Trying to decide between a gas cooktop from Thermodor vs. one from Viking.
Besides that fact that the ventilation costs more than the cooktop, does
anyone have any experience with either or both of these?

Thanks,

Steven

I have heard from an unreliable source (a salesman) that Viking
cooktops are not as good as their ranges. Also, if it matters to you,
the Thermador has a sealed burner while the Viking does not. Viking
does have a pull out drip tray that you can put in the dishwasher.
However, there is a possiblity of stuff dripping onto the gas piping
that is between the drip tray and the burner. But then maybe you never
boil anything over. In that case, it probably doesn't matter.

I just bought a Dacor range (haven't got it yet), having tossed out
both Thermador and Viking for various nit-picky reasons. It looks to
me that all these are comparable appliances with various minor
differences. You'll probably be happy with whichever you get.

We have ahd the Thermador 48" cooktop, 54" hood and remote ventilator, as well
as Thermador double convection ovens for 2.5 years now and we have not
regretted our decision. While they are comparably priced with the Viking
brand, the lack of sealed burners on the Viking is a HUGE issue. (I did not
think so at the time becasue I know I would never boil anything over :-) my
husband knew better) The XLO feature of the Thermador is great for
simmering. I don't melt a lot of chocolate, so I cannot comment on that
delicate procedure...

Our sales guy had both lines, but he liked the Thermador better. He has been
back to our house and may even have the Thermador folks here for some
pictures. We are VERY happy with our purchase - we had a small issue with the
griddle (thermostat) and it was replaced quickly and under warranty. The
Thermador distributor in Atlanta (closest to our Raleigh location) has been
very good, (we ordered a couple spare knobs) and everything else has performed
very well. Feel free to email me with any other specific questions.

What details made you choose the Dacor?

Please excuse the intrusion here, but it is because I DO boil
things over that I wouldn't want a sealed burner. The thought
that I would have to stop cooking so that I could wipe my stove
top before something burned on it seems somewhat ludicrous.

I don't have a cooktop, but I do have the Thermador Range, and love the
way it works. If something boils over, it's a snap to clean, and it is
so easy to work.

I don't have the XLO burners, but I have melted chocolate many times (in
Calphalon) on the lower BTU burners with the flame set to as low as it
can get. There is no burning, and I can still touch the outside of the
pan once the chocolate is melted. It's working perfectly.

As an aside, I did have a problem with the oven where one side was
cooking faster than another. It was a faulty sensor which is being
covered under warranty, and Thermador was great to deal with.

What about Vulcan? Saw these at a local restaurant supply outlet, and
the burners & valves look really heavy duty.

Dear Janni,
I am just about to receive a Viking cooktop I decided to buy, after reviewing
Thermador and Dacor. The Viking cooktop I am buying DOES have sealed burners, so
am unsure of which Viking you are referring to. Perhaps you are referring to the
Vikings that have a deep front profile? The Viking I am buying is a literal
cooktop that fits into a counter cutout, has 6 burners and is 36" wide. This
cooktop is well sealed as are the Thermador and Dacor. However this Viking is
heads above in mechanical quality as compared to the other two cooktops. It is
also about $500 more.--Jerry
