How about "Howdy Beef 'n' Burger"? They had a burger that was
grotesquely large... something like a foot across. Really weird.
"Jim Dandy Chicken"? I think there may be one or two still around in
the Northeast.
"Arthur Treacher's" - I think some still exist in the midwest - but
most of the locations in New England became "Scooby's" for about a
decade before they folded.
"Zum Zum" - it seemed like there was one on every corner in Manhattan
in the 1070's...
"Abdow's Big Boy" - now mostly Bickford's Pancake Houses.
"Ruggle's" - they served "British cheddar cheese pizza". Ew.
"Little Tavern" - D.C.-area White Castle-type chain.
Any others?

It was Howdy Beef Burgers - division of Dunkin Donuts. I don't recall
any large burgers, having worked at two locations during my college
years.

Newport Creamery is a distinct possibility. They're down to 12
locations after Robert Swain of FL and his wife started bleeding the
company dry (reportedly taking over $1.5M out for personal use in the

Sambo's--that may be the Denny's of today.
There were two McDonald's start-ups that went under: Raymonds (Oak Street
Chicago and Rodeo Drive Beverly Hills) an upscale McDonald's named for Ray Kroc
who was always bothered that it was called McD's and not Krocs, and Jane
Dobbins named after one of Ray Kroc's wives which was renamed the Pie Tree
after the divorce.
Gino's Hamburger's in the Philadelphia - Baltimore - DC area and their sister
company Rustler Steak House.
The Dog House, a chain of Hot dog places in the Midwest.
Mariott's fast food operation the Hot Shoppes and Hot Shoppe Jr.s which I think
are now mostly Roy Rogers.
Dewey's here in Philadelphia - greatly missed.
Spud Nuts - Potato flour donuts
Shakee's Pizza, though there may be a few independents left.
That's enough for now.

Which were all bought by McD's about 5 years ago. There are a few Roy Rogers
left in the DC area (and other places, I believe), but those are independently

"Big Boy" as I remember has the franchise owner as the first name
of the store. As a very little kid back in Cleveland I remember a
Fricher's Big Boy, I'm talking around 1969 then nothing for a long
time (a Burger King opened up at Dover Center and Lorain Road, next to
the old Lums). At some time before I moved south a Bob's Big Boy
opened up in Cleveland, never gave it a try.
Anyone remember Bif Burger? I know there was atleast one in the
Columbus, Ohio area in the late 1960s (dejavu). There is only one
left: If you're in the Tampa Bay area (St. Pete) take I-275 to the
38th Ave. North exit. Go west to 49th Street and go North about 400
feet and take a right. Go if the weather is good, they have a nice
covered outside eating area with a beer and wine bar and great burgers
(taste before you add salt to anything).

Hadn't thought of Lum's in years. We used to go to the one in Horseheads,
NY--not far from where I grew up in PA.
Yes, Mrs. Swain appears to be the Imelda Marcos of Rhode Island...
I remember a great cafeteria chain called "Morrison's".
There was a hotdog chain called "Pup and Taco" and another called
"Weinerking".
A hamburger outfit called "Jack's" not to be confused with Jack-In-The-Box.
Steak outfit called "Western Sizzlin" and another called "Bonanza".
Fried chicken outfits..."Minnie Pearl's", "Marshall Durbins", "Bojangles".

Still around in the Southeast. At least earlier this year I ate at
one in Athens, GA.

Bonanza and Ponderosa merged in 1997, according to

Bojangles is also still kicking, at least in Kentucky and Beaufort,

What about Jack in the Box (wasn't that Rodney Allen Rippey's gig)?
Was Kemps a chain?
Yeah, I see them all the time in Canada. And they are still around
some places in the US. Iron River, Wisconsin, and Birmingham, AL, for
example.

They are still all over the place in the Southwest.

The only Kemps I've known is an ice cream brand in the upper midwest.

Didn't they finally belly up in the late 80s? I remember them as
Pittsburgh's version of a White Castle.
There is one in Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, Ill, and while driving to
the Chicago area 4 years ago from Alaska found them everywhere coming
through western Canada including one city where there were stores on
each side of the road across from each other.
Ditto for the Triad (Greensboro, High Point, Winston-Salem) area of

One independent and several chain owned inside gas stations here in
the Bremerton area.

Still around, at least four here.
I think when they opened it was about 1964......(Guessing)......If memory
serves correct they had 5 hamburgers for a buck.....and the greatest burger
THE......"Big Wink".....close but better than a Big-Boy.
Only thing bad was that the rumors of cheap labor altering the food (use
your imagination) for people that bitched or people the cooks didn't
like......It was true, I knew a few of the employees....
But all in all it was the neatest thing to a kid growing up in the area!!!!

Stopped at a Hojo off I-81 in mid VA last year (Staunton?). They still

Yup, I liked Roy Rogers, it had a little variety, burgers, chicken,
roast beef.
They closed 3 of them around the Peekskill, Fishkill & Wappinger Falls
area of NY.
I miss them, too bad.

They just opened a new one in Seligman, AZ off I40.
It's a convenience store and a gas station also.

Wasn't that a Beefsteak Charlie's that had a
restaurant with small tables (in Forest Hills, Queens, NY),
the waiters could hardly fit the food on the table?
If that's the same one, I felt very uncomfortable since
there was hardly any room to eat, but the food was
good.
I know it's off topic, but there's a good mom & pop German restaurant off
I-81 near (Staunton?) at exit 213 best I remember. We always try and time
our travel time so we can stop and eat there whenever we pass thru.

A&W and Jack in the Box are both operating locations in the
Northwest.
The A&W in my location, visited shortly after it opened a couple of
years ago, was a disappointment. Food and drinks were mediocre and
there was an overwhelming cheapness about the place. By comparison,
the McDonald's experience is a gourmet adventure in deluxe
surroundings.
Jack in the Box has some OK items and their places are average. I
give the outfit hanging-in-there points for having survived the E-
coli debacle of a few years ago.

Arthur Treacher's is owned by the same people who own the Nathan's Hot
Dogs and Kenny Rogers chains. Their modus oporandi seems to be to close
restaurants. There's still an Arthur Treacher's in the Gallery in Center
City Philadelphia ... or at least there was the last time I was there
about two months ago. An Arthur Treachers was recently closed in the Cherry
Hill Mall food court, but now, the Nathan's Hot Dogs outlet in the
Moorestown Mall food court now has a limited Arthur Treacher's menu.
Some hot dog and milk shake shops that got urban renewalized into oblivion. I

My apologies, the combo ones were in the Detroit area (after a
gazillion interviewing trips this last winter and spring, sometimes
things run together). But Church's are definitely in Arizona and
Texas.
I thought their flagship/original restaurant was in Newton, MA.
I remember going to the one in Hartford, CT when we were broke

meal for ~$8.00 IIRC, and the lobsters were quite good. (There

There used to be a fast food seafood chain that had a number of outlets here

We still have a few of them in the Chicago area.
I live a brief walk from Route 130, but I do not remember Millside

Millside Farms was a working dairy farm that had a resturant associated with

This was back in the 1950's early 60's.
We still have them in Houston also.

There is a good place in Okeechobee, can't remember the name of it,
