounds. Airmail
delivery is 10 pounds additional.
VSUK; Parkdale, Dunham Road; Altrincham, Cheshire WA14 4QG; ENGLAND
Telephone: (061)928-0793 [for USA dialers, the country code is 44, so to
direct-dial most of us would dial: 011 44 61 928-0793 ]
Remark: If you do travel about, the VSUK solicits your help: if you
have any additions/changes to info. in the Handbook, send it in to them.

3. "The Vegan Holiday & Restaurant Guide" (mostly England,Scotland,Wales) by:
The Vegan Society, Ltd.; 33-35 George Street; Oxford, OX1 2AY; ENGLAND
Tel. 0865 722166 They also publish the good quarterly magazine "The Vegan"

Staff of Life Deli - cheap, all vegetarian food freshly prepared. Water Street.
Saturn Cafe - soups, salads, quiche, ratatouille, wonderfully sinful chocolate
desserts (try the Chocolate Madness). Student crowd.
Whole Earth Restaurant - UCSC campus near the Bay Tree Bookstore. Good, fairly
cheap student fare.
In Santa Cruz, try the chai! It's a spiced Indian tea available at most health
food restaurants.

There is a great new vegetarian restaurant in San Jose. It is called
"White Lotus Vegetarian Restaurant" and is at 80 N. Market street. While
there are many "meat" dishes on the menu--identified as beef, chicken, etc.--
our waiter claimed everything was vegetarian. He said, and I quote,
"it all tofu." Anyway, it was deeeee-licious and *cheap* (c. $4/entree).
Highly recommended and followup comments appreciated.

Last week, I had been to a new vegetarian "White Lotus" on 80 (?),
N. Market Street. It had a wide selection of dishes and the prices
were reasonable. Ambiance is pleasant and airy and the service is
friendly. It is between St. John's and Santa Clara Street.
We tried crispy chowmien, stuffed tofu, vermicilli curry, coffee with ice,
Liked them all. Especially the crispy chowmien and the coffee.

You might like to include the Royal Taj chain of Indian Restaurants.
They have a nice buffet, and it's easy to get a lacto meal there.
Re: Santa Cruz Restaurants
>Indian Summer - juice bar/macrobiotic rest. behind Community Foods, Soquel Ave
Indian Summer is closing down 6/24 *SIGH* It was definitely one of the better,
cheaper places to get a good veggie meal. They will still do wholesale through
various stores in the Santa Cruz and Bay Area, and they hope to re-open soon,
but apparently their current location is too small to maintain the restaurant.
>Whole Earth Restaurant - UCSC campus near the Bay Tree Bookstore.
Whole Earth's grill is back in operation! that means some of the best pancakes
are once again available! And the great vegan muffins are still there.

I wonder if you want to add resorts, if so here are 3 that do mainly veg food.
Harbin Hot Springs, Esalen Institute, Mt Madona Center ... [text deleted]
[Ed. Note: I listed these resorts, using his descriptions, and added some
others. Thanks for the idea of the "Health/Resorts" section.]
New veg restaurants for your list:
Half Moon Bay: Cosmic Charlies 510 Kelley St. one half block off of Highway
one on the south end of town, at the corner of the Cheap gas station.
Davenport: Davenport Cash Store, Highway 1 426-4122 7:30 am - 9 pm, daily.

I sent you e-mail recently, about a new vegetarian "restaurant" Govinda's
in Berkeley. I called them, and they are indeed in the Berkeley Hare
Krishna temple. I was told that they are not a restaurant; presumably
visitors eat with the residents. They request a $4 donation for lunch, $5
for dinner, $3 for salad bar, so the prices are fairly low.

A copy of your veg restaurant guide was posted, with a reference to the Blue

are awfully fond of expensive salads, you can't get a decent meal there, not
that they will tell you that over the phone. They now serve high price
continental style omnivore food. Grump. [Ed. note; I deleted from list]

It appears to be primarily a bar, and it is not vegetarian. The menu lists
things like "Cajun Ham" and other meat dishes; earlier menus listed seafood

I don't know if this is relevant to VINFO, but the Dahlak Eritrean/Ethiopian
restaurant in Sunnyvale, one of my favorites, is closing down sometime within
a year. I haven't called them yet to find the final date. But the closing is
not due to lack of business; it's due to the end of conflict in Ethiopia. The
owners are returning to the homeland. That's good for them, but sad for us.
[Will close on 10/3/92].

