The only danger of the ring being too tight when the jar cools, Moose, is
that it'll be tougher to remove for storage. Yeah, sometimes you'll see a
recommendation to remove the rings from the jars after about 24 hours.
That's so the sealed lid will lift more easily if your canning process was
kerflooey and you've got active life forms within the jar.
FWIW, I store my stuff with the rings on. And I know ezzackly what you're
talking about with the loose ring after processing. Never thought much
about why it happens. Don't much care as long as the lid is sealed.

We be jammin'. "Can't Be" Beet Jelly done. I am done with the Fair stuff.....entries to be delivered this week. Peach-Apricot Honey on the stove right now, 8/13/00. And I caught it before it scorched....close call. I should move this machine to the kitchen.
The Cousins are here in 8 days! Eeeeekk!! OHMIGOD! I have major cleaning/pitching to do. Pray for me.
If the ring is loose when it comes out of the canner just leave it alone, if
you start to tihgten it you can damage the seal and end up with a bad jar.
The ring is there to keep the lid from floating off when you put in the
canner.
