Hi gang. I have a great dill dip recipe that calls for Bon Appetit
seasoning which I usually use Beau Monde for as I can't find
BA. I looked at the ingredients on the bottle of the BM at the
store the other day and it says salt and celery seed. Wow, I can
make that at home can't I? I need to make 60 batches of it and I
think I could make it less expensive by making my own seasoning.
Whaddya all think???

That sounds reasonable. Try making a small amount of the dip
recipe with your home made spice blend to see how it tastes.

I checked epicurious, the only recipe I came across using Beau Monde
was this one:

DILL WEED DIP

From my mom, Kathy Spivey. Simple and delicious!
3/4 cup mayonnaise
3/4 cup sour cream
2 tablespoons dry minced onion
2 teaspoons "beau appetit" or "beau monde" seasoning
2 teaspoons dried dill weed

Mix ingredients together. Chill. Serve with assorted raw vegetables.

No recipe for BEAU appetit seasoning, not Bon Appetit.

Why not, you know what it's supposed to taste like, just make a
small batch and keep track of the preportions of salt and celery seed.
Careful with the salt.

I am holding a bottle of Spice Islands Beau Monde..Ingredients listed are:
Salt, Dextrose, Onion, Celery Seed and Silicon Dioxide

When I run out, I use Onion Powder and Celery Salt. It works well for me.

Thanks a ton, that's what I was hoping...Why is the stuff so
stinking expensive?? I think Silicon Dioxide is an anti-caking
agent, but what is Dextrose??
thanks so much!!

Where were you able to find Beau Monde seasoning - at which store?
We are not able to find it here anymore. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

It's a type of sugar, dextrorotatory glucose. That means that it is the
same composition as glucose, but the polarization of light passing
through the crystals rotates to the right instead of left.

I think there's probably an anti-caking agent in the onion powder. As
far as the cost of Bon Appetit, McCormick's has it in their "Gourmet
Collection", rather than their regular line. Translated, that means
you pay more for less product, but in a fancier bottle. Once hooked,
you just keep buying their other spices in matching bottles, at
ever-increasing price. How well I know!

I make my own version of Bon Appetit all the time - celery salt (not
seed) and onion powder. I just mix it up until the color looks right
(darker rather than lighter). It tastes exactly the same as BA and
yes, it's less expensive. HTH
