I bought 2 of them at Lowe's. One to use and the other to save. Maybe
to use when I can't put my hands on the other one.

BTW, Lowe's had a display of some BWBs, jars and lids. I need to
check the prices at my local grocery store. I will probably keep
buying at the grocery since they keep canning supplies year around.

How new? I bought the "new" one a couple of yours ago. Please tell me
they're not publishing one every year and calling the advice in the
previous one obsolete and dangerous!

Interesting. I wonder if they've discontinued the 4-ounce jars. I've
written and asked because they're not listed.

Will have to check out the book. Thanks for the news!

Do you buy Kerr or Ball, Susan? I've got a bunch of Ball coupons for
cases of jars.

They still have the 4 ounce jars -- listed with jelly jars. My bad.

You found them at Lowe's? Are we talking Lowe's as in www.lowes.com or the
Lowes food stores, http://www.lowesfoods.com/?

I've never known those huge "home improvement" stores like that to carry any
sort of canning supplies. Smaller hardware chains like Ace and Do It Best
always seem to have canning supplies year round, not always the best price,
but if you run out, you know where you can find supplies.

I bought my new copy of the Ball Blue Book at Walmart. They kind of had it
hidden, as the copies were in a box that was turned on its side...and on the
top shelf, no less. When you're only 5'2" like me, you don't always look at
the top shelf because you have a heck of a time getting stuff down from
there.

I didn't see any significant changes in the basic canning methods from the
last edition.

I don't know about the BBB but I know that Menards (another home
improvement store) in the midwest currently has pint jars on sale this
week, I think they came to $3.99 per doz after rebate.

I have never seen canning supplies in Lowe's (not food) stores before
either. They were sitting in a prominent place near where the seeds
were earlier. Since the DH was buying nails, I went to the other end
of the store to look around and saw it. I think the display set up
was from Ball.

Now we are in the boonies, but the Lowe's headquarters are about 30
miles from here.

I did a quick glance through it yesterday and it looks much like the
previous one. I have not actually read it but some of the pictures
are new. Guess I should compare it with the 1999 and 2003 versions I
have.

Wow! Wish we had a store like that here, Golden Harvest at Big Lots are
$6.49 a dozen and a bargain over Kroger and Walmart for Ball jars.

Does anybody know, are the recipes in the BBB the same as in the Ball
Book of Complete Home Preserving? Anybody? I'm sure somebody in here
knows ;)

I got the USDA Complete Home Canning and Preserving guide and finally,
a copy of Small Batch Preserving. Boy I love that book, you should see
the drop dead gorgeous sweet pepper relish I put up last night.

A quick look at a couple sections (salsa, chutney) shows that the big
Ball book (the one that's 1-1/4" thick) has the recipes from the BBB and
many more. E.g., the BBB has 7 salsa recipes; the big Ball book (jeez,
they could both be known as BBBs. . . ) has 14. I don't know if that's
true for every category, but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it is.

One of the chutney recipes has a different name in each book.

FWIW.

I'm interested in a pepper relish recipe. Can you post a picture to
tinypics or the like? Is is the one they call Green and Red Pepper
Relish?

I'm tempted to make their B**t Relish with Horseradish, just for laughs.

If you need some, grab them. Most stores carry them for ~$10 a dozen.

Yes I made the Green and Red Pepper relish. Only I used Orange Yellow
and Red peppers. The green ones I got were nasty on the inside what a
bad surprise.

B**ts are one of my most favorite foods, ever.

Is that the Complete Book of Small Batch Preserving by Ellie Topp and
Margaret Howard?
Lots of great recipes in there. Also a bit of a lesson learned ;-).
When their first book, Put A Lid On It came out we bought it for
somewhat over CND $20.00. Then their second one, More Put A Lid On It
came out and we bought it also, again over CND $20.00.
A year or so later, The Complete Book of Small Batch Preserving came
out and we also bought it but, it was only about CND $16.00. Then we
discovered that the last one was a compilation of the recipes from the
first two. Hard to fathom, two books at well over CND $40.00 total, or
one book with all the recipes for about $16.00.

Is there anyone who can tell me how many editions of the blue book there are? Do they put out a new one every year, every other year or what? Thank you.

As far as I know there has been a new edition put out about every two to
three years since 1909. I have six different editions in my preserving
library and, yes, the recipes have changed over the years. Recently Ball
(Jardin) has been putting things like "Ball Salt" in the recipes versus
"pickling salt." Certain other sly changes have been made to advertise
their additives like "pickling spices" in many recipes is now "Ball
pickling spices." Most of the modern books, ie. last twenty years, are
still very good and, if you follow the recipes really closely at least
none of your family will die of botulism.
