Here is the traditional recipe and it is GREAT. I think the mace is the
secret. -Arielle

MORAVIAN LOVEFEAST BUNS

(recipe by Brother Christian Winkler- this recipe dates to the Moravian
settlers of North Carolina.)

Makes about 30 buns

Dissolve for 5 minutes:
2 packages yeast
in 1/2 cup warm water

Cream together:
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
Add and mix in well:
1 cup hot, dry mashed potatoes, unseasoned
Add in 1/2 cup lukewarm milk (scald milk, then let it cool a little)
Add in, mixing well: 2 eggs, lightly beaten
Add in the dissolved yeast mixture

Combine spices well:
1/4 tsp. Nutmeg
2 Tbs. Orange rind
2 Tbs. Lemon rind
2 Tbs. Orange juice
1 Tbs. Fresh Lemon juice
1/2 tsp. Mace

Mix spices into the yeast mixture.
Add in enough flour to make a soft dough: about 1-1/2 pounds

Knead dough on well floured table. Form into ball and place in greased
bowl. Cover with cloth and let rise in warm place until double in size
(about 2 hours). Pinch down; let rise again 5-10 minutes. Flouring hands
well (dough will be sticky), form dough into small (3 0z) balls. Place
on cookie sheet. Slash tops with razor blade to release air. Cover and
let rise again till double in size. Bake at 350 degrees until golden all
over (about 15-20 minutes).
