According to Putting Food By, if you want them whole and unsweetened, to
protect their color cover them with water in which 1 teaspoon
crystalline ascorbic acid per quart of water has been dissolved. Leave
appropriate headroom, seal and freeze.
The notes say to choose slightly tart firm berries with solid red
centers. Slice or crush very large ones. Sweetened strawberries keep
better than unsweetened.

I don't know about best -- but I'd be inclined to freeze them so they're
recipe ready. I slice strawberries for shortcake in the food processor
and put them into heat-seal bags into which I've put a bit of sugar.
I've got a few bags in the freezer that are ready to be made into jam.
I'll check their labels to see if I've added sugar to them or not. HTH.

I wash them gently, remove the hulls, and spread them out on cookie sheets.
When they're frozen I pick them off the cookie sheets and drop them into
Ziplock bags. That way I can use as few or as many as I want at any given
time.

Hi Lee,
I find that the best strawberries for freezing are the ones that don't
need washing. i.e. if it hasn't rained for 3 days, there is no
"splash" on the berries.
Pick through them and hull with a sharp blade. Pulling off the stem
bruises the berry. Spread them out on a tray and freeze.
I pack in sandwich bags. They last for months this way.
