My students are studing a novel called Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli.
It is set in Pennsylvania. We are stumped by two items of food that are
mentioned in the book. Can anyone tell us what Krimpets and zep are?

Krimpets and zeps are pastries. Zeps are little balls of dough around the
size of hush puppies that are deep fried and sprinkled with fine sugar.

Krimpets are little cakes about 1" wide by about 3" long by about 1 " high.
They're filled with grape or other jelly. The local (to Philadelphia) company
called TastyKake makes jelly krimpets that are absolutely fantastic tasting.

Krimpets are Tasty Kakes Krimpets (jelly is the best). Tasty Kake makes
hostess look (and taste) like cardboard. Well they would taste like
cardboard regardless. I grew up in Philly and don't have the foggiest
idea what zep is.

Hi. Krimpets are a butterscotch-flavored snack cake
made by TastyKakes (a Phila.-based wholesale bakery,
kind of like Hostess or Drakes). I loved them as
a kid! Not sure about the zep reference, maybe
it refers to zeppoli (sp?), an italian version
of funnel cake, which is fried dough with powdered
sugar sprinkled on it. They're big at carnivals
and on the boardwalk at the Jersey Shore.

Tastycake Krimpets also come in jelly. Both jelly and butterscotch are
delicious. But the most delicious Tastycakes are the pies (too many
varieties to list -- French Apple, with icing and many raisins is an
all-time favorite) and the cupcakes -- chocolate and chocolate with creme
filling.
