I had a beef cutlet today. It's quite a treat. My wife was surprised that I ate the whole thing. It was served American style i.e., not cut up.

You are following the right path by eating "meat - free".

It's also a good way to reduce one's "carbon footprint", which we know you are keen to do.

Yeah, back then old Smeagol could afford to eat steak.
There are few aspects to John's life that make it worth
living anymore. Remember how much he enjoyed the
free steak before the steak place fired him because he
couldn't do the job of "kitchen porter"???? But he doesn't
get enough in food stamps to afford steaks, so he calls
those of us who *can* afford delicious steaks things
like "BeefHEAD!"

Maybe John is a BEANhead! One thing is for sure, he's

Nursing school did not qualify him to diagnose anyone with anything.
Yet it's quite clear to any layperson reading his posts who it is
suffering from NPD. Kuthe takes a post about steak and turns it around
to make it all about himself. Classic narcissist behaviour.

OB Food: Yes, beef for dinner. It will be a nice juicy beef hamburger,
cooked to medium rare. Now that I think about it, maybe I'll cook some
bacon and turn it into a bacon cheeseburger :)

I'd say your assessment of corn's popularity is correct. You're wrong about it not being the Holy Grail of vegetables. It's also the King of Vegetables. There's nothing that corn can't do. As far as I know, you can't do nothing with an asparagus.

Bruce, one of the appeals is the color 'pop' on the plate. Like most,
I like my dishes to be appealing to the eye.

Here's a common vegetarian dish we make.

1 can corn
1 can diced tomatoes with green chilis
3-4 tb red onion, diced fairly small

Cook the 2 cans together then serve with slotted spoon. Top with onion
'to taste'.

Variations: 1 can black beans cooked separately. Drain all then mix
and top with onion.

Southern USA folks might serve this over hot cornbread or choose rice
to ladle it over (brown, white and red are the common USA rices).

Another reason of course is it's cheap here.

When I was growing up, pork and beef cutlets were typically served with plate lunches. These days, chicken katsu is served everywhere in Hawaii. It's not often that I see pork katsu and beef cutlets are rarer still. Beats me why that is - I love beef cutlets. The difference between a katsu and a cutlet is that a katsu is breaded with panko crumbs.

You know you can get non-GM corn here if worried about it. Even in
cans. Delmonte is one of them. Also GM is 'genetically modified'
which has nothing to do with with use/non-use of round up. Many are
organically grown (no pesticides or weed killers) and also sold fresh
or canned.

You are strething too far on this one.

Bruce doesn't care because he doesn't live in the US nor does he know
much about it. He assumes a lot, including the fact that all corn is
GMO, and takes every opportunity to bash on anything USian.

Most corn is genetically modified to be herbicide tolerant.

One of the reasons why it's genetically modified is so that it can
survive Roundup, which then only kills weeds, but not the modified
corn itself.

I thought everybody knew this, but here goes:
"According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), over
90% of the corn planted in the U.S. is genetically modified."

I might just have to make that. I have a can of diced tomatoes and
chilies that I have yet to do anything with. Lots of cans of white
shoepeg corn. Shoepeg corn is my favorite; I usually stock a good 3-5
cans of it. You don't cook the onions into it; just eat them raw on top?

Forget not that the *vast* majority of our corn is grown for cattle feed
and ethanol fuel (which is a horrible idea to begin with). Very little
of that corn is eaten by humans, in comparison.

My recent comment on a news site about raising the local minimum wage:

"Notice the movement to self-checkout?

Or the kiosks that eliminate an order taking employee?

Have you seen the robotics that build vehicles or other goods, replacing a whole workforce?

Many positions have already been replaced by uncomplaining robots that don’t require an HR department, minimum wage, FICA, health benefits, vacations, or workers compensation insurance. They don’t sue for discrimination, call in sick, require accommodation or refuse to work on holidays… and with AI this trend will only accelerate…

That’s the future – fewer and fewer entry level positions when employers must pay higher minimum wage for ‘warm body’ positions…

In any case, “minimum wage” was never meant to be a “living wage”, minimum wage might more correctly be called an “entry level wage”… and it’s the responsibility of an employee to show the initiative to improve their lot in life and thus earn more…

Respectfully,
Greg Morrow"

People have been talking about this for decades but 2023 is the year that AI has hit the level of the guy on the street. Things will progress rapidly for now on because machines don't learn stuff in the agonizingly slow way that humans do. They learn/think/realize stuff in milliseconds. The machines could kill us off not for the usual reasons we use to kill: greed, envy, or avaricious desires. They could kill us all just because it's the logical/reasonable thing to do.

In the end, we can't stop technology - at least, I'm not aware of a civilization that was able to do it. In a short while, we'll be seeing movies written by machines, that star long dead Hollywood actors. Everything we see and hear on the glowing screen and the music we listen to will be artificial/synthesized/fake. We'll be living in a world where humans won't be the innovators/builders/creators of technology - machines will. Smart/creative/insightful humans will pretty much be obsolete. It could happen within your lifetime. It could happen within my lifetime. Humanity will just have to learn to be AI's bitch - until the time that the machines decide we're superfluous.

AI taking over is at least as old as 1950s science fiction. Old Asimov
had a lot to say about it too.

But look at the bright side. Maybe Asians and non Asians can unite and
fight the robots together!
