I bought a container of the steel-cut oatmeal from Aldi the other day.
Boy, compared to the flat-rolled stuff, you have to simmer the heck out
of it. My review: I think it was more flavorful and had a nicer
texture than the flat-rolled quick oats. It's worth the wait, if you
don't mind waiting the half hour or so. I tried some plain (lightly
salted). After, I added a small spoon of dark brown sugar, several
spoons of apple sauce, and a few good shakes of cinnamon. Yum!

Also, it's fresh blackberry season. Somehow, I managed to beat the
birds this year, and I picked a few dozen; They are in a bowl in the
fridge, now. There are a number yet, ready to ripen up. These few
plants are growing wild in a weed patch near the back of my yard. I
ought to save some seeds and purposefully propagate more next year; they
are delicious.

I bought some steel-cut oats a few years ago. Honestly, as far as flavor,
I could tell no difference in taste, so I just went back to regular rolled oats.

Enjoy. Blackberries have a very unpleasant twang to me no matter how
much sugar is added to them. I'm not even going to go into detail with
those awful gravel-like seeds. Raspberries are in the same category.

Some folks feel that way. My wife and I love them, and I grow
them in several locations, mostly blackberries, but also black
raspberries, and last year we added a couple of red raspberries.

Where I grew up blackberry bushes were all over the place, especially on old abandoned
farmsteads and cemeteries... we'd get GALLONS, and that was barely skimming what
was available...

Peeps put up blackberry jam, both canned and freezer jam... we always had a lot on hand...

I was able to purchase black raspberry SEEDLESS jam when I was working
and there was a Harris Teeter less than two miles away. But the last two
jars I had bought were not processed correctly or whatever they should have
done when making the jam, they didn't do. Soon after opening, the jam would
become quite grainy, but previous jars did not. It wasn't spoiled, just a very
unpleasant texture.

My mother always made jam cakes at Christmas using blackberry jam.
She asked once why I never ate the cake, just the icing? I told her it was
those awful hard as a rock seeds that made me shy away. After that, she
made her cakes with seedless jam and I'd dive right in. The cake batter
and the icing, I suppose, quelled the blackberry twang.

David preferred the steel cut and I used to put some in a Thermos
container, add boiling water and leave overnight. Worked perfectly,
ready whenever he wanted his brekkie.

When you say 'twang', isn't the fruit unripe? I've had wild grown
blackberries and home grown raspberries and if you didn't pick them
too early, that were sweet.

I saw some black raspberries getting ready in the back 40 this morning
when I discarded my garlic scapes. They were puny, because of lack
of rain.

It'll take a long time to propagate from seed. Try cutting a couple
of canes, sticking them in the ground, and keeping them moist. When
I grew berries, any canes that leaned over and touched the ground put
out roots and made another plant.

I liked steel cut oats but didn't think it was worth the extra cooking
time to get something that tastes basically the same as large flake, and
the large flake is more versatile. I can use them for cookies, date
squares and pancakes.

That works with raspberries, but not so well with blackberries,
which mostly send shoots up from roots. All of these came up
from roots out in my yard.

No, it's just me and my aversion to them. My mother would make a
blackberry cobbler and my brothers would remark how sweeeeeet it
was. They have an ending sharp unpleasantness to me; almost, not
quite bitter.

I ran into the opposite problem today. It has been raining like crazy
here. As a result, there are no strawberries. Cherry farmers are getting
concerned. The sweet cherries are just starting to ripen and if they get
too much rain the bloat and burst their skins.

i'm not sure what i have here, i think it is the
regular rolled oats. from start to finish in the
microwave it's about 10 minutes. i put them in the
bowl and then mic on high until it's boiling and
then i cut the power level back to 2 and go another
8 minutes 11 seconds (8 minutes to get the right
amount of done and the 11 seconds to rotate the
handle of the bowl around to where i can grab it).

if i measured more precisely i could get more
exact timing on the bringing to boil stage.

steel cut oats. simmer for a half hour? nope.
i'm not doing that for breakfast unless it's all i
have on hand. i'm sure i tried them and just went
back to regular. the more finely pressed quick
versions don't work for me as i need the oats cooked
well enough anyways or my digestive system doesn't
do as well with them. i can eat raw oats in small
amounts (i put some on my cereals at times to give
them more body and chew), but not more than a few
bites.

i love almost all fruits and we have red raspberries
growing around here. the seeds get dropped from the
birds so i don't have any specific patch for them (it's
a lot of work to have them). at one time at another
place i lived we had a nice golden raspberry patch until
the neighbors cut it down - the birds did not seem to
get after those.

