And Michael, imagine this with a Geo Metro 998cc, and
5 speed. Sure, I wouldn't want to take it on the freeway,
but for a little city car...

Didn't John say that he has one of these in BRIGHT PINK, so he can tool around in it with
his Bugz Bunny Krum - Enkrusted Plush Toy...??? It IS a "girly car", after all...

These are still popular for parade use...

Not my bag really, but it's decently - priced for a collectible, a nice one can be had for around $15K:

"Sales were low at first, Nash Metropolitan, possibly because the Metropolitan was marketed specifically
to women (its first spokesman was 1954's "Miss America"); other cars marketed to women also failed,
most notably the Dodge LaFemme.

Like the moder Mini and Fiat 500, the Metropolitan was not marketed as an economy car, but as an
economical premium car, ideal for commuting; its size was designed to allow for European sales,
where traditional American cars were rapidly dying out because of their size.

Floyd Clymer brought a 1957 Nash Metropolitan 1500 up Pikes Peak, and famed reviewer Tom
McCahill wrote that it was "a fleet, sporty little bucket." Motor Trend achieved 30 mpg in traffic,
and 27 mpg at a steady 60 mph; cornering, steering, and general feel were highly rated, though
ride on rough roads was criticized. Quality was claimed to be surprisingly high.

In 1962, AMC dropped the Metropolitan. Between Nash, AMC, and Hudson, they had sold 94,986
of the Hudson, AMC, and Nash Metropolitans, enough to finally wear out the tooling, not enough
to make the Metropolitans a common sight at car shows. The Metropolitan never came close to
the Nash Rambler. Had they held on until 1973, AMC would have been seen as prescient; but it
is not likely that the company ever recovered even the modest $2 million development cost of
the original Metropolitan, and it seems likely that they only kept the car going because the
tooling was already paid for..."

I only looked at the first one in the slide show... NASH METROPOLITAN!!
Geo Metro was based on that. I'd drive one of those in a heartbeat,
if they could still be found for less than a small fortune. Not a
freeway cruiser with the 3 speed manual, but to heck with the article
writer who would "be embarrassed to take it out"... I'd even drive a
pink one if that was what I was offered, lol.

I agree, I prefer old boats, but I'd sure drive one if I could get my
hands on one, why not?

Guy from Detroit just got my car and dropped this '65 off. Original
paint to boot. I'll have fun with this when the layers of ice melt off.

Nice! I love those '65 Fords, very smooth lines, straight - edged...

FRIDAY FUN...!!!

First, Vegas in the 50's:

"Exceptional Kodachrome Mid-1950s View of the Las Vegas Strip. Today’s image taken in 1954
contains a fabulous daytime view of traffic at the intersection of Fremont St. and S. 2nd St. on
the famous Las Vegas Strip. The photo also provides an excellent look at the construction of
the over-the-top signage competing for visitors’ attention..."

Check out "the dude with the Stude", lol:

Wow, 5 adults plus children, and it still looks like a comfortable ride
in that convertible... it isn't even sitting low.

It's no longer Friday, but for fun, Oldsmobile:

I think the most beautiful ride of the era was a 66 Toronado. It was a big, heavy, car with a V-8. It was also front wheel drive - for some reason. That configuration was kind of a dead end.

When I was a kid, we went on across the country vacations in
an Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight. That was a big car. In 1990-92,
my wife and I had this exact car, except ours had peeling vinyl
on the roof, and a lot of body putty.
https://www.hemmings.com/stories/2020/11/18/conspicuous-cruising-in-a-big-red-1975-cadillac-coupe-deville
It had a 500 cu in engine.

Those were nice cars. Had an aunt who bought a fully - loaded '67 Cutlass Supreme four - door hardtop, cream with a black vinyl roof and interior... her hubby had a brand new '67 Cougar...

They bought their kids Corvettes and Corvair Monzas...

Here's the "Dream Car Design" Turnpike Cruiser, from Mercury in 1957. "Modern" when new, but it dated very quickly, by '60 these were considered antiques:

I was obsessed with that when it came out in late '65... SO "futuristic"...

But the brakes on the front - heavy beast were so bad that driving could be
hazardous... IIRC 'Consumer Reports' almost rated it as "unacceptable" for
safety reasons...

And yeah, the original Toro was "an answer to a question nobody had asked"...

I'd buy one in a heartbeat, though - updated with modern disc brakes...

That must have been a thirsty car. 230 inches long... wow. Guess they
had to one-up the Buick 225. Must have been a trip to parallel park also.

I'm back to driving my mid-size '89 Olds Cutlass Ciera wagon for the
winter. Nothing to write home about, but it does seem to stop under its
own power, haha.

Car styles in that era seemed to change drastically. Those "breezeway"
rear windows seemed to be short lived. Very similar to what the 90's
Honda Del Sol's got.
