Gee, I hate to clutter the newsgroup with a request for information
about something so plebian as a coffeemaker <g>, but our 10+ year old
Braun seems to be on its way out, and we need a replacement! What would
all of you recommend, and why? (We grind our coffee ourselves each
morning; don't need one of those machines that does that too! And we
like it strong!)

Thanks so much!

I never drink coffee at home and rarely do at work. My wife is the coffee
maven at home and she loves the Bunn. It is fast as the water is hot and
ready to go, just pour in a container and the brewing is started. Fastest
pot around.

At work we have used many brands. These are typical home units that are on
12 to 16 hours a day. Some of the Mr. Coffee 12 cup models have a carafe
that spills when you pour. It is terrible until you get it down to 8 cups.
Everyone hated it, but the carafe still lives on in current models. A
Proctor Silex lasted about 3 years of heavy use. Right now we have a $19
Black and Decker that is OK also.

Unless you like the features of the Bunn or need the programmable nonsense,
you can make fairly decent coffee for under 20 bucks.

Sue,

Here is a web site http://www.toddyproducts.com/coffeemaker.html it is a
cold water process that makes excellent coffee. It creates like a coffee
extract so you can make the coffee as strong as you like.

Hope this helps

We have an automatic Braun 12 cup & are quite happy with it. We have
had several differnt brands & none has held up or performed as well as
the Braun.

Though I like to have fun with an old Silex Vac pot on the weekends,
give me my Braun on a work day.

I used Braun machines for years until I tried a Bodum French-style press
coffee makers. I think it makes the best-tasting coffee, is simple to use
and cleans up quickly. I'd forget the machines.

I love our Bunn... Fast! If you get one, warn guests before they try
to make coffee. If you use the pot to pour the water in the top, it
will start coming out before you are done pouring. It comes with a
plastic container for pouring the water. I've had several people do
that at my house. It's especially nice in the morning or if you are
in a rush. Full pot of coffee in about a minute or so.

Cheers!

I agree. We recently bought a Bunn thinking it would be more convenient, but
it doesn't make as good a cup of coffee as a French Press. We're still
experimenting & found if we increase the amount of coffee in the Bunn, it's
better. So we are now using almost twice as much coffee. We like strong
coffee & the press may be back in action soon.

Hmm ... I've been using a Bodum and have tired of cleaning relatively
intricate parts. Maybe I just need a bigger french press. But I also don't
like the "silt" at the bottom of the cup. I'd rather brew half a pot in my
Krups (which has been gracing my countertop for 16 years now). "Your
mileage may vary." :-)

The Bunn is great if you make a pot or more a day. If it sits unused for
a few days, some of the water that's kept hot inside evaporates and you
won't get a full pot on your next brew. Unfortunately, we don't drink
that much coffee, so the Bunn wasn't our best choice although it does
make great coffee.

We now have a Cuisinart which makes great coffee. There's a version that
grinds, too, although you mentioned you didn't need that.

Tip for Cuisinart users: the "Grind 'n Brew" has a gold mesh filter that
eliminates the need for paper filters. It also fits perfectly in the
regular maker, but isn't listed anywhere as an accessory. If you call
Cuisinart parts, you can order it for about $12 + shipping. Highly
recommended.