RE: Dagwood's Eatery, Palo Alto & Anna's Restaurant, Berkeley
Dagwood's is indeed something of a sandwich shop. They have a salad
bar, a sandwich bar (sold by the ounce, I believe; you can make a vegetarian
sandwich). They also have some mid-eastern food: felafel, dolmas, and
a rice-and-lentil plate. There may be other things; I've only been twice.
Anna's is more expensive and also more refined. I had an excellent
vegetable curry with jasmine rice. Another time I had a salad combo,
with cheese tortellini, spinach, and I think some pasta-and-chickpea
salad. They also have a spinach salad with feta cheese. There may be
other vegetarian dishes as well; again I've only gone twice. I think they
might always carry one or two vegetarian soups as well; once when I was
there they had a black bean soup. They also have good breadsticks.
It seems that both Dagwood's and Anna's have food for vegans.
Anna's vegetable curry seemed vegan, and possibly their soups as well.
Probably Dagwood's middle eastern food is vegan, if you ask them to skip
the yogurt. I didn't question the staff closely, however, so I won't
swear by it. If you're vegan you could call Anna's and ask them; if it's
acceptable, I recommend the place. -- Michele Coleman

Cosmic Charlie's in Half Moon Bay closed a few months ago (late Oct to
early Nov) due to a messy divorce. Word is that it could have survived if
people hadn't gotten nasty with each other (life in a small town, everyone
finds out the dirt). On the other hand Healing Moon Health Food Store on
Main St has a veggie deli (does that make any sense and a nice garden to
eat in out back).
For some veggie selections there are lots of places, at least for
ovo-lacto. Tres Amigos Taqueria on 1 at Kelly (1/2 block west of the
defunct Cosmic Charlie's) has a good veggie burrito and has cheese
quesadillas. Not much, but we like it and it is good and cheap. Pasta
Moon should probably make the list (on Main St in the Tin Palace) too.
Great food. Some dishes are ovo-lacto or probably just lacto (I'll check
next time we decide to blow some bucks and get back to you.).
Dagwood's in Palo Alto is also gone. Perhaps substitute Liddicoats on
University Av which is a cluster of food counters including a few that have
felafel and one that has Indian food including veggie (also serves meat)
that was quite filling last night. -- Andy

In Berkeley, Govinda's Vegetarian Buffet has apparently closed. On
another subject, in an old e-mail, you asked what is the best vegan
restaurant in Berkeley. The only worthwhile vegan restaurant in Berkeley
proper is Vegi Food. However, you have to order carefully there -- some of
the dishes can be really greasy; examples: their "spiced eggplant" should
be called "greased eggplant"; also avoid the bok choy with fungus -- *very
greasy. A few dishes -- mixed vegetables, green beansin black bean sauce
can be steamed instead of fried. ... (Vegi Food does not use onions/garlic
in their food). -- Tom Billings, t...@stat.Berkeley.EDU

[in a posting to rec.food.veg]: You need to add Nomee's Silver Spoon
Restaurant in Sunnyvale. They have the BEST falafels I've ever tasted;
the recipe was brought from Israel by the original owners. The falafels
are vegan, as are their french fries (both are cooked in vegetable oil
that is used to cook no other food). People I've told about the place keep
going back. ... Also, the Awful Falafel place you have listed under San
Jose is not really vegetarian. They cook their falafels in the same oil
they use for their meat - UGH!

I think this also goes by the name "Supreme Master Ching-Hai". It is a
religious center as well as a restaurant. The food was great, and the
place is highly recommneded; be aware, however, that you will be bombarded
with a loud video of the supreme master talking about her view of the
universe during the course of your meal.

My wife and I had one of the best vegetarian meals at a place called
Greens near the army post on San Francisco Bay. If this has already been
mentioned, I apologize. But the food and atmosphere were
great.
