What is salca? (No! Not salsa, salca!)

I recently got an Albanian moussaka recipe off the web. One of the
ingredients called for was "salca". It was grouped with the herbs
and spices, right after parsley, so I'm assuming it's supposed to be
some sort of herb. Does anyone out there know what it might be?
Thanks,
Kate

Kate,

This is the only food-related "salca" I found:

Sarmisakli Sirkeli Salca (Turkish Garlic-Vinegar Sauce)

Any chance it's garlic?

Nope, "salca" just means "sauce" in Turkish.
The "sarmisakli" part means "with garlic".
And "sirkeli" means "with vinegar".
So the mystery remains.

I looked in four herb books, Webster's, and checked Epicurious. Nothing
even close. Unfortunately, I don't know any Albanian linguists.

This seems to be the recipe in question, from the following url
- http://www.albanian.com/main/culture/food/musaka.html :

Given the other ingredients, I would bet dollars to doughnuts that it is
sauce. Probably tomato sauce.

Musaka me patate

Musaka with patatoes

In 4-5 spoons of melted butter and 1 small cup of water leave to dissolve on
light heat 2 thinly cut onions. Add
3/4 kg (about 26 ounces) of minced beef, salt, black pepper and red pepper,
parsley, salca and mix the mass
without roasting it too much.

Make mashed patatoes with 1 kg (about 35 ounces) of patatoes. Spread half of
the mashed patatoes on a baking
pan covered with melted butter, then on top of the mashed patatoes spread the
beef, then on top of that the other
half of the mashed patatoes. Sprinkle with 2-3 spoons of melted butter and 1
small cup of water and place in a hot
oven and let it cook until the surface has turned red. Cover the musaka with 1
and half cups of yogurt combined
with 2-3 beaten eggs, 1 spoon of flour and some salt. Afterwards return the
musaka into the hot oven until it is
well cooked.
