Just a wee note to thank all those kind people who have added me to their
facebook account.

I am so sorry, but I don't use facebook and haven't for a very long time. I
joined at one time because a friend asked me, but it is so long ago I can't
even remember how to get in. So, please don't take it personally that I
haven't responded, even one of my children tried to add me.

Thank you so much for thinking of me:) If you need to speak to me, my email
is good:)

Best wishes and thanks

O

It's an e-mail account. How many e-maoil accounts do people have that they

So that you can humiliated, blackmailed, etc. in the
future.

I think people who expose themselves on sites like
Facebook are total idiots, and it will take some
spectacular disasters like the Lindbergh baby to
prove that to these idiots (at least, the teachable
ones). We are heading toward a post-Facebook era,
but we aren't nearly there yet. We are currently
in the run-up to the disasters, when things seem
the opposite of what they will appear in retrospect.

"How could I have been so stupid?" will be common
refrain in the next period.

My nephew told me about a guy they were thinking of hiring. They were
all set to call the guy and offer him a job, but my nephew suggested
that they check out his FaceBook page. The totally inappropriate
material posted there led them to reconsider hiring him.

Some people really do get carried away on FaceBook. Last week my wacko
niece announced to the FaceBook world that her daughter had won the
beauty pageant she was competing in and was the new Strawberry Queen in
their town. The next day she printed a clarification. The girl had not
really won, but she was a queen in their hearts. Since she is a
sociopath and pathologicial liar, I didn't believe the daughter had
won. In fact, I wondered if she was even in the competition. It turned
out that she was, but didn't win, place or show.

That type of information is held in confidacne until you accept them
as a friend. Your nephew was being dishonest, at the least by
cohearsing someone into divulging information that was no ones

Facebook serves as an forum for personal, social and professional
networking. If you CHOOSE to post pictures of your twat...you get
what you deserve.

If you CHOOSE TO POST anything than can humiliate yourself....you
opened the door. No one else can do that.

Two words pop into my mind PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY Claiming the
devil made you do it won't hold up any longer.

And one last thing...there is the option to DEACTIVATE the account and
all information will be blocked from viewing. I NEVER claimed it
was erased...but it will be blocked so don't try to go down that
street.

I have lots of fun on there, and don't do anything more embarassing on

The new Facebook model once they get pressed
to the wall by investors -- we own the copyright
on all that stuff you uploaded, with unlimited
rights to use it, as you acknowledged when you
accepted the agreement.

You might want to buy back some of those rights.
Like those "summer break" photos. Oh yes, those ones.

And if you tried to delete them? Those are the ones
we look at first. It's called "data mining", and
who knew what rich veins we would strike before
people became smart about Facebook.

From what I have learned, it depends on your settings (privacy and
otherwise) on how much anyone can see. One can set it so that not
much at all is seen. There is are settings which you can
customize...so that no one but trusted friends see, or only you can
see.

For some groups of people (like work folks) I set it so only the very
basic info is seen.

Addendum to my own message:

I should have added, that once you start playing in all the games,
applications, requests, invites, etc...Facebooks says it opens your
profile across the whole platform.

So, if one wants to maintain a certain privacy there (which I do),
they can avoid doing all the extraneous stuff. So, I don't
participate in the games, quizzes, invites, requests, gifts, etc to
maintain the level of privacy I want.

I expect that if stuff is readily seen by anyone coming into Facebook
(the public) the person in question has not really set his privacy
level so that just anyone cannot see it. Or is participating in all
the activities that are available on FB. It's their choice or
ignorance of what privacy levels can be set.

I must say, FB has brought me closer to quite a few folks... Some of

I'm not sure I understand why you guys feel the need to announce to
the world that you're getting rid of extra baggage on Facebook. I
truly hadn't noticed that either of you were missing from my friend's

No matter. I've got some awesome friends on Facebook who I *would*

Because it was announced, so I checked. I thought I cared, but I

My sincere apologies to Vilco. You were on page 2, so I didn't spot

anyone else decides to pull a Dave.

I'm very sorry.

I don't think that either of us went out of our way to hurt anyone. No
names were mentioned. I just said that I unfriended some who were
posting (IMO) too much stuff on it.

Well, there you go. No one else knew who was dropped from my Friends
list, and no one would have known that you were one of them until you
announced it. It was nothing personal, just that every time I checked FB
there would be numerous announcements and status updates. Don't feel bad
about it. It is not like you were one of the others whose all too
frequent updates were about their descent into depression.

Actually, you can do this yourself.

