I know this is a long shot - but is there anything worthwhile within a short
(10-15 minute) drive of LAX. I'll be there for one night next month, just
passing through, and I prefer to get out of the hotel for dinner. I`m open
to any kind of cuisine, as long as the food does not have a high fat content.

About 15 minutes south is one of the very best restaurants
in LA, St. Estephe. North, within 15 minutes is Marina del
Rey. While not known for great restaurants, there's a lot
going on. Also, just north of MDR is Venice, with lots
of interesting places, some very trendy, some more neighborhood
places. Better known places include West Beach Cafe,
Rebeccas, Joe's Place (I think it's called), Rockenwagner,
Hama Sushi, and on and on. Right around LAX is a disaster,
but certainly you'll find something reasonable north or
south. Don't go east or west :)

To the north, you can go to Marina Del Rey (Cafe Del Rey, Angeli Mare) or
to the south to Manhattan Beach (Cafe Pierre, Sunsets, Mango's).

Those are within 15 minutes of driving from LAX. You may also find something
in Westchester (just north of the airport) but I can't recommend anything...

A rebuttal on St Este`phe -- (if that *is* John Sedlar's place in
Manhattan Bch) -- Epitomizes all that's wrong with "nouvelle" chi-chi
cuisine. In the words of Jeremiah Tower, "Do I eat it, or snort it?"
Overly precious, ill-conceived combinations that look better than they are.

Rebecca's and West Beach Cafe win high marks for good and informal food.

Michael's in Santa Monica is head and shoulders above StEs.

A *VERY* good place in Marina Del Rey on Washington Blvd. (less than 15
min. away) is KILLER SHRIMP. They serve (I think) only one item: A
huge bowl of
jumbo shrimp in an excellent spicy (I think cajun) sauce. You can get
it with rice, noodles and, my favorite, french bread (all you can
handle). There's plenty of sauce (it's almost like a soup) left over
for you to enjoy dipping the bread into until the bowl is clean. :)
yum, yum. One of my favorite restaurants around.

BTW, I am especially pumped on this restaurant right now, since I'm
going there tonite in about an hour!! :) :) :)

Good luck,

Andrew

BTW, any Angelenos out there, you HAVE to try this place. Oh, a word of
warning, you may have to wait on the weekends and (this is important)
they DON'T ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS, cash ONLY. So, don't get caught on a
date without cash. :)

How about Lana Thai (Thai food) in Westchester? I think it's at the
intersection of Manchester and some other major street...I also like
Rosalyns Thai restaurant in Venice on Lincoln - but that's probably a
15 min drive...

Devout St. Estephe lover here (no flames, please...it's been a really rough
week! I KNOW it's Monday...this is a continuation from last week!)

If you don't want "stuffy" Southwestern but like the same general area, I
second Cafe Pierre. Also, there's Orville and Wilbur's (with a view of the
ocean...on Rosecrans west of Sepulveda), and Sausolito South (on Sepulveda
between Rosecrans and Marine) for seafood and jazz.

Although, if you are driving from the airport around normal quitting time,
it won't be 15 minutes...more like 35!
