Anybody have any clues on this? I have a friend (no comments, please
Barb S.) who is a Mountain Dew FIEND! I thought it'd be a hoot to
make up a batch of mountain dew jelly. How do I determine how much
water, sugar & acid is in this stuff? Then, how do I determine how
much pectin? I thought about reducing the Dew about 50%, adding some
lemon juice, sugar (if necessary?) and pectin.

For that matter, how about any soda pop jellies? Cola might be
interesting, too.

Thanks,
...jerry <><

You have to do this in a roundabout way for DEW and just about anything else.

You will need a 3 scale hydrometer - used in winemaking.
Citric acid - get it at a winemaking store. Substitute fresh filtered lemon
juice - NEVER use that fake lemon liquid sold in stores - it is bitter.

Take quart bottle of Dew and let it go flat - absolutely flat.
Pour the Dew into a deep but narrow container and slip in the hydrometer.
Measure on the % sugar scale. 15% is considered to be the sweetness of natural
juices. Weigh sugar, note, add, stir fully, test to get to 15%, very carefully
measure the citric acid required to balance the taste. Work that formula up to
the volume of "DEW juice" you need per jelly recipe I suggest to use a peach
jelly recipe to arrive at sugar and pectin for jelling. Process as per the
recipe - usually BWB 5 mins.

Suggest you use a lo-sugar pectin.
Use no more than 6 to 8 cups juice per jelly recipe to make sure no darkening or
loss of flavour occurs. Long slow boiling destroys the pectin.

Don't forget to record precisely what you do so you have the recipe to post
here :-)))

I just might do some of that type jelly as soon as I find something makes my
mouth drool 'er water.

Now that you mention it Phil's sister has a real fondness for Koo-Aid. It would
make a real fun joke to give her kids ( all grown up now of course) at Christmas.

More weird:

Pop some gummi bears in to see young adults revert to childlike joy.

Been there, done that. Mine uses Raspberry Kool-Aid mix. It's awfully pretty.