Go to the settings button and click on it. Then click on the Privacy
menu. When that comes up, you will see, (sorta small, I must admit),
a little space where you can input a friend's name, and see what they
view when they see your info.

I learned to modify some of mine, for some folks I know...... You can
specify what specific folks see. I have some set to see very little,
and others to see most of what I have.... I test it out by doing the
above testing...with a friend's name.

Miche turned me onto some of this stuff. She posted an article or
website that helped me. I think I found out some other stuff
somewhere else.

Facebook has been a wonderful, for me. I can keep up with my family,
friends, neighbors, classmates from school, childhood friends, former
coworkers, an ex-boyfriend. Some of the games and applications began to
take up too much time, so I had to ban the applications. :-( It does
not mean that I do not like the people, because I do.

BTW, you can join Facebook without using personal photographs. If you
check my "friends" list, you will see one friend who uses a cartoon
instead of a photo. Funny thing is, it looks just like her.

I tend to agree that somebody announcing they've 'unfriended' somebody
on FB is somewhat crass. However, I'd have to say that announcing
who(m?) one has in one's killfile is equally crass - and I seem to
recall you've done that more than once or twice yourself. Just sayin'.

For the record, I don't recall anyone posting here that they had
unfriended an particular person. I agree that is tacky, and if you look
at my previous posts on the topic I have said that it is bad form to
announce that you have kill filed a particular person. I also said that
it is even worse to say that you have KF'ed someone and then respond to
them/ That just makes you look like a complete idiot. Never the less, I
have recommended that people use kill files and save themselves the
hassle of being exposed to their offensive grab, or to save themselves
the grief of responding. Some people just aren't worth the effort.

However.... I should point out that what I said was that I had
unfriended some people because IMO they were posting too much stuff on
FB. I never said who they were.

AFAIK, I have not been unfriended anyone on FB. I never got any
notification that someone had removed themselves from my list of
friends, and quite frankly, I have never looked to see if anyone has
been removed. So how was I supposed to know that one of them would get
a notification, or that they would care?

It is nice to have a forum to share and to see interesting things
posted. Some people have interesting things to say. Others seem
compelled to let the world know every game they have played, every quiz
they have answered, send countless notifications and requests and post
hourly updates on the progress of their day. Let's just say that it is
overload.

Is it safe to divulge another little trick? I am not a bog fan of
chatting. I have a few friends, people I know in real life, who always
want to chat. They frequently break into chat with me and I indulge them
for a while, but I don't really enjoy it much. So when I open FB I look
at the friends online box, and if I see their names on there I switch to
another site.

My apologies. I guess the post I saw must have been made by another Dave
Smith or an <Cathy lowers her voice to a whisper> imposter...

Read it a little more carefully. My initial comment was :

"I don't put anything on there that I would be embarrassed for people to
see, but I have unfriended a number of people who post too much stuff on
it."

I didn't attach any names to it. Then Carol posted:

" On Sun, 07 Jun 2009 19:58:09 -0400, Dave Smith
<adavid...@sympatico.ca> wrote:

> >I don't put anything on there that I would be embarrassed for people to

:(

Carol, deleted"

And then she posted:
"I'm not sure I understand why you guys feel the need to announce to
the world that you're getting rid of extra baggage on Facebook. I
truly hadn't noticed that either of you were missing from my friend's
list until you mentioned something. Why go out of your ways to try to
hurt people? "

So, as you can see, I said that no one would have known that it was her
if she had not announced it.

It was not meant to hurt her or anyone else. I referred only to people
who IMO posted too much stuff on FaceBook. I don't need to know that
much about my FB friends. I don't want to go to FB and find hourly
updates by a small number of people just too much information for me and
I would prefer to limit the amount of stuff I have to see there.

You can mark yourself offline so that isn't a problem. I never chat on FB.
I'm marked offline and noone sees me.

How long have you been on this group? 10 years? Longer? I've only been
here for 4 years and even *I* know that mentioning
killfiling/unfriending anybody (even without mentioning any names)
usually causes a ruckus.

Good job you didn't mention any private email lists either...

I belive that the sole reason why Facebook has supplanted MySpace is
that Newscorp bought MySpace, and so many people hate Newscorp/Fox
News/Rupert Murdoch that when they had an alternative they took it. I
like MySpace's format and functionality better than Facebook's, and
I'm among those who hate Newscorp/Fox News/Rupert Murdoch.

I was never interested in joining MySpace and I have even less interest
in joining Facebook. BTW, Have you read Facebook's Terms of Use?

I especially like this bit:
