Seven Seas seemed to disappear for a while, then it was back but it
was clearly not the same. Theirs was the Viva/Zesty Italian that I
like on tomato cucumber salad. The dressing was separated in the
bottle, with the solid ingredients at the bottom, you had to shake
it.

Instead of the ingredients being weirdly suspended in a gel-looking
substance.

Zesty Italian just isn't the same made from scratch.

I think I have Hidden Valley Zesty Italian.....if so, I really like it, and there
isn't any gel about it. I'll have to look.

I make a pasta salad and the original recipe says to use Wishbone Italian
dressing and no other. I was told that it wouldn't taste the same with
other dressing. And it didn't. Just wasn't nearly as good.

But then they changed the Wishbone and now it's no good. So... When I make
it, I use either some cheap stuff from Dollar Tree or I make my own. Still
not the same but pretty good.

I get that, Wishbone was a good brand, too, at least as far as
the zesty italian went.

I thought to try the salad dressing that came in an envelope,
what the heck is the name. Good Seasons. I thought it might have
all the dried pepper bits and herbs, etc., and I could just add my
own oil and vinegar. Perhaps I will try that.

I have found a recipe that looks promising.

Thanks, I'll check for that. I don't actually use a lot of salad
dressing so I never would have thought to check that brand for
other than creamy dressing recipes.

I thought the house dressing I get at a certain restaurant was head
and shoulders above what I make at home. A lemon, honey and olive oil
vinaigrette is close - but it isn't "right". Hubby ordered had it on
the side the other day and I took the leftovers home. Finally tried
it in the light of day without anything else clouding my palette and
definitely detected anchovy, so that's the secret. Haven't added
anchovy (I have a tube) to my own dressing yet, so I haven't tested my
hypothesis.

Ah yes! Initially it came with it's own measure/shaker carafe/bottle to
mix it in. I think I still have an envelope of Good Seasons Italian
dressing mix in the pantry. The bottle for shaking it is long gone).
Even though I don't care for salad it was my "job" to prepare the salad
and the Good Seasons dressing when I was a kid. :)

I'm sure you did. I did mention I was a kid and this is what my mother
bought. I don't care for salad. It was a kiddie chore. :)

I have used different types of bottled dressings as marinades over the
years but mostly make my own.

About ten years ago, Good Seasons sold a package of four or five
packets of Italian seasoning with a "free" capped carafe. It shows a
line for water, for vinegar and for oil, just like the old one. I have
it along with a Tupperware dispenser that works perfectly with HVR dry
mix. I use the HVR buttermilk packet.
While looking for the GS dispenser, I found the HVR dispenser which I
forgot I had. So again, Thanks RFC!
I really do make dressings on my own. Especially Italian. Ranch, not so
much.

I really like the Joy of Cooking ranch dressing recipe, although I usually
simplify it to garlic and herbs in buttermilk. I prefer a thinner dressing,
which coats the salad while using much less dressing. It allows the taste
of the vegetables through much better, IMO.

1 clove garlic
3/4 cup buttermilk
2-3 tablespoons lime juice
1 tablespoon minced cilantro or parsley
1 tablespoon minced chives
salt and pepper
1/3 to 1/2 cup of mayonnaise or sour cream if you prefer a thicker dressing

I generally buy a pint of buttermilk, open the bottle and cram
a scaled amount of these ingredients into the bottle. I often
omit the lime juice and use both cilantro and parsley.

That said, I sometimes just mix Hidden Valley powder into yogurt
as a dip for crudités when I want some veg but don't feel like making
a salad.

Ranch dressing is easy to make, and in my opinion tastes so much better
than any of the store-bought brands, even HVR:

1/2 cup homemade mayonnaise
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1/8 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon ground mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 heaping tablespoon fresh finely chopped parsley
1 heaping teaspoon fresh finely chopped chives
1 heaping teaspoon fresh finely chopped dill

Stir the mayonnaise and buttermilk together and then add the rest of the
ingredients.

Thanks fer the recipe. No doubt many, here, will apprecieate it.

Personally, I despise ranch dressing. It's one of the very few foods I
refuse to ingest. I specially hate restaurants that put blue cheese
chunks in ranch dressing and pass it off as blue cheese dressing.

As for the posted subject, I usta use Seven Seas Balsamic. This was
many yrs ago. I know the balsamic part was more-than-likely jes a
chemical blend, but they did it well.

I'm not sure how long it keeps. I'm pretty indifferent to that sort
of food safety. (I'll go 7 days on meat that I've cooked.) Certainly
I've used it for a week or two; the "best by" date on the buttermilk is
often a month out when I buy it.

All my life I grew up with the "Italian Dressing" packets and the carafe. All you did was add oil & vinegar.
The longer it sat the better!!!!!! I never feared eating it if it was in the fridge for months.

The problem is I cannot remember if it is "7 Seas" or "Good Seasons". The problem is that big companies buy/acquire companies and I can't remember the correct dry packet/carafe brand that we used for YEARS!!! thx

The cat was probably in the kitchen where Jill forbids
it to be. She thinks she won.
Unknown to her, every time her back is turned, that cat
will be in the forbidden zone.
Cat owns that house, not Jill.

Mr.Kitty here well knew his limits and what I didn't allow.
Didn't stop him at all. Soon as I went to work or even

I'm sure you think you know what you're talking about but you don't.
You probably assume I feed her in the kitchen. Nope. The kitchen is
not laid out in a way that offers any good place to set her food and
water bowls. She's fed in the bedroom. Her *dry* food is in an
airtight bin in the master bathroom closet. She sometimes wanders into
the kitchen when I'm dishing up her *canned* food in the morning. (I
store that in the pantry and refrigerate the open can). But she usually
just sits by the doorway and meows at me to hurry up and bring the bowl
to the bedroom.

If I was really concerned about her getting up to something in the
kitchen when I'm not around I'd just close the door.

He can't help because he's a Google Grouper replying to a two year old

Penzey's makes a very nice Green Goddess herb blend. It smells
fantastic and is intended to be used, of course, to make salad dressing.
I've found it's also very nice sprinkled on chicken prior to roasting.

We got rid of Penzey's after they abused customer trust by using our
private emails to send political rants. We use Savory Spice Shop and
they are just as good if not better.

You're pretty thin-skinned. Although I'll admit I avoid buying from
Eden Foods because of political reasons.

I'm not thin skinned. We made a collective order and *all* were upset
as they had accounts too and got the emails. It started with anti-gay
they rocketed to anti-republican and insults of all who didnt vote for
Hillary Clinton.

Use your money where you want. We moved to a responsible company that
doesn't abuse our trust wtih our private email addresses.
