Well, you may need to see your physician.
Olfactory hallucinations are one of the 10 early warning signs of Foaljers
Psychosis (FP).
Recent studies indicate that prolonged exposure to stale/canned coffee
can cause irreversible olfactory degradation and may indeed preceed the
onset
of Foaljers Psychosis. Most interesting is that the 'phantom'
smells are quite individual - some people report smelling rotten eggs,
deisel fuel, and even cooked carrots.
Foaljers Psychosis is thought to be caused by a dramatic loss of
neurotransmitter receptor sites in the brain.
There are 5 main chemical neurotransmitters affected by FP. The OPIOIDS,
GABA, SEROTONIN, DOPAMINE and NOREPINEPHERINE. When these chemicals are
lowered (or when, in the case of clinical FP, the loss of
receptor cites effectively lowers the available neurotransmitter levels) -
a dangerous cycle begins within our bodies.
A person suffering from clinical FP also becomes irritable, easily angered,
easily loosing their temper and may suffer from violent outbursts.
Though there is no cure for Foaljers Psychosis, it can be treated if
caught early enough. Of course some individuals suffer side effects from
medications, and so they should be used with caution, and must be
monitored closely by a physician. However, what I see as the major drawback
to stimulant medications is that they only work for the short term.
For the short term, the function of the brain is improved, but the basic
underlying problems are unaffected.
FWIW, I'd try drinking stronger, fresher, & higher quality coffee for a
couple
of weeks and see if you notice any improvement. If you can't lose the tuna,
though, see a doctor.

No, not consciously, but the effect _may_ be subliminal, and if so, _may_
explain why I'm crazy about both coffee and sushi (not at the same time,
unless you want your itamae to throw you out with a tomoe-nage :-) ).

Everyone's joking around about this, but I've smelled the same thing.
I buy different (non-flavored) varieties of dark-roasted coffee from
Caribou Coffee in Atlanta. The beans themselves smell OK, but when I
grind the coffee, PU!! So far, the taste of the brewed coffee (even
when I make it strong) is rather flat. I thought it was just me, but
I'll see if trying a different brand makes a difference.

I was just in Atlanta for a month. I was somewhat perplexed at the
popularity of Caribou Coffee: they have everything a coffee shop needs,
except good coffee.
It's possible you have rancid oil in your coffee grinder (clean it), but
it may in fact just be the beans.
Ground Peet's smells like magnificent coffee, not fish!

I have had the same experience! Immediately after it is ground, there is
a scent in the room that suggests tuna. I thought it was just me, but my
daughter recently made the same observation without my ever having
suggested it.
