Good for you. Next Tuesday, I will go to Ranch 99 supermarket, buy
live greenlip mussels for $3.99, and steam them in wine/broth.

Both of us seem to be happy with our respective notions of what
freshness is all about.

I finally got around to looking them up at Ranch 99 a couple of weeks
ago. They are called "Live green mussles from New Zealand". They sell
for $3.99. They lok exactly like this:

So, I bet they are indeed Green Lip.

Look, Sqwertz, I know that you hate live greenlip mussels, preferring
frozen. But you can always freeze them, then defrost them a few years
later - and voila! - you got yourself a meal!

I, on the other hand, will stick with steaming them live.

So you can find live green lips at 99 Ranch? Is that Emeryville?
I'll look in the Daly City store this week. I've tried frozen green
lips twice and they were vile... inedible in fact. Not subjecting
myself to frozen again, but I'll give live green lips one last chance
and see how I like them. Frankly, I like the common black ones. They
are always fresh and sweet.

Frank, I shop at Ranch 99 in San Jose on Wolfe Rd. I saw them a couple
of weeks ago, but I haven't bought any mussles for 2 or 3 months.
Summer is not a good time to eat fresh/live mussels. Wait til
September-October.

Yesterday, the live lobsters sold for $7.99 at Ranch 99, but I suspect
that their shells are soft, meaning you don't get much meat inside.
Does anybody know in what months the lobster shells are at their
firmest?

Well, I had bought the live ones at Ranch 99 at least 10 times in the
last 3 years. I cook them in either wine or in a Thai curry. They
tasted very good to me.

For some reason, I settled on the green ones long time ago and don't
even remember how the black ones taste. But the people at RFC seem to
imply that the green ones are better.

I can second that. Ranch 99 sells them frozen as well. I bought them
once. They were disgusting, both flavorwise and texturewise. Never
again!

But live ones are nothing like that.

Yet another thing I miss by living 1200 miles from the nearest ocean,
including:

mussels
scallops
clams (soft shell steamers)
quahogs (N.E. littlenecks/hard shell/chowder clams)
scallops
lobster
crabs
the smell and sound and view of the ocean.

They overnight everything inland except the last one. You'll have to

I've had green-lip mussels from Whole Foods (frozen of course since
they're from New Zealand) and also with hot bean sauce in Vietnamese and
"Chinese" restaurants. They were good!

Ranch 99, which is on the corner of Homestead and Wolfe, is 1.5 miles
from the corner of Lawrence and Stevens Creek, which is in San Jose.

Can't you read? I have had them at least 10 times in the last 3 years
alone. Actually, the number is probably more than 20.

I wasn't asking exactly where you lived, but that I never heard anyone state
that they lived in Emerald Hill/Redwood City before. It would be like
someone stating that they lived in Ladera/Portala Valley. Each are distinct
communities.

If you had stated that you lived in Redwood City, or near Redwood City, or
in Emerald Hill, etc., I wouldn't replied to your post. I just thought it
was a bit of an odd way of stating where you lived.

Oh my, I bet that gets old, fast. Maybe a seafood shake might work, but
that sounds more repulsive than a chicken shake. Getting enough protein
is an issue. When my stepfather was ill, my mother made gumbo and she
put it through the blender. Sounds bad, but it tasted pretty good. I
try to eat 100 grams of protein per day, but I don't usually make it. I
had about 45 grams yesterday. It's easy to lose your appetite in the
summer when it's this hot.

Well, given its size (fewer than 4 000 people), very few people
outside of the immediate area know about Emerald Hills. I myself
didn't know until I started looking for a house in the area.

And as far as "distinct areas" go, you can address us at "Emerald
Hills, CA 94062" or at "Redwood City, CA 94062" - either way the Post
Office will deliver. I always write "Redwood City, CA 94062"

I think the post office prefers EMERALD HILLS, CA 94062.

If you go to their Zip Code finder web page:

http://zip4.usps.com/zip4/welcome.jsp

And enter your address, with Redwood City (instead of Emerald Hills) it will
change the city name back to Emerald Hills when it displays your address
with your zip code.

It's more like saying someone lives in Willow Glen/San Jose or Rose
Garden/San Jose. Emerald Hills is a neighborhood in RWC just like
Willow Glen and Rose Garden are neighborhoods in SJ.

Everyone I know who lives in Ladera DOES say it's part of Portola
Valley. (I know quite a few people who live in Ladera from my years as
a farrier shoeing horses, mostly on the peninsula from Los Gatos to
Woodside.)

Nothing in particular. I'm just a geography buff, that, and one of my first
jobs I had was working in a mail room where I developed a habit of being a
stickler in properly addressing letters and packages. (I'm someone who will
actually put the nine-digit zip codes on all the Christmas cards I mail out.)

County, like East Palo Alto was before it incorporated. It has its own
Postal Designation (Emerald Hills). Willow Glen and the Rose Garden are
actual neighborhoods inside San Jose's city limits, and don't have a unique
Postal Designation (try sending a letter addressed to Rose Garden, CA).

I guess we just know different people then. The several people I know that
live in Ladera never state that they live in Portola Valley. They always
say Ladera (and if the person they're talking to is unfamiliar with Ladera,
then they'll mention that it's next to Portola Valley).

say "San Francisco area" or "San Francisco Bay area", which is generally

My daughter lives in the unincorporated area a block or three away
from the Rose Garden area - maybe I'll try that experiment. I don't
see why it wouldn't work. I thought zip codes and street addresses
were the way a letter gets to and fro in these modern times. AFAIK
city names are unnecessary in this day and age.

lived a couple of years in the So. Bay. Until now, however, I had no
idea of Portola Valley's location. I'm not sure that I've ever heard
of it before. I just looked on the map. I'm guessing I passed it or
near it many times whilst zipping along Skyline Blvd over the years.

"Portola Valley" means that subset of the Portola neighborhood
that is not up on Portola Hill. And that's all it means.

If some dingbats down on the pennisula have also picked "Portola
Valley" to refer to some area or other down there, then they are
confused and need to fix this.

I've heard of Portola Valley, but I don't know if I've ever been on
Skyline that far South. I will put that drive on the to do list and
make it someday soon.

Portola Valley has been an incorporated town for nearly 50 years.
So it's nothing new. I don't know if the name had much currency
before that time, but it's the only entry for that name in wikipedia,
and probably the only location of this name giving google hits.
It does have a hill, but it's Windy Hill.

Don't mess with them: they have lots of rich people, as well as
the San Andreas Fault.

would bolster the case for a "Portola Valley" placename.

Assuming the town of "Portola Valley" is actually in the drainage

Yeah, I think we're on the same page, something like PORT-ah-lah. Of
course, Bernal is another one that distinguishes San Franciscans from
the rest of the BA. Oh, and the Italians who pronounce Spanish names
with Italian pronunciations. Often, they're the same, but there's
still old time Italian San Franciscans who will say Valencha St.

He's way in over his head. When he salutes the military
off his chopper, it's very questionable. Mister anti-America,

Sf has nothing constructive to add. He should evaluate his
life and then decide whether to route the car's exhaust
pipe into his front seat, or take the easier route by simply
looking up and pulling his trigger.

Either way, SF could be in a better place. You can see his
frustration with his life on the internet. Sad real-time display of
a mind gone bad, but we hear that he may save his
family from years of litigation if he just triggers the Life