I hope the rains extended far enough north to deal with the forest
fires. Rain doesn't affect the limited arthritis I have. My issue is
the cold and damp of winter and the effect on my sternum, which was
ripped open for heart surgery.

You stupid old cunt. You trim like shit, just like you cook
like shit. Bruce, of all people, nailed you. You trim, but
it's either ignorantly or worse, strategically. I'm tempted
to give you a pass because you seem stupid, but I think
that you are a manipulative bitch, *precisely* because of
your selective trimming. Anyway, your air fryer needs
you. He misses you. When you prepare food any other
way, he gets jealous. He's probably already jealous of
your bicycle seat.

If you're an oatmeal person it may well be worth the extra cooking time
and a slightly different texture from rolled oats. I bought a tin of
Irish (imported) steel cut oatmeal once. It tasted fine but wasn't
really worth the extra cooking time. Then again, I don't eat a lot of
oatmeal.

You are just lazy. Your cooking reflects that. You're so lazy
that you cook pork chops (and even <gasp> hamburgers)
ahead of time in your air fryer for the next day. You are a
low quality cook, and a low quality thinker, who seems to be

Trimming used to be important back in the days of 56K

not to trim out context, because otherwise folks would

Nope, GM here makes effective use of his time and resourses, e.g. why re - write what someone
else has already done...

Since it's hot up in Canuck Land, here's a "cool" gift for you:

https://www.curbsideclassic.com/blog/cold-comfort/cold-comfort-1962-chevrolet-corvair-factory-air-conditioning/

Cold Comfort: 1962 Chevrolet Corvair with Factory Air Conditioning

BY TOM HALTER – POSTED ON JULY 6, 2023

"As readers of my three-part Cold Comfort series on factory air conditioning know, I have a preternatural obsession with automotive air conditioning. The response to those posts was so positive, I’ve decided to turn Cold Comfort into a recurring series, featuring interesting or rare early automotive A/C setups that I run across. This will allow me to dig a little deeper into the various units that I was only able to gloss over in my original series.

To kick things off on my (hopefully) long-running series, where better to start than with this Chevrolet Corvair I spotted at a recent car show. The Corvair has long been a source of fascination on this site, and Paul recently put together an interesting piece on the gas powered heater that was available on early Corvairs.

The Corvair had an interesting transformation from economy car to pony car progenitor with the introduction of the Monza in 1961. This shift upmarket necessitated the introduction of features expected in this vehicle class, including air conditioning. The factory air conditioning (“De Luxe Air Conditioning”) system was first offered in the spring of 1961, at a cost of some $350 (about $3,500 today), or about 16% of the total cost of a new Monza coupe.

In addition to the factory system, a dealer-installed “hang on” unit was also available. The featured car has the factory De Luxe system, although the compressor is clearly not original.

Corvair Cognoscenti (ooh, I loved writing that) know that all 1962 Corvairs have their spare tire mounted in the engine compartment, to free up space in the front-located trunk. However, if you opted for air conditioning, the compressor, receiver, and massive condenser coil took up most of the free space in the engine compartment, relegating the spare tire back to the front. Such is the price of comfort, I guess.

Other changes include a different drive pulley to accommodate the extra belt for the compressor. The engine fan (not visible under the condenser) would have done double duty, pulling air across the condenser in addition to cooling the engine.

