Went to a Master Gardener's pot-luck supper this past Sun. and tried some
for the first time. They were regular sized slices with a Sweet Gherkin
flavor. There was a very nice, well defined snap in the chew not matter
whether you bit an edge or the middle. I liked them. Just wanted to say I'm
gonna give some a try next season.

I have used alum (aluminum potassium sulfate) before, but don't really like
eating more aluminum than the minimum.

I've made pickles for years with pickling lime. A few years ago I
switched to calcium chloride and have a good results with that and the
same snap throughout the pickle. Calcium chloride is easier to work with
than pickling lime in my opinion.

Here's where I got my last shipment of calcium chloride:

sometime in the recent past George Shirley posted this:
I know the subject of lime has come up here often before and it's readily
available in our local big box grocer, Hannaford's. I've either forgotten
about calcium chloride or wasn't paying attention, but I'll have to check it
out. Thanks, George.

When y'all go to use the lime, be sure to rinse it out well as the
directions say. Taste'em, then rinse again. That wierd bitterness will not
get better as they age, to my regret.

Pickle Crisp, calcium chloride, the only way to go instead of pickling
lime.
