Funny, you know... humans have successfully used cannabis for
millennia... WITHOUT a card! <gasp>.

WHY don't you have a card allowing you to buy veggies for your STD
meals??

This is so true, Jebus. However, it's extremely important he buy this
cannabis with a card *near where Novelty Studios was back in 1979!* A
stupid reference to his silly high school basement band no one cares about.

That would be called a SNAP/EBT card (aka Food Stamps). He probably
should look into that. Doubtful he'd use it to buy more vegetables,
though. His cooking repertoire self-limited.

From what I understand of the program, they government hands out
coupons to needy people and they can be used only for food. It is a form
of welfare but they are limited to food items so they cannot be used for
alcohol and tobacco.

"Coupons" are old school. Think of it as a prepaid debit card and the
recipient gets a specific amount loaded onto the card each month. It
can only be used to buy fresh food. Pre-cooked food such as a grocery
store rotissary chicken or food from restaurants is excluded. He could
buy a ton of potatoes, garlic, brown rice and the ingredients to make
his beloved beans, though. Even the ingredients to make toffee.

Yes, I googled and got the gist of it. It seems these days the
'stamps' are on a card that can be used in certain stores.

In principle this seems like a good idea, I'd like to see it
implemented in Australia but unfortunately even if it was, our
government would just take something else away from the poor to
compensate.

That sounds very sensible to me. If this doesn't suit anyone who is in
need just because they want 'junk' food instead, then they're not in
need.

Yes, prepaid debit-type cards with a pin. That makes them a lot more
difficult to illegally sell, as some people used to do. To build on
what Jill said, they don't allow prepared *hot* foods (such as
rotisserie), or restaurant food. Some prepared cold foods are allowed.

They do allow virtually any other food items, including complete junk
food, without limits -- which is unfortunate. I'm not saying that
junkfood should be disallowed, but limited, with a certain portion only
going to meats/cheeses/produce/cans/etc. As it is now, people with the
card could buy nothing but cakes, cookies, and chips/crisps if they
wanted to.

That's true, Michael, but then again I don't think anyone wants the
"food police" to tell people what they can and cannot eat.

A couple of months ago I was at the meat market and they had just
installed a new computer checkout system. A woman - probably about your
age or maybe a couple of years older - at the checkout ahead of me had a
couple of sweet potatoes and a couple of steaks. New system, they
couldn't figure out how to enter her EBT purchase. They had to call
tech support.

She was wearing scrubs, which tells me she working in a medical field.
Trust me, no one but Kuthe dresses in scrubs and thinks it makes a
fashion statement. ;) They finally figured out how to get the new
system to take the card but I got the feeling the woman was embarrassed
because it's a small shop and there were a number of people waiting.
Point is, she wasn't buying chips or cakes or cookies. Okay, for all I
know she left there and went to a supermarket and loaded up on cakes and
cookies and whatnot. I don't make assumptions like that.

In a previous gig I assisted clients in applying for SNAP. Some truly need
it, BUT:

- there need to be restrictions on junk food, only nutritious foods should be
available with SNAP. Peeps load up on pop, fatty and sugary snacks, etc. with
abandon. Make it more like the WIC food aid program, only approved nutritious
foods are allowed to be purchased via WIC [Women Infants Children], it is a very
effective program:

https://www.fns.usda.gov/wic

- SNAP cards are used as a "second currency", holders trade their card values for
usually 50 cents on the dollar. This money is used to buy booze, drugs, etc. It
is a real free - for - all. Require those using SNAP to produce a photo ID, and
include photos on their SNAP cards...

Both of the above would cut down on the HUGE amount of waste and fraud that
the SNAP program as it exists engenders...