Inside, there is a surprisingly well integrated (but alas not color-matched) panel that combines the controls, two “eyeball” vents, and a “barrel” vent in a single compact unit. Note that the A/C panel is an add-on to the radio panel, which itself is an add-on to the dashboard, so I guess that makes the A/C panel an add-on to an add-on. The evaporator is mounted to the firewall above the passenger footwell, like most modern cars.

Chevrolet didn’t go out of their way to promote the air conditioning option on the Corvair. The 1962 Corvair brochure has no photos of the option and makes only a passing reference to it on the spec page. A/C was available on any two- or four-door model, so long as you opted for a radio (necessary for mounting the interior panel).

Interest in the option was suitably low, with the take rate for A/C on the 1961 Corvair at a paltry 1%. In 1962, the take rate increased to a whopping 2.5%. While this works out to roughly 5,000 cars, I’m sure that far fewer than that survive today. Air conditioning was not available with the turbocharged Spyder or Corsa engine.

For the heavily revised gen2 1965 Corvair, the system was fully integrated into the new dashboard. The condenser still rode on top of the fan for 1965, but for 1966 and 1967 (above), it was moved up against the rear firewall. Factory air was dropped in 1968, as the air pump for the emission system now occupied the space where the compressor had been. At least the two-belt pulley was able to be used for that...."

Bryan definitely resorts to name-calling anytime someone disagrees with
him but particularly if women do. He does love to use the word "cunt"
when he gets in these pissy moods. Petty ramblings of a childish man.
I certainly am glad I don't know anyone like him in person.

I don't remember telling you that. It's also not very important IMO. I
always try to keep the quoted and the new text fit in one screen, if
possible, so no scrolling is required. But that's just me.

I really like the flavor of them; no sugar needed. I just crunch
through the seeds, heh. I don't enjoy them, but they don't phase me,
much. I also bought a container of raspberries on sale in the store.

I think the confusion here is that an actual Usenet reader renders
differently than your Google Groups program. Bryan replied under my
quote to me, then to you further down in the reply, instead of making
two separate posts.

Perhaps so, but I wanted to try something different. The taste wasn't a
lot different, but I did like the texture. I'm undecided as to whether
I'll buy them again, but I'll probably have the tub of them for a while.
I don't often eat oat meal. If I made it daily, I would not want to
wait 30 minutes each morning.

That seems to be a common consensus, but they never bothered me much.

Greg, I'm going out to Dayton-ish (Ohio) area, probably early next week,
to pick up a 1973 Plymouth Fury Sport Suburban full-size woody wagon.
Boy, are those things getting hard to find. 400 cu in V8 and it looks
like it has factory air. It's not nearly as pretty as this one below,
but it's the same color.

Very nice... from the ChryCo "late fuselage" era...

Here's a piece about the humongous Chrysler T & C's of that era:

https://www.curbsideclassic.com/uncategorized/curbside-outtake-chrysler-town-country/

My grandpa had this exact same car, a '54 Ford Mainline "Tudor", he was a State Farm insurance agent, one of the first in IL in fact to
sell auto insurance earlier in the 20th century. He and his brother drove from IL to Yellowstone in this car in the summer
of 1954. He was born in 1877, such a thing could not be dreamed of then:

https://www.curbsideclassic.com/curbside-classics-american/curbside-classic-1954-ford-mainline-an-alternate-take-on-life/

He traded this in for a '57 Ford Custom two - door sedan, exact same green color...

He uses Google Groups to reply, he decided to reply to you but left my name
as the first one in the post. Everybody here sees he replied to me but claims
he was replying to you. He should have replied further up but was too lazy to
go that post.

I had a '62 Corvair Spyder from 1965 until 1967. Then some guy rear
ended it on the highway at dusk. He said, "I didn't even see you!"
It was white with a blue interior and a long, skinny gearshift.
This was before Ralph Nader went ape and destroyed the brand with the
support of the newly #woke media.
I don't remember if it had air conditioning. I liked the car.

That's gorgeous; before the T&C minivans took over. I'll find one of

Another fine car... odd that it mentions "Ford-O-Matic", and shows what
looks like a 3 on the tree with a clutch pedal in the picture.
